The 7th Regiment proudly represented New London once again in 2013. The corps continues to grow in size and this year took on a much more difficult musical score and marching routine – these members can play along side any corps in America. Often competing against larger corps, the 7th fall a bit short on the GE (general affect) categories, with the corps continual growth, we are looking forward to the new 2014 season where new milestones will be achieved. Editorial… With the newsletter editor position being “open”, this edition is a short version newsletter to capture the 2013 season scores and pay tribute to another past supporter of drum corps in the New London area. As it takes many dedicated volunteers to successfully run a drum and bugle corps, the SAA hopes to honor the memory of those that contributed to those successes of the former Surfers, Whalers, and Sword Excalibur corps from New London. One such supporter, James “Jim” Fritz was a dedicated supporter of these corps and proud supporter of the 7th Regiment as well. Retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer from the Coast Guard in 1966, Jim got involved with the Surfers as his two daughters Lizz and Barbara were members. Jim later went on to serve on the Board of Directors and volunteered in many capacities over the years. We thank Jim for his support and leadership roles, and his own family involvement which continues today through his daughters, and his grandson Tyler who marched in the early years of the 7th Regiment. The drum corps experience only exists by the work and effort of those who contribute, and Jim reached out and touched so many youth during his years of involvement – we are forever grateful to him.

The 7th Regiment competed in 14 competitions in June through August of 2013. The DCI Open Class Prelims and Final National Championships were held again at Michigan City, Indiana. As a 10th year corps, the 7th Regiment fell back a few spots to 7th in the Open Class Corps! Scores still remained in the mid 80’s – another great year!
