Attention all Catechists, High School & Middle School Core Leaders, and volunteers to the Homebound: The Archdiocese of Atlanta requires that every volunteer who work with or around children, youth, and/or vulnerable individuals should complete the Safe Environment requirements. This includes completing a Volunteer Applica-tion and attending a Virtus: Protecting God’s Children session. Virtus sessions are offered throughout the year and at various locations across the archdiocese. A ses-sion will be offered at St. Lawrence on Tuesday, June 26 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. To register for a session, go to http://www.virtus.org/virtus/. If you have questions, please contact Tarcy Hernandez at [email protected].

Today is the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (the Feast Day of the birth of John the Baptist). To say John the Baptist and Jesus were closely related and connected is an understatement. Both were foretold by prophets, especially Isaiah. The only record of the birth of John the Baptist appears in the Gospel of Luke and it is at the heart of our Gospel Reading today. A key player in this event is, of course, John the Baptist’s father Zechariah. Zechariah was a Jewish priest, but when the Archangel Gabriel revealed to him that he would father a child, Zechariah refused to believe it. As a result he was rendered speechless until John was born. Zechariah had total trust in the Lord, however. Although it was traditional at that time to name the first son after the father, he and Elizabeth had been told that they were to name him John. As reported in the Gospel, Elizabeth said “He will be called John.” The family protested at which time Zechariah wrote “His name is John.” When he did that, Zechariah could speak once more. He did not say “should be”; he said “is.” The trust shown by Zechariah is an example to us that we must trust in God, not just when it is convenient, but all the time. Those of advanced generations know who Lawrence Welk was. Born and raised Catholic, Welk practiced his faith throughout his life. He once said, “Never trust anyone completely but God. Love people, but put your full trust only in God.”

His name is John

Mass Intentions During his ministry, John was quizzed about how to be right with God. John tell them they do not have to quit their jobs with the Roman Empire but to do their jobs in a righteous manner. This is important for us today, to be good stewards we must use our gifts and talents every day in the workplace—fairly and without involvement in any immoral actions.

The Second Collection next week is for Peter’s Pence Collec-tion. In this second collection, we are supporting Pope Francis in his charitable works. The Peter’s Pence Collection is taken up worldwide to support our brothers and sisters on the mar-gins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and natu-ral disasters. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the collection is an opportunity to join with Pope Francis and be a witness of charity to our suffering brothers and sisters.

For we brought nothing into the world, just as we shall not be able to take anything out of it.- 1 Timothy 6:7 When planning our will, we first think of our family and those we leave behind. Next, please consider your parish and what it has meant to you. You can make a lasting difference in the future of your parish by remembering the parish endowment fund in your will. You can leave a percent of your estate, a dollar amount, or specific assets to the parish endowment fund. For additional information about estate planning, please contact Juliet Greco at the Catholic Foundation of North Geor-gia at 404.497.9440 or [email protected].
