Hello and welcome to edition 62, and our sixth birthday edition. Happy Birthday to S40!

Not bad for a non-salesman, non-graphic designer, non-journalist.. I could go on but it’s a long list. Six years ago I personally delivered 2000 of the 4000 copies of S40 Local through people’s letter boxes - thank goodness now for the fantastic delivery team!

There’s no song and dance about it this birthday, but I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who’s called, emailed, advertised, supported, written articles for me, proof-read, delivered and all the people who have visited a business or event because of something in S40 Local. This bit is really important, it lets businesses know it’s worth advertising with us and keeps us going.

S40 Local has completely changed my outlook on life.

Previously I gave little thought to where an item came from, where it was manufactured or what effect buying it would have on anyone except me. Since working day in day out with local, small, independent businesses I make conscious choices with every purchase.

I can’t survive without the national chains, but I can make small changes and choices to shop locally where I can.

I love opening the front door to fresh milk in bottles delivered by the milkman - I do pay a bit more but it’s a choice I make and I’ll save it elsewhere.

Fruit and veg from the market, meat from the farm shop are small changes I’ve made that have a positive impact on the local economy.

I hope through S40 Local we’ve also influenced a few of you to make small changes and support our local shops.

So, the Easter Holidays are almost here and Spring is round the corner. I saw a picture on facebook the other day, it read “Spring is here. I’m so excited I’ve wet my plants!”

I’m not quite at this stage, but I’m looking forward to a decent showing from the yellow ball in the sky...

The Pomegranate Theatre proudly claims to be the oldest Civic theatre in the country. Which is true, but did you

know there’s been theatre in Chesterfield since the 18th century? And that Chesterfield corporation and council have been supporting it for pretty much all that time? The first evidence we’ve found for theatre in Chesterfield is an advert in the Derby Mercury in July 1767: ‘Mr Whitley’s Company of Comedians, now at Nottingham ...intend to entertain the Nobility and Gentry at Chesterfield Races’. ‘Comedians’ had a wider meaning back then and a Company of Comedians would put on tragedies and drama too. This doesn’t mean there was a theatre building in Chesterfield, just performances, but means there have been theatrical performances here in town for about 250 years. The next evidence, dated 1779, from Chesterfield Library’s Local Studies section, is a hand-written playbill (advertising leaflet). Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ topped the bill, followed by ‘A Dissertation on the Rights and Privileges of the Town’ given by the Chesterfield Town Clerk (wonder if that was a crowd puller!). The night finished with a farce - with rather subversive overtones - called ‘The Mayor of Garratt’. The actors in the farce apparently included members of the corporation and their ladies: you can’t get better evidence of support from the corporation than that!Interestingly, the playbill mentions ‘pit and boxes’ suggesting a purpose built theatre building, although we have no idea where it was. The corporation continued its support and in 1786 opened the New Theatre in Theatre Yard, located where the library is now. The first night (29th August) included “I’ll tell you what”, a farce by the lady author Elizabeth Inchbald, and “The Romp, Or a Cure for the Spleen”’ an operatic comedy by Isaac Bickerstaff.The way it worked then, and into the 1870’s, was the corporation would rent the theatre to a theatre manager. Such managers might have

the rights to several local theatres and take their players on tour, visiting towns when they were most likely to be busy. In Chesterfield’s case visits were timed to coincide with Chesterfield Races (normally September or October) and Chesterfield Fair. The races, and the auctions at the fair, would attract ‘Nobility and Gentry’ to town and this is when the theatre company would aim to make its money. To encourage repeat visits they might put on different plays each night. When no play was scheduled the managers would sub-let the theatre for other forms of entertainment. All sorts of things could be seen: hypnotists, ventriloquists, band concerts, travelling comedians, trapeze artists, lectures - even an act called ‘Jacko the Man Monkey’! and ‘An Evening With’ events, such as with Sam Hurst the English champion bare-knuckle boxer (1861): who brought his belt and silver prizes along to the show. There’s evidence that amateur dramatic societies would use the theatre. (Amateur dramatics have a long history at Chesterfield as we’ve already seen – we doubt the 1779 performances by the corporation were very professional!). Often the shows would raise money for charities like local schools, refugees, and the ‘Chesterfield Winter Soup Kitchens’.

However tastes changed in the 19th century, as the Theatre Trust explains on its website: “During the early 1800s theatre attendance lessened, partly due to economic decline and poor standards of acting and production. But also patronage by the middle classes fell as a result of theatre’s increasingly bad reputation and raucous nature”. In Chesterfield there wasn’t enough local interest in quality drama to fill high priced

seats and the theatre building wasn’t big enough to make money from cheaper forms of entertainment. The theatre also found itself in a dodgy part of town- by the Kennels, Chesterfield’s 19th century slum district. The theatre tried renaming itself: first as ‘Theatre Royal’ (1842) and then ‘Theatre Royal and Concert Hall’ (1863), but that didn’t help much and the decline continued. No longer able to get suitable commercial theatre managers to run it, the corporation turned to the Chesterfield Amateur Dramatic Society, but that didn’t work and the place fell into disuse. This extract of an 1879 letter laments those points to the Derbyshire Times: “The corporation possess a ramshackle dirty old barn, misnamed a theatre; it is down a yard inaccessible to carriages, and it has become so lost in reputation and in dirt that no efforts can induce the Chesterfield public to visit it, and all the theatrical managers who try it leave the town in despair and generally in debt also.” So in 1879 the corporation gave up on having its own theatre and instead gave a theatre licence to the circus in Corporation street (did you know Chesterfield once had a circus building?) which became the Gaiety Theatre of Varieties. The Gaiety was more down-market than the old theatre. Its first night acts included clog dancing, comic vocalists, Irish ‘characters’, and Nemo the Japanese Juggler; with a promise of Zazel the Female Gymnast for the following week. Essentially, it was Chesterfield’s Music Hall - but held serious lectures on Sunday afternoons.

The Gaiety too faced competition, this time with new-fangled cinemas opening in town. It changed hands a couple of times, was rebuilt in brick and reopened in 1895 as the ‘New Theatre Royal’ - a nice reference to the older venue, but with much the same line up. Seeing a need for a space for more serious drama, the corporation decided to refurbish the Stephenson Memorial Hall in 1898. This was renamed the Corporation Theatre in 1910. The old Gaiety again changed its name, becoming the Hippodrome, in 1912. Still showing lots of music hall style live acts (it was visited by Gracie Fields, and someone called ‘Doris the Child Wonder’) it also put on cinema – using a projector it fondly called the ‘Ever-Popular Hipposcope’. It became a full time cinema in 1930, but changed back to a theatre in 1938. That didn’t work out, it became derelict and was demolished in 1954. Corporately supported theatre continued however and in 1949 the Corporation Theatre – which had been leased to a cinema company - was improved and renamed the Civic. This is the theatre that is now the Pomegranate, it was renamed at public suggestion in 1982. At this time it also switched from having a permanent company to hosting touring ones.The Pom has been hosting quality performances ever since. To celebrate 250 years (ish) of theatre in Chesterfield, why not celebrate by putting on your posh frocks and enjoy an evening at the Pom.

Anthony Radford oversees Chesterfield Borough Council’s venues, which encompasses The Pomegranate, The Winding Wheel, The Assembly Room in the Market Hall and Hasland Village Hall, which combine to provide an entertainment offering covering a wide spectrum. Last year, £495,000 investment from Arts Council England’s National Lottery-funded capital programme, and £255,000 from Chesterfield Borough Councilenabled the refurbishment and the installation of new digital cinema infrastructure at the Pomegranate and development of the technical infrastructure at the Winding Wheel to improve the facilities. Resulting in a wide programme of films now being shown at the Pomegranate, alongside the ever popular theatre events and shows.Anthony explains “When we started programming the venues jointly, we noticed there was limited choice in town for the cinema audience and started to explore whether there was an audience for drama based films. The tests screenings saw a good response, so in 2012 we put together a bid for a grant under

the National Lottery Scheme, which was successful. One key criteria being to provide funds for organisations needing help to ‘help themselves’, and who could prove a long term future and clear business model.”The popularity of the new cinema programme shows there was a demand and the film programme has been well received. The equipment also enables them to do live streaming to the venue, “For instance tonight we are screening La Traviata, it’s being performed live at the Coliseum, London, filmed live and fed by satellite to selected venues – it’s really exciting to be able to deliver live West End shows, to Chesterfield, via the big screen.”There are film showings at 11am and 2:30pm throughout the week and some of these are seeing really good attendances, including children’s films which are proving really popular, in fact the recent showing of Frozen, was a sell out. “Getting people through the door to see films is also helping increase the audience numbers for other events, as people become familiar with the venues and what else is on”.

We have a bar and we’re well located with easy access to the town centre.“We’re lucky that there is a significant group of people with a strong affection for our theatres and they back this up with regular attendance” Anthony commented, “some customers come nearly every week. “We recently staged the West End production of The Mousetrap, a superb production, which broke box office records for a play” Anthony enthuses.“From May we will be offering pre-theatre deals, where the ticket price can include a meal before the show at a local restaurant, currently Calabria, Nonnas or the Thai Pavilion.”“Looking forward Chesterfield Borough Council need to firmly establish the Pomegranate as a cinema venue, screening the latest titles, and for the production side we’re setting the bar even higher, with regards the names and productions we’re looking to secure. We’d like to make the venue the first choice for local people, and encourage more people to think about coming to Chesterfield theatres for their night out”.

Tom is 23 years old and lives in Loundsley Green and has a progressive life limiting disability called Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He has been permanently wheelchair bound since the age of 10, struggles with movement and requires 24 hour care, which his dad currently provides for him.

Despite the frustrations of his condition Tom believes that even though his muscles may be wasting away, in God’s hands his life is Not Wasted, also the title of his autobiography!

Through his belief and endless determination Tom has been working to support other disabled people. In June he hopes to travel to California for seven weeks to learn how to become a voice and an advocate for disabled people. Through Joni and Friends, a Christian organisation, Tom will go as an intern in their Cause 4 Life scheme and learn how he can support disabled people and their families and bring back what he has learnt to his local community and churches.”

But before he gets there Tom has a challenge, he needs to raise in excess of £10,000 to cover the cost of his flight, accommodation and the specialist equipment he will need. Tom will need a carer to go with him to provide the 24 hour care he needs and the carer will also have to pay for their own travel and accommodation costs for the trip.

“I became a Christian at age 13 and attend Holmebrook Valley Church in Chesterfield. My faith has helped me over the years and although the condition has been frustrating through faith I have gained inner strength and confidence to do things completely outside my comfort zone, including writing the book and planning this trip”.

“The trip aims to support me and provide me with the tools to build relationships with people in the local area including other churches to share what I learn. I hope to encourage others to better engage with people who have disabilities, improving their experience, particularly in church, so they feel fully included in all aspects of church life”.

Overseen by another organisation called Through The Roof, Tom has already become what is known as a “Roof Breaker”, improving the experience for people with disabilities within the church; building friendships between disabled people and church members, connecting disabled people with Christian-led activities and serving the church to enable disabled people to participate more fully.

Tom’s autobiography Not Wasted by Tom Hardwick, is his story of disability and his journey of faith and is available in Kindle format on Amazon £1.99 and in paperback on Lulu.com £5.99 where it has five stars. It also has five stars and fantastic feedback on Amazon and the funds from the sale of the book will go towards funding his internship.

Tom is also putting on events over the next few months across Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire/South Yorkshire and Bolsover Districts, where he will be talking about his plans and what he hopes to gain from his experience as an intern. He will also be promoting his book in the hope it will inspire others to become more aware of how they may be able to use their faith to support others.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a muscle wasting disease which only affects boys as it is carried on the X chromosome and passed on genetically so a girl can be a carrier but will not develop the condition as they have another X chromosome to compensate. The prognosis for this condition is late teens/early 20’s so at 23 Tom is medically speaking in the twilight of his years and doing very well.

Sitting in the office of Mellors & Kirk Auctioneers in Nottingham, I’m rapidly trying to get a few words with Nigel Kirk before he takes centre stage in today’s proceedings where over 500 items are being put through the auction.

I’m visiting an Antiques and Objects auction, which takes place on Wednesdays twice a month, every quarter they hold a two day catalogued Fine Art Auction.

Mellors & Kirk regularly advertise their valuation days at St Thomas’ Church Centre throughout the year.

“The valuation days at Chesterfield have always been good for us” says Nigel, “you never know what people will bring to show you. The church hall venues are great for meeting people, relaxing and friendly, enabling valuations to take place somewhere that’s accessible to people in their community.”

Nigel also holds valuation days in five other locations around the county, although before St Thomas’ they hadn’t brought their roadshow to Chesterfield.

“We started looking for a suitable venue in Chesterfield after Mellors & Kirk held a sale on the premises of the contents of Thornbirdge Hall near Ashford. Travelling through Chesterfield and the surrounding areas a number of times I started to think we ought to try a valuation day in the area - we did and it’s worked well for us and also for those bringing cherished or curious items to us” explains Nigel.

It’s a long process to develop the kind of knowledge that the valuers need to have to enable them to value items that come through the door. Nigel started working with a fine art auctioneer after leaving school as a general assistant and worked through the roles. This was in an agricultural area on the borders of

the Welsh countryside which had a similar feel to the Derbyshire Dales. He stayed with them for six years, then moved to work for Neales of Nottingham, on Mansfield Road.

Nigel founded Mellors and Kirk in 1993, with Nick Mellors, who left in 2000 and Nigel is now the proprietor employing a team of nine staff who between them host the auctions, value items, prepare catalogues and generally keep things running smoothly. At view and sale days Mellors & Kirk provide light lunches with homemade cakes in their café area.

“The way business is conducted has also changed massively” explains Nigel “so much of what we sell at auction today is through internet bids. When we issue the fine art catalogue, bids immediately start to be logged from across the world. The internet means we become accessible from every corner of the globe at every auction, and with auto bid tools the customer bidding can do everything automatically even if they can’t watch the auction live online.”

Nigel is obviously a man who enjoys his job and is at ease in his surroundings, “I pride myself on creating a sense of trust between the business and our clients. We don’t come to the valuations with a bag of cash, at the event we will make an estimate of the value an item might achieve at auction, discuss it with the client and if they are happy we take the items to auction. This gives the process a transparency and the clients are welcome to come down and watch their items being auctioned, which can be really interesting and exciting.”

“And I’m still learning, we will always do our best to research and estimate values, but you never know what’s going to come through the door and that’s what I find exciting about the valuation days. People’s objects often have great stories and history associated, this

makes them interesting to me” says Nigel “at the same time we need to maintain a degree of decorum, some items have sentimental value and we need to handle people’s emotions carefully.”

“Recently at St Thomas’ a chap turned up with a pair of German binoculars that were in an extremely tatty condition but the associated history meant they returned £6,000 at auction.”

“At another Chesterfield event a lady presented a common World War II medal, but it came with a tribute medal. The tribute medal was issued in Australia and surprising to find it in Chesterfield. After chatting we learnt that the medal was awarded to an Australian soldier who married a Chesterfield girl and the couple set up life in Australia. Unfortunately he was later killed in action and the widow returned to Chesterfield, together with the medal. The medal attracted bids from Australia.

So what are your real areas of interest, I asked? “I have an interest in early printed religious books from the 17th century, a time of such turmoil for our country. If we ever have anything of interest in I do have to get permission from the seller to enable me to bid on items because we act as agent of the seller. That said prices at Mellors & Kirk are typically high.” adds Nigel.

I have to ask the ‘what’s the most exciting thing that’s ever come through the auction house’ question? “Our largest value item was a Van Breen painting in 2001, which realised a hammer price of £440,000 in our Fine Art Auctions.”

The myths of people accidently buying at auction aren’t true it appears, Nigel reassured me that no one at his auctions has ever ended up with an item accidentally! I could see how people could get carried away when bidding, but all sales have preview days, “people can view items at their leisure and then bid via the internet on sale day” explains Nigel.

As the bidding got underway I stayed and watched a number of the 500 items go through. There was a real mix of people, some were clearly there as dealers and experts looking for bargains, others simply to see what was going through and bidding for items they liked. I liked the feel of the place, a place for items to be recycled at the highest level, being given new lives in new homes. If you’ve never attended an auction before, a trip does make for an interesting day out, you never know you might just pick up a bargain!

FRUIT CAKEA slice of fruitcake from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding - in its presentation tin was recently sold for £420 at the Mellors and Kirk auction. Crown Speciality Packaging in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, made the tins for the royal wedding in 2011 so guests could take a piece home. The slice was sold on behalf of a former employee, who was sent a piece as a thank you gesture for his work.

Golfing has a tradition of an establishment set up around a formal old boys network, but as society changes our local golf club is evolving and developing ways to attract new members, relaxing some of the previous traditions.

I caught up with Trevor Glover (Secretary/Manager) and Liz Day (Chair of Marketing) to discuss recent changes.

Trevor explained “It’s often hectic up here in the morning, between 7:45 and 9:30am the course is busy and sometimes people have to queue for the first tee, but later in the day the course is quiet. This is a great time for newer players and those looking to return to the game to get back to grips with it - there’s less pressure from other golfers and it’s also now cheaper.”

To encourage people on to the green in the afternoons the club is launching a new Off-Peak membership, which means players can play after 1:30pm during the eight summer months and any time after 12:30pm in the winter months.

Liz explained “The package is on trial for two years and we may extend if it proves successful. At £500 for a year’s off peak membership, as opposed to £980 for full membership it represents a significant saving for those wanting a slightly more laidback approach to their golf.”

The idea was pitched to the marketing committee who recognised things are not what they were in the 50’s, or even the year 2000 when they had a waiting list, and agreed to move forward with the trial.

“Golf Clubs across the UK are having a

difficult time” says Trevor, “membership numbers having reduced by an average of 22% in the last five years. Here at Chesterfield we have a great course and a great membership, we’ve only lost around 6%, much lower than the national numbers.”

“We need to keep adapting to people’s lifestyle and make an offer that appeals to 30 to 45 year olds. The old traditions of the club house aren’t so appealing to this audience and that’s also why we started things like dress down Friday in the clubhouse. Golf offers some great benefits - time to escape with friends for a few hours to enjoy a round of golf and a catch-up and the five mile walk is great for your health. Here we have a great course and facilities that allow people to develop their golf, particularly with the help of our club professionals” says Trevor.

“We have 550 members today and we’re still a thriving Club, but it’s the membership that keeps us alive and we are seeing it dropping off so we’re having to be innovative and find new ways of doing things.

“We realise that the membership approach doesn’t work for everyone and there are people who want the flexibility and choice to turn up at any club and pay standard green fees to play a round. Lovingly christened as ‘Nomads’ in the golfing fraternity.

“In the area around Chesterfield we have regular nomads, they play once a week in the winter and twice a week in the summer. But, when they add it all up, these golfers

are paying more than the standard membership at the club. I understand they might not want the financial commitment but paying like this almost always costs more. For the same outlay, and they can still pay monthly, a nomad player could become a club member, enjoy all the benefits this brings and still have a significant amount to spend on green fees at other clubs. We’d really like to turn these players into club members”.

Off-Peak member benefits include full access to all the club’s facilities, including access to play in monthly and midweek medal competitions.

InvestmentThe appearance of the course and facilities at the club is extremely important. Over the past 18 months there has been investment at the Club of almost £50,000, all of it funded by donations and sponsorship from members. Hope House, our Starters Hut adjacent to the 1st tee, was provided by kind donation of Chris and Barry Twigg; BRM Solicitors sponsored the ‘tee signage’ on each hole; S40 Local advertiser Peter Boardman from Somersall Finance sponsored the club sign on Whitecotes Lane; and a replacement bridge over the stream on the 15th hole was sponsored by Prosperity Wealth Management. In addition Bristol Street Motors and Brettex Site Services have made donations to help with information signs at the club. “The voluntary financial support from members has been fantastic” says Trevor.

In addition to the member support the club have recently invested £250,000 in the replacement of the club’s irrigation system.

Online BookingFrom April onwards: Watch out for our new Online Booking System which will allow internet booking of green fees with the possibility of affordable golf for visitors.

It’s great to see that an institution with so much tradition is changing its outlook and the way in which users can access the facilities. If the new changes and the off-peak membership prove successful it may open the door to further initiatives which should help secure the future of the club for many years to come.

At Kip we pride ourselves on our improved academic results with all our students, but recently we saw evidence that we do much more than that!

We had Zara, a year 6 student join us in October 2013. When we assessed her Maths it was at year 2 level. It was soon evident that errors made her very nervous to the extent that simply entering answers into the computer caused her anxiety. She was extremely shy and lacking in confidence and self-esteem.

Sarah put together an individual learning programme that aimed to tackle both the academic gaps and build her confidence and slowly but surely Zara began to make progress. As she did, her confidence soared. Her mum was delighted about the positive change in Zara’s performance at school and how her classroom teacher had noticed a dramatic change in her demeanour. The timid rabbit was starting to disappear.

By December Zara had raised her maths level by a whole academic year – in only 2 months and by May the following summer she achieved level 4s in her SATs. We were all thrilled for her and loved the new confident person she had blossomed into. By working on confidence and self-esteem as well as her academic skills, the team at Kip helped to change Zara’s whole attitude to learning and her own ability. She learned that the sky’s the limit when you want it to be!!

It didn’t stop there!!Zara then went on to high school where, after one term, she was in the top 3 in almost every subject and was ‘roaring’ through the work, making friends and answering up in class. Our timid rabbit had transformed into a roaring lion!! So proud of you Zara!

The signs of spring are everywhere, the snowdrops and daffodils are in bloom and at Highfield House Farm around 200 new lambs are frolicking in the fields. Sounds idyllic but for father and son team, David and Matthew Prince it’s the result of hard work, science and good farm management.

And what started out as a hobby for David Prince in 1986 has become a thriving business. He’d always promised himself a farm by the time he was 40, so swapped their house for the farm on Stonedge, near Peak Edge Hotel. Working in the wholesale meat business, he knew one end of a sheep from the other, the farm continued to be a hobby.

Today I’m meeting Matthew Prince, David’s son and manager of this family business, “For me it started when Dad bought me some pure Texel sheep to rear as a young lad, they had small green tattoos in their ears which showed they were registered, so we were able to register them with the British Texel Sheep Society and started up the flock.”

Over time the flock grew and David left the wholesale trade to concentrate on the farm, trading fat lambs for £40 to £50 at Bakewell.

In 1996 and against all advice, especially from the bank, they opened a farm shop to sell a wider range of products and David started talking to Matthew about working on the farm full time. Matthew explained “I’d studied food science at University and had been working in retail at B&Q as a manager and decided to hand in my notice after ten years”.

Today at the farm, the lambing season is almost at its end “we start early at Highfield House, we breed pedigree livestock and the stock needs to have reached a certain size by July to hit the right market”.

In January, when lambing gets underway, Matthew and his Dad work from 6am to 10pm and Simon (who also works on the farm as the shepherd) takes the night shift. Between January and March they’ve seen 120 sheep produce around 200 lambs.

“We hold three breeds, English Suffolk, with the black faces, Texel and Beltex. The Texel and Beltex are a great shape with a quality carcass” explains Matthew, “plenty of lean meat, in the right places, whilst the Suffolks are maternal, excellent mothers with plenty of milk. Cross the two and you get well fed lambs with lots of milk.”

“We artificially inseminate all our ewes and about 75% take first time. We use semen from pedigree breeding stock that we buy for £50 to £100 a dose. Any that don’t take, are run with our own tups (rams), resulting in a good selection of quality lambs.”

I was shocked to learn that one pedigree breeding tup recently sold at auction for £145,000 and a top tup will sell for between £40,000 and £50,000. It’s where good money can be made, doses from the tups are frozen and sold at £100 a time.

Matthew explained “We’re not in a position to buy a ram for £50,000 but over time we hope to build the flock and our own rams.”

“Records show the bloodline and history going back five generations for all our sheep, it’s what sells stock in the pedigree market. More commercial farmers wouldn’t have this history. Everything is tightly controlled, all our sheep are electronically tagged, I weigh and ultra-sound scan the lambs regularly to check fat content and computer applications track the management and development of the animals, it’s a very scientific process”.

This hard work places the lambs at Highfield House Farm in the top 10% of national stock.

“We aim to sell all the lambs as breeding stock, but around 25% don’t make the required standards – we carry a few over to the next year and the rest are sold through the shop at about 20 weeks old. The timing’s important,

they’re weaned off their mother’s milk and have a few weeks on grass making the meat tasty and tender” says Matthew.

As well as lambs the farm has chickens for eggs and like his father, Matthew has added some Dexter cattle which are due to calf at the end of March. “These are for Thomas, my son, to grow up with. They’re a small cattle we can handle and the meat is fantastic, although it will be a couple of years before this turns into stock for the shop” adds Matthew.

The products in the farm shop are sourced locally; the beef comes from a breed called Belted Galloways – black cows with a white saddle, from Walton Lodge Farm, along with some lambs and pork. Other lambs come from Upper Town above Holymoorside and

their pork comes from Holymoorside. When low on stock they will sometimes travel to Bakewell for meat.

“Today’s buyers want us to be knowledgeable about the food, it’s all about provenance, people want to know where their food comes from, where it’s raised or reared, it’s point of origin” says Matthew, “over the counter we sell quality meat from really local suppliers and within the trade we sell premium sheep.”

In the last few years the business has continued to expand, with help from grant funding they expanded and opened up a new shop and added the tea rooms. The two businesses side by side help feed each other.

It’s a success story - the farm employs 20 local people, the tea room is busy, the business is growing nicely at a rate they can cope with – it’s a shame the banks couldn’t share the vision and see the potential!

I love the idea of ‘Independent Record Store Day’ for two reasons, firstly because I loved my old Sansui turntable and the vinyl I bought and played on it and secondly I’m an advocate of the independents, the people that offer us an alternative to the chains and the mainstream.

On Saturday 18 April, Maria Harris of Tallbird records on Soresby Street has planned a day of events in celebration of record shops.

“This year nearly 600 limited edition records will be released, from acts as diverse as The Foo Fighters, A-ha, James Last and the Small Faces. Last year Paul Weller released just 150 copies of a 7” single, it was in such high demand that Tallbird were only allocated one

copy. We had a queue down the street and round the corner into New Square, turnout was great. This year the minimum pressing of each single has been increased to 500 copies, so hopefully this will mean that more vinyl fans will be able to get the record they’ve queued up for.” says Maria.

Tallbird have also teamed up with Real Time Live, on Marsden Street, to host an afternoon of live acoustic music from local bands, the line up includes;

The Idle Hands (one of the best live Blues bands in the UK today), The Amber Herd and Lorna (both bands from Nottingham with a strong following), The Velveteens (60s-style girl group harmonies), Sonny Piper (Rock ‘n’ Roll and blues), Ben Miles (blues maestro), The House of Thieves (Derbyshire Band of the Year Finalists 2015) and many others to be confirmed plus the event will be hosted by Ashley Hutchings, Fairport Convention’s founder member and a good friend of the shop.

The event is free if you collect a ticket in advance from Tallbird Records or Real Time Live or £3 for people who turn up on the door, it all kicks off at 12:00 noon.

But that’s not all - Maria will also be releasing her first single on her new label Tallbird001! The 7” single features a track from the Idle Hands on one side and The Amber Herd on the other. “I’m really excited about the release of my first single, ready in time to sell on Record Store Day” enthuses Maria, “We’re selling them at the shop and the venue, a limited quantity of just 250 will be pressed by Breed Media in Sheffield. It’s my first vinyl release and who knows, perhaps the first of many.”

I was curious to find out how vinyl sales were doing. “Generally sales are growing, 40% up year-on-year and there were in excess of 1 million sales last year, however nothing compared to vinyl’s hay day which saw sales of 875 million in 1977.”

old love. “Recently someone in the shop commented, you’ve just taken me back 20 years” adds Maria. I know what she means, standing flicking through the bins took me back to Selectadisc in Nottingham. They had numerous shops across town, one for new albums, one for singles and one for second hand items, all busy and open until 10pm on certain nights… the fear of asking for something to be played!

I chatted to a customer in Tallbird, into rock, but like Maria and I, passionate about his music and his vinyl collection. We discussed doing something we don’t do so much today – sitting and listening to an album.

Music from downloads takes on a different purpose or role, once purchased rearrange your playlist and you might never listen to eight or nine tracks on the album. With records you played the whole side, flipped it over and played side two, the less popular tracks grew on you as you listened to the album over time.

How many of us can name more than one or two tracks from the last download we purchased? Not many I bet.

Vinyl is about buying something and soaking it up, it’s not meant to be background music. After visiting, yet again, I left with a lighter wallet than I went in with, having bought two albums! One newish by Bjork and one very old but released again on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl by New Order.

This interest in, what is now, a niche product is good for business at Tallbird. The only record shop in Chesterfield and the only independent place in the town centre, you can also buy a CD and their timing was spot on. Tallbird appear to be doing well and have come a long way in the 18 months Maria has been open.

By the time you read this it should be properly spring and noticeably warmer. We’ve had a generally mild winter which lots of garden pests will have survived, so keep an eye open for them. On the plus side, there should be lots of appropriate predators as well as more birds to add their song to the dawn and evening chorus.1. If you haven’t already done so, plant

out first and second early potatoes; they are traditionally planted on Good Friday, although the early Easter this year means it may be best to delay with the maincrops, which should go in around mid-April. Most varieties are frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero.

2. Lots of vegetables (as well as many annuals and herbs) can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, parsnips etc.) and can go directly into the soil, but that may depend on if you’ve had the chance to prepare the beds. There’s still a chance of late frosts - never sow into frozen soil.

3. If you’re not confident about growing things from seed, there will be lots of seedlings for sale in garden centres. However, they will have been raised in a very benign environment and won’t appreciate going straight outside, especially if it’s chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don’t keep them in a heated house.

4. Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover; tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres but they can be quite expensive for what you get, plus it’s far more satisfying to grow things from scratch. If they need watering, stand the trays in shallow water until the surface of the soil appears damp, as the spray from a watering can could be a bit heavy and flatten the delicate seedlings.

5. Roses and any vigorous shrubs should be given a feed with a general-purpose

fertiliser. You can buy specific types for different sorts of plants but can then end up with shelves full of packets or tubs which don’t get used (or the labels fade or vanish) that you end up throwing away. For ornamental plants save your money, although for vegetables the benefit of a better crop may be worth it.

6. Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can’t produce enough or haven’t got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertiliser spread around above where their roots will be, and gently forked in – don’t overdo it and damage the roots themselves. If you only have a little compost, either reserve it for your hungriest plants or use it to cover a thin scattering of fertiliser.

7. As the days warm anything in pots will need to be watered, especially house plants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth starts to sprout.

8. If you have fruit trees or shrubs their blossom may be damaged by frost, so try to protect them; this is more important for things like apricots or peaches, which are more vulnerable. Larger trees provide their own micro-climate so will suffer less damage (depending on the severity of the frost) and can be left to take their chances.

9. Lawns should be growing faster now, so may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first, and rake the surface. Protect any newly-sown areas against pigeons.

10. If it’s mild there isn’t a month when you shouldn’t be weeding, but it’s much more important now, especially as some weeds produce their seeds so early. But don’t attack too vigorously – check that what you’re about to remove isn’t a shoot of something that’s supposed to be there, or that you’re shaking weed seeds out and distributing them for the plant.

Chesterfield Canal Trust: Trip Boat Walk Up CruisesIn April the Chesterfield Canal Society will see the return of walk-up cruises, on their three barges (no need to book in advance).

Madeline will be running every Saturday from

Singing for Huts 1st HMS ScoutsThanks to the generosity of Holymoorside Choral Society and its supporters, the funds needed for a new storage hut for the Scouts and other community groups of Holymoorside, is well on its way.

The choir recently presented £750 to 1st Holymoorside Scout Group from the proceeds of their Christmas Concert held at St. John’s Church, Walton in December last year.

The 1st Holymoorside Scout Group’s storage hut was erected in the 1970s and is now beyond repair and a replacement building will cost £11,000.

New premises will provide clean, dry storage not only for the Scouts but other groups including Holymoorside Angling Club.

Over the last ten years the

Scout group has invested in new equipment, enabling them to travel further afield and attend camps in Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Switzerland.

They haven’t quite reached their target yet for funds for the new hut, so if anyone would like to make a donation, please contact Shona on 07803408969.

Holymoorside Choral Society is thriving under the direction of Andrew

Marples but there are still vacancies in the Soprano and Tenor sections of the choir.
