A new year is upon us and with it a whole new in-take of apprentices and students start the PGAprogramme.

As an apprentice you need to play to a 5 handicapor better, work under a qualified PGA member, study a distance learning programme and passplaying and practical exams. Doing it this waymeans that you join the PGA and forfeit your am-ateur status.

Or you can join one of the PGA’s approved edu-cation providers and study the academic pro-gramme full time as an amateur and then shouldyou wish to join the PGA, you do practical timeas an apprentice.

The course includes subjects such as Golf Coach-ing, Business Finance and Retailing, Sports Science and Equipment Technology.

If you fit the bill and see yourself making a careerout of being a golf professional contact Andrew Gunn or Janine Muller at the PGA on011 485 1370.

Dear Editor

I want to know if I am the only one but I say letsstart a pressure group to ask those concerned withgolf to consider the following; Golf is a noun, nota verb. One plays golf -- one does not golf. Oneplays golf on a golf course, not a track. Runnersand race cars do what they do on a track. Andplease, scribes and commentators, it is LeopardCreek – not Leopard, Pinnacle Point – not Pinna-cle just like it is Pebble Beach -- not Pebble. WellI feel better now!!

On another note I would like to know if you thinkTiger Woods “is back”. As I write this, Mr. Woodshas just won the Chevron World Challenge and

the press seems to be going bananas! I am not sosure that this victory means that Tiger Woods willgo marching back to his number one in the worldposition. I feel that he still has a long way to go. Iam sure the press is hoping like mad that he is backas when he is playing well their ratings are so muchbetter.

Thank you for an entertaining magazine that Iread religiously.

Yours truly

Murray Jones

Dear Murray

You make a good point as this so often happens; my pet hate is when a cricketer says “he really steppedup to the plate”. To my knowledge stepping up to the plate applies to baseball! There are many instances

of this and I think that sportsmen should be made aware of this, so YES we will join your movement.Send me the forms!

Is Tiger back? Well, he went back to number 21 in the world but just how much does a win atthe Chevron really mean? This was an end of season event with a limited field; Woods on the

other hand was well rested and really keen to snatch a win which he did by one shot againstZach Johnson. Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Rory Mcllroy were not there.

Let’s see him win in Abu Dhabi at the end of January and then start counting our chickens!

Regards

Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinionsor articles of interest (max 500 words). If your letteris published you will win a fantastic PGA voucherworth R500 to be redeemed with any registeredPGA Pro, for equipment or golf lessons

Congratulations to Murray - you have won a PGAvoucher worth R500!

Ruan de Smidt finished first, but all 36 players

who received Sunshine Tour cards at the close of

Qualifying School last month felt like winners.

“I was hitting it well the whole week, and winning

Tour School is really something for me – it means

I can compete with the top guys,” said De Smidt.

Bloemfontein Golf Club hosted the 68-man finale

of a 90-hole endeavour, undertaken by 252 players

looking to make their mark in 2012, but only 36

went on to claim Tour cards.

De Smidt was a cool customer and carded 67 to

close the tournament at 16-under-par, four strokes

clear of runners-up Danie van Tonder and Wesley

Worster. On the final day De Smidt took the game

to his competitors, making an eagle at the 15th and

carding four birdies during his five-under-par final

round. “That eagle was really the moment of my

round. I hit driver and then eight-iron to 10 foot

and when I sank that putt it was amazing,” he said.

The front stretch was calm for the 22-year-old – he

made birdies at the first and fifth, slowly building

up his rhythm before turning at one-under for the

day. The last nine of 90 holes of golf would see the

Krugersdorp Golf Club professional close in style

– he penciled in no drops on the back stretch and

calmly pulled away from the field.

Kyle Scott, Chris Erasmus, Drikus van der Walt,Daniel Hammond, Graham van der Merwe, Fran-cois Coetzee, Thomas Lovett, Juan Langeveld andFrancois Haughton respectively made up the re-mainder of the top 10, all of whom took a cut ofthe R70,000 prize fund.

But prize money was not the objective – earning aTour card was – Riekus Nortje, Steve Surry, Andrevan Zyl, Jacque Etienne van Tonder, Gary Birch,Lean Boezaart, Beyers Smith, Johann Mostert,Willie Steyn, Brendan de Lange, Kevin Stinson,Wendell Bossenger, Pieter Moolman, Michael Hol-lick, Steven van Heerden, David Ryan, Greg Petzer,Aron Zemmer, Coenie Bester, Teboho Sefatsa,Francois van Vuuren, Nathan Waghorn, Jared Har-vey and Martin Du Toit all earned the right to com-pete next year by finishing within the top 30 andties. Amateur Jared Harvey managed to squeezeinto the 2012 Tour - he carded 69 on the final day, closed at level-par and snatched his card. “Thenerves and the confidence took a knock when I shot77 for round one, but I managed to finish birdie, birdie today and sneak in. I have my sights on progolf and my confidence would have been shatteredhad it not been my week,” he said.

For De Smidt it was a long road, but after a gruelingtrial he proved his mettle and will surely look forRookie of the Year glory in 2012.

Pace's total of 11 under par 277 with a closinground of 69 was enough for sole possession of sec-ond place, four strokes behind American teenager,Alexis Thompson, in the final event of the season.

Fellow South African Stacy Lee Bregman was a fur-ther two shots behind in a share of fourth on nineunder for the week.

It brings to an end another solid season for Pace asshe managed nine top 10s, and heading into theDubai event was sixth on the order of merit.

Speaking at the Gary Player Invitational in No-vember, Pace said she was satisfied with her con-sistent season despite not notching up any furtherwins to add to her five from last season.

"I'm hitting the ball better than last year. I'm hittingsix percent more greens and seven percent morefairways plus I've gained 10 metres on my drives,"said Pace. I've done everything I've wanted to dogolfing wise, the putts just haven't dropped enoughand literally sometimes one shot has been how closeI've been to winning."

With a number of close finishes Pace said the Opende Espana where she finished second was one eventshe would have liked to win the most.

"I should've won that one, but the greens were kindof funky, some were fast some were slow," she said.

"Unfortunately I three putted the last hole but Ishould've won it earlier in the day.

"But maybe just a bit of luck and things would bedifferent, but that's golf."

With her earnings at the final event, Pace mightmove inside the top five on the moneylist which was one of her goals heading towards the end of theseason.

"My goal for the moneylist is top five, a top ten ortop five in Dubai should get me a top five and thatgets me into the US Open next year."

Looking ahead to next year, Pace said she will con-tinue working at her game with little time off. "I'mworking quite hard, and also in the off season I'llbe working quite hard," Pace said.

"I'll probably only take about two weeks off overChristmas and spend some time with my family. The first Australian event [next year] is now a com-bined LPGA event which is I think is a $1,2 millionevent."

Lee-Anne Pace followed up her breakthrough order of merit winning season on the

Ladies European tour in 2010, with another impressive year with a second place finish

in the Dubai Ladies Masters at the Emirates Golf Club last month.

Stone posted a final round of 73 to finish theweek on three under par. Jared Harvey, the onlyother amateur to make the halfway cut, finishedat two over par with a final round of 77.

“This has capped a fantastic year for me,” said 18-year-old Stone. “I’ve won five times this year andplayed internationally. My grandfather and myparents walked with me during the final round. The support I’ve had this week has been unbeliev-able.”

Stone only finished writing his matric exams theday before the first round, leaving him little timeto prepare for the South African Open.

“I knew it was going to be difficult. I wrote mylast Afrikaans exam on the Wednesday morningbefore the tournament started and went straightto Serengeti in the afternoon to practice. And Ijust made up my mind to go out there and enjoyit this week.”

A tricky final round played in a stiff breeze andwith the Serengeti greens firming up also testedhis resolve.

“It was unbelievable out there today. The greenswere getting so firm with this wind. I knew todaywas going to be tough. But you don’t win titles likethis easy. I just took a couple of breaths and saidto myself, ‘You’ve got to get through this becauseyou can’t just give it to Jared. You’ve got to fightfor it’. But my 73 felt like a 65.”

Stone will be focusing on his golf for the next ninemonths before he takes up a golf scholarship at theUniversity of Texas.

“I wanted to get into that American system. Yousee players like Luke Donald, Matt Kuchar, RickieFowler – all of them came through that. It putthem at that extra level. I want that level of com-petitiveness where you are pushed to improve.”

Stone is also in no hurry to turn professional justyet.

“It depends on how it goes in the States. It depends on how I develop and improve whileat College.”

Pretoria amateur Brandon Stone ended a remarkable year by winning the Freddie Tait

trophy for finishing as the leading amateur in the South African Open at the Serengeti

Golf and Wildlife Estate last month.

Whilst in Komatipoort for two weeks we stayed at Komati River Chalets. Nestled on the confluence of

the Komati and Crocodile Rivers, this resort combines comfortable accommodation with wild landscapes.

Chalets are set on the floodplain, less than 50 meters from the water’s edge. The riverfront is beautifully

kept and guests are able to enjoy relaxing walks along the river and through the riverbank forests.

I can highly recommend staying here; particularly if you are going to do some Tiger fishing as you can

stroll down to the river from your bungalow and throw a line in. They also have access to some other

good spots. Also found in the river are various Tilapia species, the Sharp tooth catfish, Carp, Yellow fish

and Mudfish.

Accommodation at Komati River Chalets features private entrances with seating areas and kitchens. Each

unit is air conditioned, includes en suite bathrooms and opens out onto patios among tropical gardens.

Komatipoort golf course is unique in every way. First in how it came to be?? A group of ded-icated farmers came together as a community and begun clearing the site in 1997. Coursedesigner Douw van der Merwe added his expertise to the layout and slowly this beautifulcourse set at the confluence of the Komati and Crocodile Rivers took shape. It was literally

a case of your bull dozer today, my tractor tomorrow; anyone got cement, sand or perhaps you can lenda hand on the weekend? You can understand how and why this course is a success with such a greatcommunity effort with pride and love for the game of golf. It didn’t happen overnight and the grass wasplanted in 2001, shortly thereafter the course opened for play.

The Golf course "Kambaku" named after the great tusker from the adjacent Kruger National Park. Theword KAMBAKU translated from Shangaan means "Exceptionally Big Elephant Bull". Kambaku wasone of the magnificent seven great tuskers of the Kruger National Park. He was an imposing animalfully deserving of the title bestowed upon him. The length, the curve and the weight of his ivory wereimpressive. His left tusk 259,5cm, weighing 63 kg his right tusk 265cm weighing 64kg. Kambaku hadunique features and his tusks where almost identical, he had no "paint –brush" on the tip of his tail, hehad three horizontal creases or folds at the base of his trunk and a perfectly round hole in his left ear. These features made Kambaku recognisable from a distance. During the dry season Kambaku spentmost of his time along the banks of the Crocodile River which today forms part of the Kambaku golfcourse border.

With its dramatic river frontage Kambaku golf course is the ideal golfing destination. To all those avidgolfers and non-golfers alike, you must play Kambaku. Elephant, buffalo and hippopotamus are oftenseen in the river during the course of play. If you keen on birds bring the binoculars with, birdlife isprolific and the resident woodlands kingfisher, fish eagle, white fronted bee-eaters to mention a fewmake bird watching wonderful.

The Kruger National Park is about the samesize as Israel, a little smaller than Belgiumand about a third of the size of Ireland. Thepark is approximately 360 kilometers long, has an average width of 65 kilometers and, atits widest point, it is 90 kilometers from eastto west.

The Kruger National Park is home to 336tree, 49 fish, 34 amphibian, 114 reptile,507 bird and 147 mammal species.Kruger National Park is said to hold over48 tons of ivory in storage and there aresome 12 000 elephants in the park.

Page 26: SA Golf Trader

Many South Africans (and atChristmas and Easter it is many, many) think of Komatipoort aslittle more than a gateway toMozambique. However, it of-

fers much more than transit to sun, sand, surf andseafood.

An historic railway settlement since the 1890’s, thetown is called after the Komati River: a siSwatiname that with great economy of words indicatesriver of cows or hippopotami. Nestled in the cornerwhere the Komati and Crocodile rivers meet isKambaku Golf Club. Tuskers and lesser Lowveldfauna can frequently be admired whilst playing atKambaku, as the Crocodile River, the course’snortherly boundary, is the southern border of theKruger National Park. The clubhouse, bar andrestaurant, overlooking the river, is excellent for anhour or three’s liquid assisted contemplation ofwhat would constitute a decent handicap for anellie… Should you wish to ask one, an 8km hopout of town takes you to the park’s CrocodileBridge Gate. The recently raised bridge is openthrough all weathers and accesses officially the bestgame viewing in the KNP.

A short drive to the south of Komatipoort is the Mananga border with Swaziland. Too often ignoredby South Africans as a potential holiday spot, the mountainous kingdom is well on the agenda. It makesKomatipoort a town where three countries and a great national park meet. Near Mananga border isthe eerily moving memorial to Samora Machel, whose aeroplane crashed there in 1986. An affectingsite, the memorial and visitors’ centre essentially proclaim that past differences between nations can bereconciled.

Given the vacation and trade possibilities of its location, there is little surprise that this little Lowveldtown is blessed with numerous fine guest houses and some decent eateries. Local cuisine follows a clearPortuguese influence with prawns a speciality. Whilst the centre of town won’t win beauty competitionsmost visitor accommodation is nestled amongst the pleasing, tree-lined backstreets or with views overthe Crocodile or Komati rivers. The latter river is justly famous for the fighting qualities of its tigerfish. Given notice, most local lodges can organise a day out with rod and reel and lend a credulous earto tales of monsters caught and released.

Apart from game viewing, golf, access to Mozambican beaches and Swazi mountains, tiger fishing andPortuguese cuisine, other local attractions include micro-light flights along the Crocodile River, bookablefrom the local airfield and elephant back safaris from a local game lodge. Four and a half hours fromthe bustle of Gauteng, Komatipoort is not just a different World, but many worlds in one.

TIGERFISHTigerfish can be considered Africa's equivalent ofthe South American piranha, though they belongto a completely different family, as they are famousfor their ferocity when hunting. They have razor-sharp teeth that are interlocking, along withstreamlined, muscular bodies built for speed.Tigerfish are aggressive predators. A tigerfish hasa gas-filled sac in its body that it uses as a soundreceiver. This transmits vibrations from thewater, enabling it to detect any animals nearbyand respond accordingly. A school of juvenilescan tackle animals of almost any size, includingany land animals that stray too close to thewater's edge. Adults tend to travel in smallergroups of four or five, but they are no less dan-gerous. Even an individual can take down preyas large as itself. When food is scarce or thecompetition for food is too great, tigerfish mayresort to cannibalism. This is particularly com-mon in the dry season. Tigerfish have also beenknown to attack humans, these attacks can bedevastating owing to their sharp teeth and ag-gressive hunting tactics.

Malelane Golf Course is a nine-hole golfcourse that is located close to the MalelaneGate entry to the Kruger National Park and of-fers double tees on each hole. The golf courseis normally in outstanding condition through-out the year.

The course is literally a chip & a putt from theKruger National Park and has a variety of beau-tiful indigenous trees. A water stream winds itsway through the course and there is a wide varietyof bird life to be seen. Vervet monkeys are a com-mon sight; always busy foraging at the fruits andflowers.

It is an easy walking course but it does get hot inthis region during summer, so take plenty of re-freshments with you when you play. While not achampionship golf course, it is a fun holiday ex-perience to play Malelane and a welcome breakfrom the Game Viewing.

The world renowned and South Africa’s numberone golf course Leopard Creek which hosts theAlfred Dunhill Championship is across the road.

SPECIAL FEATURE – CELEBRITY GOLFER PROFILE

www.sagolftrader.co.za January/February 201232

Where were you born and which schools didyou attend? I was born in Durban on the 19th ofDecember, 1987. I attended Riverview and Up-lands Prep and I went to high school at Michael-house in the KZN Midlands.

Did you play for SA schools? No, I didn't playfor SA schools.

Who did you first play provincial rugby for? Ifirst played provincial rugby for Natal U16 Cravenweek, where I was captain.

What made you move to Gauteng? The move tothe Lions was a hard decision to make. I hadmoved up the ranks in the Sharks system andplayed 19 games for them in Currie cups 2009,2010 when we won the Currie cup. The Sharkshad bought in and already had quality loose for-wards in the senior structure and I found myselfnot getting as much game time as I would haveliked. My move was purely based on what wouldbe better for my career.

In your opinion what was the magic that en-abled the Lions to win the Currie Cup againafter such a barren patch? I think we really grewas a team throughout the Super Rugby campaignand endured some tough times which made us astronger group. We also really put in the hours onthe field with the coaches and conditioning staff, which resulted in us being a really fit side. Thisshowed in a number of games where we beat teamsin the last quarter of the match and allowed us toplay a wide, running game.

Just how hard did the boys party after the win?We had a good celebration after the final, and itwas good to spend it with the team and family.Let's just say the boys looked a little tired on Mon-day when we met up again. Sunday fun day!!!!

Who were your most difficult opponents thisseason? There is no such thing as an easy game inthe modern day competition, but if I had to pick

one it would probably be our super 14 gameagainst the Highlanders.

How are the guys feeling about the Super 15?We have grown a lot as a team, with our win inthe Currie cup giving us belief and confidence totake into next years Super 15. It is the world’stoughest competition and will never be easy, butwe are looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Who do you rate as the best flanker that thegame has ever seen? There are so many amazingflankers in the world that have had a different in-fluence on the game. I personally feel that JuanSmith is the best blind sider in the modern gameeven though he has had a few injuries in the pastfew seasons. Richie Macaw and David Pocock arealso exceptional players that I look up to.

In three words what would you say about theSpringboks loss to Australia in the RWC quar-

terfinals? I was absolutely shocked at the ref inthat game!!! I was furious because we were and areso much better than the Aussies, but what can youdo when you have to play against the ref as well as15 other men. David Pocock got away with mur-der and if he had been dealt with the way thatCraig Joubert dealt with him in the semi-final, SAwould have gone through to the final.

I believe that you are into vintage cars, whichones in particular? I am mostly into 1960s Amer-ican muscle cars but also love old e- type Jags andAston Martins. Cars seemed to be a lot more emo-tional back then when the only goal was to lookamazing. I can't wait to get my 65 fastback Mus-tang in a few months time.

Where do you like to go to relax and get awayfrom it all? I love to go back to our farm outsideNelspruit where my folks live. It is one of the mostbeautiful and relaxing places to be. I like to do alittle shooting, ride my motor bikes and have around of golf at Leopard Creek.

What are your goals for the coming years? Mygoals for 2012 are for the Lions to be a real threatin the Super Rugby competition and personally toput my hand up by playing great rugby every timeI step onto the field. I would just like to add valueto my team’s efforts in becoming successful. Ifthrough all this I could gain selection for theBokke, it would be a dream come true!!!

GETTING ON TO GOLF

When did you start to play golf? I didn't startplaying golf from a particularly early age, whichyou would guess from my handicap. I only startedto play frequently after high school in Durban, when we had time off from rugby.

What is you current handicap? Ha ha ha!! Mycurrent handicap is probably a 20, but to be hon-est I don't play enough to improve my game at anyreasonable pace. I'm more of a social golfer!!

Where do you play out of? I’m currently a mem-ber at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington, RandPark Country Club and Johannesburg CountryClub. I mostly play out of Royal though.

Which is your favourite golf course? My favoritecourse is Leopard Creek where I fortunately get to

play quite frequently as our farm is 5min away. It'sa very beautiful course with some amazing holes.

Your preferred club is? Royal Johannesburg andKensington.

Do you walk or take a cart? It sounds a little lazybut I always take a cart. We only get to play on ourdays off from training and our legs are normallypretty tired after the weeks work. It also helps tospeed our game up when you hitting as many shotsas I am ha ha!!

Your favourite golfer is? I enjoy watching RoryMcElroy, Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer. All very young, exciting players.

Have you ever had a hole-in-one? No, I havenever hit a hole in one before, but I did hit a holein three at Beachwood in Durban. First tee shot, short into the water then second one bounce andinto the hole. Best par I ever made, and I cele-brated like it was a hole in one.

Do many of the Lions players play golf? We dohave a good number of golfers at the Lions butonly a hand full of whom can really play compet-itively. Won't mention any names....

Your ideal fourball would be? My ideal fourballwould be Ernie Els, actor Russell Brand andMiguel Angel Jimenez. Think that would be an in-teresting round of golf and a very interesting 19thhole!!!

What inspired you to start your golf course de-sign business?

Just after I’d won my second US Open in 1997 atCongressional the developers of Whiskey Creek inMaryland approached me to co-design its coursein partnership with architect J. Michael Poellet. From that moment onwards, I knew I wanted todesign more golf courses.

Initially I joined forces with the Jack Nicklaus De-sign Group. It was a good move from a profes-sional standpoint and I was grateful for theopportunity. Our business quickly blossomed, though, and we evolved from that initial joint ven-ture into a standalone, full service design company.I’ve got a great team of people and I’m very proudof what we’ve been able to achieve in a relativelyshort period of time. I think most professionalgolfers love the idea of being able to design greatgolf courses. For me, it’s not just a business. It’s be-come a passion.

Ernie Els Design has a history of designing greatcourses on islands – e.g. Hawaii, Mauritius, TheBahamas. Has this become a ‘signature’ for thebusiness?

That’s true; we’ve been fortunate to create golfcourses in some wonderful locations. As a designerit’s obviously exciting to be able to make the mostof what the landscape offers you and incorporatethose features into your design. But no, it’s cer-tainly not a signature for the business. We justhave plenty of experience now with the challengesand nuances of building on islands!

One of the Middle East’s iconic developments isthe Els Club in Dubai that opened in 2008. Whatwere the key design and construction challengesthat you had to overcome to bring this project tofruition?

I made at least six or seven site visits during theconstruction phase of the Els Club Dubai and fun-

nily enough, one of the main advantages also rep-resents one of the biggest challenges. Sand is easyto move around and for that reason it’s easy to‘shape’ the golf course. Trouble is, this is the desertand you can put the sand in a place one day…andovernight the wind shifts it to another place! You’rebasically fighting against Mother Nature.

So we tried to embrace the uniqueness of this en-vironment and incorporate the natural dunes andnative plant material into our design, as opposedto creating an artificial feeling oasis in the middleof the desert. I guess you could say we got MotherNature on board and worked with her, not againsther. And actually it helped give the golf course oneof its unique qualities, one of its strengths I think. There is a genuine sense that you are playing golfin the desert.

The remodeling of the West course at Went-worth received some criticism when it was un-veiled for competitive play at last year’s BMWPGA Championship. Why do you think thiswas?

Well, let me start by saying how much I love thatgolf course. It’s one of my favourites and I have alot of fond memories from the tournaments I’veplayed there, so being given the chance to bring itinto the 21st century was a real privilege and inmany ways a labour of love. But it hasn’t beenstraightforward and, as you say, not everyone im-mediately embraced the changes that we made.

I was disappointed by some of the comments fromplayers, but the fact is the greens were old and ex-tremely inefficient in terms of drainage, whichcaused problems with surface quality and consis-tency, and many of the original Harry Colt shotvalues had been lost due to the advances in golfequipment technology. The Club’s owner RichardCaring provided an opportunity to address bothof those issues and you have to give him a lot ofcredit for that.

We feel we’ve done a great job renovating andmodernizing this Harry Colt classic. It has takena couple of bites at the cherry to get some aspectsof it, such as the 18th green, just as we would wantit. But there’s no question in my mind this is a bet-ter, more challenging golf course now. It’s atougher test for the game’s best players, as it shouldbe, and it is also a great members’ course.

You now have many associated companies thatsit alongside the golf course design business.Do you actively try and marry these into newprojects and are there examples where this hasbeen a success?

Many of our business activities have grown natu-rally over the last decade and I think one of ourstrengths now is that we’re able to create oppor-tunities that help bring more value to our clients. For example, in the golf design business it becameclear that developers were looking to us for morethan just golf course design services. We now havestrong and dynamic offering with the Els Clubconcept, the Els Performance Academy, Els Resi-dence programs and Big Easy Restaurant. Extend-ing our involvement across various areas in thedevelopment has been very well received and Igive a lot of credit to my team. I feel fortunate tohave on board some of the best talent in the busi-ness.

Of course, Ernie Els Wines is making a huge markright now internationally and we’ve expanded theportfolio to include both award winning whiteand reds. And it goes without saying that ourFoundation work both in South Africa and Els forAutism is something that means a lot to my familyand team.

Of the 11 courses now open for play around theworld, is there one you are particularly proudof, and for what reasons?

You’d expect me to say every one of our golfcourses is special in its own way and that’s gen-uinely how I feel. But I guess I’ll always have aparticular soft spot for Oubaai, which was our firstever design project in South Africa. We’re soproud of that golf course. And Els Club Copper-leaf, too. That golf course was built on a piece ofland where my grandfather lived, so that makes itextra special for the whole of our family.

What are your key projects currently inprogress around the world?

It’s a good time for Ernie Els Design. In the past12 months we had the official opening of Albanyin the Bahamas, which is a beautiful golf course

in a stunning exclusive private community, backedby the Tavistock Group. We currently have 54holes under construction in Malaysia, which is anexciting deal for us.

Greg and I have also just completed our first sitevisits and finalized the hole routings on a new golfcourse in Namibia called Desert Star.

This is very interesting and actually a totallyunique concept, because the company is establish-ing resorts that not only combine sport, golf andluxury living but also incorporate spectacular on-site film sets to support the Namibian motion pic-ture industry. It’s an exciting project to be a partof.

As I say, business is going well and the way thingsare shaping up it looks like a very healthy situationfor us in the next five, 10 years and beyond.

How active are you in the design process? Doyou have a particular ethos or design style?

Right from the start we’ve tried to manage thegrowth of Ernie Els Design in such a way that al-lows me to be very much hands-on with all of theprojects – by that, I mean have personal input inevery stage of the design and planning process andthen make regular site visits. It’s the way I alwayslike to do business and I think it’s absolutely theright way to do this business.

I think my career as a player and the experiencesI’ve gained playing great golf courses all over theworld contribute to my vision as a golf course de-signer. At the end of the day every golf course thatwe create is special and unique. It’s not just a caseof creating a design template and applying it todifferent locations. And you have to be able to seethe bigger picture. In my view you shouldn’t de-sign a golf course for just one type of player. Partof the art of good design is making a courseplayable for all types of golfer and there are waysyou can do that, such as the positioning of the teecomplexes, the width of the fairways, and so on.

Where are the current growth opportunities?

Obviously a lot of people are looking towards Asiaand China in particular. We also feel this is a

strong market but are seeing a lot of enquires fromSouthern American and some emerging Caribbeancountries. It’s an exciting time of opportunities inthat sense. As I said before, we have a number ofnew projects in the pipeline and I expect we’ll beable to make announcements soon.

What are the main influencing factors helpingor inhibiting the growth in this sector of themarket?

Globally it’s obviously been a challenging two orthree years, but the same rules still apply. As withanything in life, in order to be successful you needto have a product that is demanded by the buyer. Some of the older models of golf development areno longer viable.

At Ernie Els Design we are finding that every mar-ket is different as the cultures are different andthey are at different stages in golf development. Can a new golf course still be economically prac-tical? Of course, but you need to cut your clothaccordingly.

You are heavily involved in charity work, espe-cially the Els for Autism Foundation. What isthe main focus for the charity at present?

Our primary focus is a $30 million capital cam-paign to help create a new Els Center of Excellencein Florida. Thanks to various events, including theEls for Autism Golf Challenge and the Els forAutism Pro Am, we’re well on our way to achiev-ing our financial targets.

The Center will be the first of its kind in theworld, offering professional and medical resources, and therapy and education for children from theentire autism spectrum to help them lead full adultlives. It will also have a global reach via a digitallearning platform.

It’s very exciting to think what this Center mightbe able to achieve. In fact as you are reading thiswe will have hosted over 500 people at our GrandFinale in Las Vegas capping what has been atremendous year for our foundation.

It hasn’t been a good year for Branden Grace – until now, as the 23-year-old Sunshine Tour youngster led four other South Africans totheir European Tour cards in the European Tour’s Final QualifyingStage at PGA Catalunya Resort in Spain.

Grace carded a final-round 73 in a gruelling six-round event to finish 11that 14-under-par, seven strokes off the pace set by winner David Dixon.

The other South Africans to earn the right to play on one of the biggeststages in world golf – players from the European Tour are dominating thegame right now – were Warren Abery, Darren Fichardt, Alex Haindl andTjaart van der Walt.

Abery turned a second-successive year of success on the Sunshine Tourinto the kind of play which earned him his card: He had seven top-10s in

2011, including victory in the Nedbank Affinity Cup in a great second half of the year.

Fichardt was even more successful than Abery on the 2011 Sunshine Tour, with 12 top 10, including victories in the Vodacom Origins of Golf event at the Wild Coast and in the Suncoast Classic. Haindl andVan der Walt both campaigned fairly extensively abroad in 2011 – Haindl on the Challenge Tour and Van der Walt in Asia – but Haindl did find time to post six top-10s in South Africa, while Van der Walt had four.

SPECIAL FEATURE – GHOLFBANE: GROEN OASIS OF GROEN WOESTYN

’n verantwoordelikheid

OK, so they don’t actually say that, but one thing’sfor sure: Dias had great taste when it came to lo-cation - as you’ll see when you play at Mossel Bayand Pinnacle Point.

“These are two of South Africa’s most spectacularlyscenic championship courses, and they’ll be team-ing up to offer an exciting weekend of golf duringthe 2012 Dias Festival,” said Festival Organiser,Bertu Nel.

He said that the Festival is the town’s celebrationof the arrival of Dias (who was the first Europeanto round the Cape, and the first to land on SouthAfrican soil) - and of the many cultures that makeSouth Africa the country it is today.

The Dias Festival will run from the 3rd to the 5thof February, 2012.

“Golf will be just one of the attractions on offer -because the entire community is getting behindthe Festival,” said Mr. Nel.

“There’ll be something for every member of thefamily - from downhill skateboarding to fishing, sky diving, trail running, touch rugby, an urbanassault challenge for mountain bikers, a naval gunrun, and squash and sailing competitions. There’llbe an air show, a street parade featuring vintagecars and tractors, a number of displays by the po-lice and the NSRI, concerts (including a Mossel

Bay’s Got Talent show), and a doggie walk - but

most of all, there’ll be golf.”

He said that Golf In The Garden Route will be of-

fering a limited number of Festival packages which

will include 18 holes at Pinnacle Point on the 4th

of February, and 18 holes at Mossel Bay on the 5th

- as well as golf cart hire on both days, and an ex-

citing prize-giving ceremony - for just R 799.00

per person.

Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm said that the

Festival programme - and special offers on accom-

modation during the Festival - have been uploaded

to www.visitmosselbay.co.za/festivals, and that up-

dates are also posted to the town’s Facebook page

“Mossel Bay is the Garden Route’s Do Stuff desti-

nation because there really is that much to do here

- and although we have great weather throughout

the year, February is definitely one of our best

months.

“It’ll be worth bringing the family for a few extra

days by the sea,” she said.

They say the real reason Bartolomeu Dias landed in Mossel Bay on the 3rd of

February, 1488, was to buy a new stock of golf balls - he’d been practicing aboard

for months and hit his last one into the sea somewhere near Walvis Bay.

“I think people are taking notice of what I’vedone and how I’ve done it, and maybe peoplewill change the way they approach practice.”

Donald prides himself on his work ethic, but alsobelieves he has a great team around him in coachPat Goss, who has been there since The Ryder Cupstar’s University days in Chicago, sports psycholo-gist Dave Alred – the man who helped JonnyWilkinson become a World Cup winner – and cad-die John McLaren.

From tournament prize money this year, he hasbanked a total of € 7,359,552, and he has alsoearned a €1,499,710 bonus for finishing third inthe FedEx Cup in America and a € 1,107,174bonus for winning The Race to Dubai. His total of€ 9,966,436, is more than Tiger Woods has man-aged in any year, including in 2006 when he won11 times.

Donald finished a cumulative 116 under par on theUS PGA Tour and 90 under par on The EuropeanTour – and that does not include the two matchplay events, one of which he won and the other inwhich he was runner-up.

He won The Race to Dubai despite playing sixfewer events than runner-up Rory McIlroy, and hetopped the American Money List despite playingseven fewer than runner-up Webb Simpson. It trulywas an amazing double.

In 2012, Donald wants to give himself the best pos-sible chance going into all four majors. First up isthe Masters Tournament at Augusta, where he wasfourth this year and third on his debut in 2005.

If he can maintain his current levels of performance,it would be no surprise if Donald were to receivethe Green Jacket from fellow European Tour cham-pion Charl Schwartzel this April.

The final event of the European Tour season waswon by the man who has been the Tour’s biggesthitter for four of the last five years. But it is Eng-land’s Luke Donald, with a driving average of282 yards which leaves him ranked 145th andsome 30 yards behind Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, whose year has been the stuff of dreams.

World Number One, leading money winner on theUS PGA Tour and now The Race to Dubai cham-pion as well, Donald has shown that brute force isnot a pre-requisite for golfing success.

Accuracy and a brilliant short game have still tobring the 34 year old a Major title, and that in-evitably is the top target for 2012. But they havegiven him four victories, a stunning 20 top ten fin-ishes in his last 25 events, and an incredible € 9,966,436 in prize money.

AMATEUR NEWS

www.sagolftrader.co.za January/February 201266

St Andrews, Scotland: Amateur golfers will beallowed to play for unlimited hole-in-oneprizes under revisions to the Rules of Amateur

Status announced last month by The R&A.

Until now, prizes for holing a tee shot in amateurgolf have been subject to the same restrictions asother competitions, including longest drive andnearest the hole. However, a Rule change which ac-knowledges the special nature of a hole-in-one dur-ing a round of golf means that restrictions on theprizes offered have been lifted.

The new Rules of Amateur Status, supported byRolex, also include changes for elite amateur golfersaimed at easing the difficult transition from ama-teur to professional golfer. It follows a far-reachingfour-year review of amateurism in golf, which evenquestioned the need for a set of rules, and has re-sulted in the first-ever uniform, worldwide code forAmateur Status.

Announcing the changes effective from 1 January2012, The R&A's Director of Rules and EquipmentStandards, David Rickman said: “We felt the timewas right to carry out a fundamental review of theRules of Amateur Status. We were conscious thatmany sports had done away with amateur statusrules and we felt that was an appropriate questionfor us to ask.

“We concluded that it is very important that golfretains its amateur regulations, mainly because ofthe self-regulating nature of the game, both in termsof the playing rules and handicapping. We felt thatuncontrolled financial incentives could place toomuch pressure on these important features.”

A new ruling (Rule 3-2b) excludes hole-in-oneprizes from the general prize limit and allows high

value prizes, including cash, to be awarded. This ex-ception, which brings The R&A into line with theUnited States Golf Association (USGA) Rules ofAmateur Status, is specific to prizes for holes-in-oneachieved while playing a round of golf and neitherseparate events nor multiple-entry events qualify.

Suzann Pettersen, Major winner and R&A - Work-ing for Golf Ambassador, said: “I think this is a re-ally good change. Anyone who makes a hole-in-oneknows there is a degree of luck.

“Most professional tournaments offer hole-in-oneprizes and it adds some real interest for players andfans. It is great to think that club golfers can nowexperience that same excitement.”

Those who will notice the biggest changes to therules are elite amateurs preparing to make the diffi-cult transition to the professional game.

Players will now be able to enter into an agreementwith an agent or sponsor as long as they do not re-ceive any financial gain while still an amateur. Ruleshave also been relaxed on subsistence payments paidthrough national golf unions.

Rickman explained: “The rules on contracts now re-flect the modern game and adopt a much more re-alistic and common sense approach.

“Similarly, the rules on subsistence expenses shouldhelp the support of deserving talent wherever it mayemerge across the golfing world.”

Tom Lewis, who recently turned professional afteran amateur career that included winning the SilverMedal at this year’s Open Championship as well asbeing part of the victorious 2011 Walker Cup team, welcomed the changes. He said: “It is an importantchange because some players are forced into turningpro early just because of financial difficulties.

Significant changes include allowing unlimited hole-in-one prizes

“It will make a real difference as they will now beable to turn professional for all the right reasons andalso at the right time for them. It is probably themost important decision they will make in their ca-reer. “All the experience I gained as amateur hashelped prepare me for life as a professional and I ampleased that I made the decision to play in theWalker Cup before joining the professional ranks.”

The R&A and USGA have historically had differentRules of Amateur Status and while the differenceshave reduced over the years, until now there hadbeen two separate codes. As part of the fundamentalreview, the two governing bodies have developed amodern flexible code that meets the differing de-mands of golfers across the globe, thereby enablinga single joint code to be established.

Western Province took control of the SouthAfrican Junior Inter-Provincial on day two andremained in ascendancy throughout the next tworounds. Little surprise then that the Cape sideclaimed the country’s premier junior team com-petition with two more magnificent victories atLeopard Park Golf Club last month.

Leading by just one point, there was at least amathematical chance that second-placed GautengNorth could force a draw with Province if theywon both their matches and the Cape side fal-tered. But while the Northerns team hoped thateither Border or Boland would present a potentialspeed hump, the Western Province players savedtheir best for last. The eight-man side sparked tolife in the home stretch of their title hunt, castingboth opponents side with another imperious per-formance. Province came out firing against Border, losing one match and halving another to blast toa 10-5 - 1.5 victory. While their match againstBoland went down the wire, the Province playersunderlined their tenacity in a closely fought con-test to wrap up a 6.5 - 5.5 victory and claim thespoils. They finished two points clear of GautengNorth, on 20 points overall.

“It’s an incredible moment for the whole squad,”said an elated manager Peter Little.

“We worked exceptionally hard for this win, rightdown to the last game in the last match. We nevertook anything for granted. Like I’ve said all week,we are a team that bats from one to eight; thereare no superstars, the whole team contributed andthat’s why we pulled it through.”

Northerns brushed Southern Cape aside for a 7.5- 4.5 win but a very spirited Ekurhuleni sideforced them to a 6-all draw and limited their final

tally to 18 points. Meanwhile Central Gautengbeat KwaZulu-Natal 7 - 5 and Limpopo 8 – 4 totie Northerns for second place, but Central wasforced to third after losing on the games count bya slender 3.5.

Since junior golf now also falls under the auspicesof the South African Golf Association, this yearmarked the last time that all the teams competedat equal footing.

Next year’s Junior IPT will be played to the sameformat as the SA IPT, Mid-Amateur IPT and Sen-ior IPT, with six teams in the A-Division andseven in the B-Division.

Changes in the Rules – which for the first timehave been designed, published and presentedjointly by golf ’s governing bodies – include ex-onerating a player from penalty if it is knowntheir ball was moved by the wind after address.

Following an exhaustive, four-year review of golf ’s34 playing Rules, nine principal Rules have beenamended to improve clarity and ensure penaltiesare proportionate. Significant changes include:

Ball Moving After Address (Rule 18-2b). A newexception is added which exonerates the playerfrom penalty if their ball moves after it has beenaddressed when it is known or virtually certainthat they did not cause the ball to move. For ex-ample, if it is a gust of wind that moves the ballafter it has been addressed, there is no penalty andthe ball is played from its new position.

Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions (Rule 13-4).Exception 2 to this Rule is amended to permit aplayer to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at anytime, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for thecourse and Rule 13-2 (improving lie, area of in-tended stance or swing or line of play) is notbreached.

Time of Starting (Rule 6-3a). The rule isamended to provide that the penalty for startinglate, but within five minutes of the starting time,

is reduced from disqualification to loss of the firsthole in match play or two strokes at the first hole in stroke play. Previously this penalty reduc-tion could be introduced as a condition of competition.

Commenting on the revisions to the Rules of Golfsupported by Rolex, The R&A's Director of Rulesand Equipment Standards David Rickman said:“The key point is that the Rules of Golf will re-main fundamentally the same. We have undergonea pretty extensive review although what has comeout of that has been relatively modest.

“The Rules of Golf are constantly evolving andour hope is that what we have produced for 2012is clear, informed by common sense and reflectiveof the demands of the modern game.”

USGA Senior Director of Rules of Golf ThomasPagel said: “We have produced a unified code ofthe Rules of Golf for 60 years and although thecontext has been the same, we often found theperception that there were different Rules in placedepending upon where you were to play the game.

“Now the book will not only have the same con-tent, but it will also be presented in a uniformfashion with similar formatting and covers; thiswill truly be a single code governing the Rules ofthe game that reflects the strong collaboration be-tween The R&A and USGA.”

Start by addressing the ball as per normal(for a pitch of about 20 metres).

Then move your right foot back (for righthanded golfers) so that your right toe is inline with your left heel. Lift your right heeloff the ground.

Moving my foot into this position helps with the following:

1. It forces my weight onto my left foot (opposite for lefties)

2. It allows me to rotate through the chip and not “SCOOP”the shot

3. It forces me to finish with my weight on my left side.

In this picture you can see that a scoop leavesmy weight on my right side and leads to thinand fat chips.

With the arrival of the December holiday thereis ample time to do some practicing! Thesepracticing tips will definitely help you whenyou go and play you with your dad so that youcan take his cash!

Practicing long game and pitching at home isdifficult due to the length of the shots. But thisdoesn’t mean you can’t practice. Add some prac-tice balls and hoops to your Christmas wish listto help you improving your game.

So, how do we do this?

Practicing Tips

Arrange the hoops approximately 4-5m inwidth; the number of hoops will determinethe length of your fairway. With theknowledge that you already have about thefull swing, make sure not just to hit theball far but also straight, keeping it be-tween the hoops! Place a marker whereyour ball lands to see how your distanceimproves.

www.sagolftrader.co.za January/February 201282

Page 85: SA Golf Trader

KIDS STUFF

Chipping practicing mustalways be fun! When you areat the golf course, head overto the chipping area - placeyour hoop on long tees sothat it is elevated from theground. Put another hooparound a specific hole. Theidea is to pitch the ball inthe elevated hoop and thenit must roll the distance tothe hoop that is around thehole. This will give you agood idea of how the ballwill react if you hit a high orlow chip shot.

As you know by now putting is extremely important. Sometimes it is difficult to judge the speedof putt. Once again, place a hoop on long tees so that a golf ball can pass through underneaththe hoop. To practice both uphill and downhill putts, place the hoop on a slope that will giveyou an opportunity to putt from both sides of the slope.

Use 5 balls, starting +- 5m away from the hole. To be successful, the ball must finish inside theelevated hoop. See how many out of 5 balls you can do successfully, and then move furtheraway. This can also be done with a putt that breaks from right-to-left or left-to-right!

Have fun practicing and playing!

António Pina, President of the Algarve Tourism Board, said: “It is with considerable pride that Portugal, and more specifically The Algarve, will once again host the prestigious International Golf Travel Market.

“With exceptional facilities and an enviable year-round climate, IGTM 2012 provides The Algarve witha significant opportunity to promote the region as a first-class golf destination,” he added.

Purpose-built for tourism in the 1970s, The Algarve has developed into a cosmopolitan destination, everyyear attracting nearly six million visitors who come to play the region’s 35 golf courses designed by someof the game’s greats, including Sir Henry Cotton, Arnold Palmer, Sir Nick Faldo and the late Seve Balles-teros.

Peter Grimster, Exhibition Manager of IGTM, said: “Portugal has been at the heart of the golf travel busi-ness for three decades and it has established itself as one of Europe’s finest destinations.

“The quality of golf courses and resorts in Vilamoura is outstanding, and combined with an excellent con-ference facility at The Tivoli Marina Hotel, we have all the necessary logistics to stage a truly fantasticevent. We look forward to welcoming everyone to IGTM 2012.”

International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) has announced that The Algarve region of Portugal is to host the 15th edition of the world’s premier global event for golf tourism

suppliers, buyers and media, from November 12-15, 2012.

While only five players managed to score below par in torrential con-ditions at Observatory Golf Club, Alpheus Kelapile was as calm asthe eye of the storm and shot 72 to win Vusi Ngubeni QualifyingSchool.

“I really needed this. Last night I told myself to do whatever it took…today I restored my confidence in myself,” he said. His vision led himpast the wind and rain, and he closed the tournament at eight-under-par, claiming the first of 10 Sunshine Tour cards handed out on Friday.

He could see the finish line by the 14th hole and did not falter, finishingone stroke clear of Jack Kutumane, who shot 70 for his final 18.

“From the 13th I looked at the scoreboard and I thought to myself ‘you’ve got this’ and didn’t lookback. All I aimed for was to keep it in play: hit the fairway, hit the green. I knew that it was mine tolose, and I would not allow that,” he said.

Also earning cards were: Irvin Mazibuko, Allister de Kock (AMA), Elvis Sithebe(AMA), ThaboMaseko(AMA), Rocky Tlhabanyane, Makgetha Mazibuko, Sung-Moon Hohng(AMA), George Brown.Hohng and Brown ousted Neo Thubisi and John Bele in a countout after all four players finished atone-over. Finishing first took cool nerves and showcased the 27-year-old as a quiet danger in the comingseason. “It’s been a long, long time coming. I feel like I’ve worked hard for this and I deserve it.”

SPECIAL FEATURELAUGH OUT LOUDA

ost

Cabbage: Deep, thick, in-escapable rough. Also calledspinach. Green, leafy vegetablesare not good for your golfgame.

Caddy: Individual who carriesbags for golfers and assists themin the playing of the course.Ideally, a caddy should possessthe eyes of a big-game hunter, the strength of a linebacker, thepatience of a diplomat and thememory of a Mafia witness.

Carpet: The green. Soft, well-manicured fairways are also re-ferred to as being "like carpet."

Cart girl: The lovely younglady who operates the beer cart(a motorised vehicle that carriesrefreshments to golfers out onthe course). These refreshmentstypically cost a fortune, whichprobably explains why golfcourses hire beautiful youngwomen to sell them.

Cart golf: Term for when twogolfers riding in the same golfcart repeatedly hit the ball inthe same direction (usually intothe rough). An efficient but notnecessarily pleasant way to play.

Casual Water: A temporary ac-cumulation of water. The rulesof golf provide that a ball may

be moved without penalty fromany non-permanent wet area, such as a rain puddle. Tears, however, no matter how copi-ous, do not constitute casualwater.

Chilli dip: An improperly exe-cuted chip shot in which theclub hits the ground before hit-ting the ball, usually resulting ina shot that rolls just a fewinches. This is one shot youhave in common with JackNicklaus because everyone whohas ever played golf has done it.You've just done it a little morefrequently than Jack.

Club Weight: There are threeways to measure the weight of aclub: its overall weight, whichranges from about 13 ouncesfor a driver to just over 16 for asand wedge; its swingweight, which is arrived at using a com-plex calculation of the relation-ship between the distribution ofmass among a club's compo-nents and the length of its shaft;and its "bringweight," which isan estimate of its apparentheaviness on the 18th fairwayon an afternoon in July andranges between 21 and 46pounds.

Clubhead Covers: Wool orleather "mittens" slipped over

the heads of woods to keepthem dry. Zip-on coverings thatencase the entire club in wetsuitmaterial are also available andpermit the eventual reuse of afavourite club flung into a waterhazard, assuming that blindrage was tempered with fore-sight.

Comebacker: A shot that backsup after hitting the green. Or,for a high-handicapper, a teeshot that hits one of the teemarkers and ends up behindyou.

Cup: The metal or plastic cylin-der fitted into the hole in thegreen. Strictly speaking, it isonly the liner of the hole, but inregular golf usage players willoften say "cup" when theymean "hole," just as they fre-quently will say "just inbounds" when they mean "outof bounds," "Oh, here it is"when they mean "I can't findit" and "five" when they mean"seven."

Cut: A controlled shot thatmoves from left to right. Mostgolfers shout "Cut!" to their ballafter they see it heading well tothe left of their target, not real-ising that this is not an "on-de-mand" feature of a golf ball.
