FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

� Time-history analyses with 2 methods

Seismic analyses of concrete dams : comparison between FE analyses and records

Massless foundation + Westergaard added masses

- commonly used in engineering practice (ex. CIGB workshop in Lausanne 2015), easy to use (modal analyses..)

- 1 damping source only : concretematerial damping (usualy 5%)

- the whole foundation is roughlysubjected to the same acceleration

mass foundation + viscous-spring-boundaries + fluid finite element

- less used and more complex : + take into account the propagation of

the wave in the foundation and radiative damping

+ compressibility of the water

- concrete material damping (1%), radiation damping in the foundation and in the reservoir

- waves spreads verticaly from the bottom of the foundation to the top.

� Inspired by ‘the goodness of fit’ (Anderson 2004) met hod thatgives some score to characterize how well a syntheticseismograms matches statistical characteristics of obs ervedrecords.

� The following caracteristics are considered for concre te dams : � Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA in each direction)

� Peak Ground Displacement (PGD in each direction)
