About Xerox Manufacturing

Worth $17.6 billion, Xerox Corporation is the world’s leading document management technology and services enterprise, providing the document industry’s broadest portfolio of offerings. In March 2009, Fortune magazine named Xerox the ‘World’s Most Admired Company’ in Computers. Established in 1965, Xerox Manufacturing is based in Venray, Netherlands. With offices and production plants spread across the Netherlands, Ireland and the UK, its 850 employees are part of the Xerox Strategic Services Group and the Eastern Hemisphere Supply Chain Services. Strategic Objectives In line with Xerox’s corporate emphasis on sustainability initiatives and environmental care, the Venray manufacturing facility needed to significantly lower their energy consumption and reduce their carbon footprint through a high performance, available and converged infrastructure.

“As a manufacturer of toners for printers, Xerox has been promoting Green IT solutions to our customers. We have also ensured that our manufacturing operations remained sustainable and environmentally friendly. Therefore, it was important for us to ensure that the new ICT infrastructure delivers on our Green IT requirements,” said van de Pasch.

Xerox Manufacturing wanted a future-proof, reliable and scalable solution which would provide better value for their IT Investments in the long run. “While it may no longer be realistic to expect an ICT infrastructure to last for 25 years, we certainly wanted a reliable, high performance solution for at least the next 10 years, with equipment that would last more than five years. This would greatly reduce IT wastage,” said Wiel van de Pasch, Xerox Manufacturing’s Technical Services Manager.

“We wanted to build a pilot thin client environment in our Venray facility so that the team could weed out teething problems and refine the infrastructure to fit our business needs. This would then lay the foundation for us to roll-out similar deployments in our other plants in Ireland, UK and other countries. Finally, Xerox Manufacturing was looking for a trusted infrastructure partner with proven expertise to deliver on the innovations they required. “When you get the opportunity to introduce a whole new ICT infrastructure, it’s important to work with an industry-leading partner to implement best-in-class solutions built on the latest technologies,” explained van de Pasch.

Panduit’s Unified Physical InfrastructurePanduit’s Unified Physical InfrastructureSM (UPI) approach focuses on transforming organizations, providing them with greater visibility and control by leveraging on greater risk management, availability and performance through the integration and optimization of five core systems – computing, communications, control, power and security. The resulting progressive infrastructure offers operations flexibility, converged data applications, and greater energy and space efficiencies.

Panduit’s Data Center Solution, built on UPI principles, provided Xerox with a converged IP-based network that delivered cost and energy efficiencies. Panduit’s Data Center Solution leveraged real-time information to enhance visibility, security and safety across Xerox Manufacturing, while creating a sustainable infrastructure for greater energy efficiencies and establishing global best practices.

Innovative Green ICT Made Possible Through a Unified Physical Infrastructure Approach

Panduit helps Xerox Manufacturing meet its Green IT

requirements through a secure, reliable and flexible unified

physical infrastructure that greatly reduces energy consumption,

costs and risks.

Business ChallengesXerox Manufacturing in Venray, Netherlands had been running on a 25-year-old legacy ICT infrastructure to support its operations. Although a critical part of the business, the infrastructure was prone to security breaches which in turn, led to downtime, impacting on overall system performance and staff productivity. In addition, Xerox’s outdated legacy infrastructure was ill-equipped to support new, more advanced technologies that Xerox needed in order to further their competitive edge and respond better to changing customer demands. Among the new, richer functionalities that Xerox wanted to build on the ICT platform included wireless connectivity, enhanced security and Voice over IP (VoIP).

As part of the revamp of their ICT infrastructure, Xerox wanted to migrate from desktops to a thin client environment to realize lower IT administration and hardware costs. A thin client environment would also enable Xerox to have remote management capabilities, while allowing a more efficient use of resources which would contribute to lower operational costs.

Another key requirement was for the infrastructure to be flexible and scalable enough to easily support and handle all requests for Moves, Adds and Changes (MACs), while ensuring business continuity.

Panduit SolutionUpon contracting Panduit, Xerox Manufacturing decided to implement a new infrastructure based on Panduit’s Unified Physical InfrastructureSM vision, and a Cisco converged IP solution with a Citrix thin client Virtual Desktop Interface environment. The solution provided Xerox with a stable, reliable and secure infrastructure, allowing the company to achieve cost and energy efficiencies, while simplifying network management.

Turning all MACs into simple administrative tasks, Panduit’s Data Center Solution, built on UPI principles, greatly simplified Xerox Manufacturing’s network administration, thus providing the company the benefits of security, reliability, and scalability. Consequently, Xerox enjoyed greater cost and resource savings as the time needed for IT maintenance was significantly cut down.

Xerox Manufacturing upgraded to a Category 6 copper and fiber optic cabling system which ensured availability and scalability of mission-critical systems, while a fully redundant 1 Gb/s fiber optic campus-wide backbone and 100 Mb/s connection with Panduit’s Power over Ethernet (PoE) solution, improved the performance and reliability of the infrastructure.

“Panduit helps Xerox to build a PoE-powered desktop with as little as 25 W for a Thin Client PC, a 22” LCD Monitor and an IPT Phone. With a standby power of 0.0 W this must truly be the greenest desktop on the planet,” van de Pasch said.

Xerox is piloting the Panduit’s PanView iQ™ system for simplified and enhanced onsite and remote management of the network through intelligent asset identification and tracking to the physical layer. Panduit’s PanView iQ™ provides real-time information on network status, facilitating planning, implementation and documentation to provide a more comprehensive solution for overall physical infrastructure management. In addition, the entire infrastructure’s performance was guaranteed for 20 years, which is in line with Xerox’s goal of having a future-proof, scalable solution.

Business BenefitsThe new unified physical infrastructure provided Xerox Manufacturing with an easier, centralized management of its office building, data center and manufacturing floor. Panduit’s UPI approach delivered a highly secure, available, scalable and flexible infrastructure which Xerox Manufacturing declared an “absolutely critical” resource for its business continuity and performance.

Panduit’s Data Center Solution aligned Xerox Manufacturing’s critical systems to support the delivery of secure, real-time data and services, while Panduit’s Connected Building Solution converged traditionally dedicated building systems onto an IP-based network. Through its unified infrastructure, Xerox gained better visibility and control of its building systems and ICT platform, thus minimizing the risks of downtime, while realizing resource and cost efficiencies.

Panduit also addressed Xerox’s need for more efficient energy consumption at a lower cost of ownership. “With the introduction of our new thin client environment, power consumption has fallen to only 25 watts per total workstation, including a PC, IP phone and monitor” van de Pasch said. “This is a significant reduction if we take into consideration that an average work station with a desktop PC and a telephone usually consumes about 150watts.” In addition, the old workstation consumed 10 watts in stand-by mode (which is 80 percent of the time) compared to zero watts for the POE-enabled solution. With 50,000 global users this translates into a total annual energy savings potential of 14.5 GWh or over one million euros.

The new Panduit system delivered enhanced security and remote management capabilities which realized greater overall productivity and cost efficiency. By registering if someone was working from within Xerox’s buildings or from another location, any attempt to connect from two locations at the same time would be considered suspicious and automatically blocked.
