What Are We Here For? When someone raises the question of why the church exists? number of answers can be given. people turn to Matthew 28:19-20, where Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them obey everything I have commanded you. surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.” Jesus is saying we are here to make disciples, to baptize them and to teach them. other words, it starts with evangelism in extending the invitation to follow Jesus. What Are We Here For?When someone raises the question of why the church exists? number of answers can be given. people turn to Matthew 28:19-20, where Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them obey everything I have commanded you. surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.” Jesus is saying we are here to make disciples, to baptize them and to teach them. other words, it starts with evangelism in extending the invitation to follow Jesus.

Building upon this, in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) Book of Order it says that “In terms of its work, the first duty of the church is to evangelize by extending the gospel both at home and abroad, leading others to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and to provide for the nurture of that faith that all might grow in grace and in sanctification. is to be remembered that good deeds in ministry and service to others, offering relief to those in need, is the fruit of the gospel. the clear evidence of such fruit, all else is brought into question. , the Church must never confuse its primary task of evangelism (the Gospel) with the fruit of faith (good works). (Book of Order, Chapter 4, paragraph 4-3). I recently challenged the Session to consider, evangelism is to be our first duty or our primary purpose. That said, there are any number of ways to carry this mandate out and many different ideas on how to do it best. -to-one invitations through the process of developing a relationship where someone can see the impact Christ is having on your life have significant power. events play their role, as long as there is also the follow-up needed to ensure that someone who has accepted Christ understands what that means in an ongoing way. me say the obvious then, there is no one right way to do it and many different styles that suite our different personalities. point is to be passionate about it and to maintain our focus on sharing our faith as our first duty or purpose as followers of Christ and as a church. As a church we build upon this priority in our Vision Statement which says that…Our purpose is to be a growing community of devoted followers of Jesus Christ, as we invite people too…

Discover Jesus by gathering in worship

Follow Jesus by growing together in smaller groups

Love Jesus by giving of ourselves in love for others

Share Jesus by going into our community and beyond to reflect the Good News

In this way, I like to say we are a “4G” church that is focused on gathering, growing, giving, and going. of these aspects of our vision statement is important but we could say that it starts and ends with the invitation to discover Jesus by sharing Jesus. leads to the question, when was the last time you invited someone to discover Jesus? was the last time you shared your faith in Jesus with a friend, family member, or co-worker? If you are anything like me, in the day in and day out demands of life, we can subtly lose our focus on the fact that serving as a witness for Christ is our first duty as well as our greatest privilege. I seek to reprioritize the value of evangelism in my own life and ministry I invite you to do the same.

Sierra Pres Calendar 14

June Event Calendar 15

By the grace of our Lord, we began 2016 with over $47,000 in cash at hand, but by the end of April, as reported in our weekly bulletin, this was reduced to $14,778.

How come? following explains:

--Jan-April 2016 income was $203,636 vs. $235,000 anticipated income.

--Expenses for the same period were $235,831, in line with budget.

--For comparison, 2015 income for this period was $223,184.

Aside from the income shortfall relative to expenditures of over $32,000, the Session has noted with concern that income for the first four months of 2016 is 9% less than the same period in 2015. is the most that income has declined over the previous year since 2012. year-to-date Income is 13% less than budget due to seasonality or fluctuation of income over the months of the year with a significant portion of our income received in November and December. , our giving base has declined due to deaths and moves out of the area.

The 2016 budget provides for $58,750 to be spent each month. view of our income shortfall and its seasonality, the Session at its May 17 meeting approved a freeze on all spending other than Missions, Utilities and Personnel and authorized the Finance Committee to decide weekly on any exceptions. this measure we expect to reduce monthly expenditure by $10,000 to $48,500. Session and the finance committee

will continue to consider prayerfully other measures.

We ask for your prayers for the financial stewardship on the part of the congregation and of the Session. , we ask those who usually give in one lump sum at the end of the year prayerfully to consider making half of your planned giving in June or July. you.

A Prayer For Our Soldiers

Lord, hold our troops in Your loving hangs. Protect them as they protect us.Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.

-SGT. John Edward Blue-

The Children’s Ministries Team senses that God is calling us down a path different from VBS for this season and believe that He has great things in store if we take hold of His promises. Session has agreed for this year we do not host a VBS. We are excited to be planning a new opportunity called “Sierra Kids Club” which will provide elements of discipleship, outreach and growth in an on-going program. We all know that it takes a village to raise a child and we believe that by partnering with families all will become stronger and grow spiritually. This works alongside the already well-established “Gathering” by providing Sierra families with evangelistic and exciting opportunities to invite others to experience Jesus!

We recognize that VBS is a valuable outreach opportunity for Sierra as one body. The future of VBS will take on a new look as it is re-envisioned at Sierra. We are excited to see where God leads our church in the planning and executing of our mission and vision.

We are sensing that God has a unique call for us in this community. We seek your understanding as we are taking time to fully discern what that unique call is and begin to work in the ways that God is calling Children’s Ministries. We ask for your prayers and support. If you are interested in learning about ways that you can become involved in these new ministry opportunities for Sierra Kids, please email Katie at [email protected]

Blessings,

Ellen Gammelgard – CM ElderKatie Dyer – CM Director Our 36th Annual Yard sale committee had their first meeting, we are so excited to see what God is going to bring about this year. HUGE thank you to Jeff Patton and his team who so faithfully served as our Leader for so many years. is still going to “lend a hand” and share his experience with co-chairs Michele Hall and myself.

Ideas we are considering:

One Saturday a month (times, dates to be determined) identify a donation point for early drop off of larger items (no clothing).

Home Pickups of larger items; on a tightly scheduled basis.

In order to organize early donations/pickups we need a list of people willing to use their trucks/trailers to make home pickups with some able bodies riding along. We also need people who can be stationed at a drop off site to help move items into storage.

We are currently pursuing leads we've been given regarding off-site storage areas.

Other needs we've identified so far:

Additional volunteers to help set up and price in our House wares, Children's Toys/Furniture and Glassware areas.

Please call, email or drop a note in Gretchen's mailbox # 28 you can help in areas below:

Financial Peace University Spring 2016 Class Wrap-Up

Each Wednesday night for two hours over the course of nine weeks during February, March and April over 40 people from various walks of life attended Financial Peace University. were married couples, individuals, young adults just starting out and wanting to get a handle on their finances, those looking toward their retirement years and those who were already in their retirement years. everyone who attended FPU had one thing in common - how to get a handle on their finances and manage money God’s way. week a different subject was presented and taught and the class had the opportunity to discuss the subject and ask questions. from learning how to save and have an emergency fund to cash flow planning and budgeting, dumping debt, saving for retirement and college to stewardship, tithing and giving. of the exercises was to take an informal poll at the beginning of the course and then again at the end of the course to see how much progress the class made in the nine weeks. nine weeks the class collectively reported that they had paid off $51,400.00 in debt and had saved $104,900.00!! are impressive numbers! class participant wrote:

The class has been incredibly helpful in getting us motivated to make our money work for us by working out a monthly budget and looking toward the future with investment plans and college funds. We came into the class feeling like we were in a good place financially but this class helped us identify not only areas to work on but gave us goals to meet, and opened our eyes to areas we need to be looking into be it our insurance policies to snowballing out debt before we invest further in retirement. -- M.

Financial Peace University was a turnaround point and eye-opener for many of the participants. participant commented:

I learned how to budget correctly, came up with a plan to get out of debt, and have learned a ton about insurance, investing and retirement. have already paid off 5 credit cards or $4,000 since the class started and I am on track to have all of my other cards and cars paid off by 12/31/17. -- Shauneen D.

One of the basic money principles that Dave Ramsey weaves through the Financial Peace University course is the fact that God owns it all, and we are simply stewards of His creation. Psalm 50 God says:

“For every beast of the forest is Mine, The cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird of the mountains, And everything that moves in the field is Mine. If I were hungry I would not tell you, For the world is Mine, and all it contains.”

God owns the cattle on a thousand hills - and He owns the hills as well! of the most exciting classes is the last class on giving back to God what is His. tells us in Malachi 3:10 – 12:

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows. [Emphasis added]

Financial Peace University was a journey - a journey for over 40 people to take a realistic look at their finances and how they were handling them. journey to understand what God says about money and how to manage the resources that He has entrusted us with. was also the opportunity to change the way they were handling their finances, get out of debt and stay out debt and manage their money in a biblical and practical way today and in to the future. will host another class in the future, and I would invite you to join in on the journey to have Financial Peace.

Kellerman Hospital, Bwindi, Uganda (update)Great news - Meryl Wilson recently saw Dr. Scott Kellerman readying for a bike ride. “He looks good and there is no evidence of the traumatic head injuries he received during a Uganda mugging last November”. Services provided by the Uganda hospital compound continues to improve the maternal health in the country. This has encouraged the stakeholders to renew their commitment to improve the maternal and newborn health in the region. As a result, there has been an increased demand and utilization of the services provided by the hospital. National standards for the nursing students are being met constantly. The hospital now has a new school bus for transporting students on study trips and to sporting events.

Mark and Dayna Blair, Beijing, China, International Christian Fellowship: PioneersNow in their 7th year, they are encouraged by dozens of people being transformed from “raw to ready” as they provide services to King Jesus every year. They hear from these students, some mom and dads, PhD students in Western nations, professors, Government workers, pastors, and one woman is even a Vice-President of her African nation! Imagine having access to 82 universities -in our immediate “Jerusalem” - “We have a front row seat to see the Lord of the Nations build His church.”

Troy and Carolin Wilson, San Francisco, CA, EPC Start-Up Church God is blessing “The Table”, providing people gifted with leading and hosting! A new start-up group should begin in our neighborhood in mid-April. At each nightly meeting, there is a different host and leader. Please pray for them and for the finances needed. “The Tables” growth , congregational attendance, and giving is slow but pure - Currently there’s an average of 25 to 40 people coming to each Sunday worship.

Chris and Carolin Jackson, Cameroon, Africa, WycliffeNewlyweds are back in Cameroon. Literacy classes began in Feb. with 2 classes (beginning & advanced). Carolin is presenting the gospel of Luke using the “flip books”. She is also challenging the students to write their own short adventure stories. Chris was thrilled to know that all 600 picture books were distributed and he is now working on the book of Acts for 2017. Since there are security problems in Cameroon, Chris can no longer travel freely in Cameroon. As a result, the Jacksons are providing workshops for the nationals so

they can do the work in their own regions. They ask for safety for these language workers as they travel .

Luke and Jenny Herron, Bristol, England, African Inland Missions (AIM)Luke recently traveled to Djibouti and Ethiopia. Some old friends from a neighboring country came to hear him speak to the Ethiopian congregation. The pastor also asked my friends to say a few words and then the pastor asked for a offering for them. Many responded by laying the gifts at their feet. Amazingly, these two friends, who are unemployed and broke, gave the money back to the pastor for the work of the church! These two countries have been enemies for hundreds of years. Luke Herron reminds us of the importance of abiding in Jesus & the fruit, the transformation of lives, will be the result. Family news - Daughter Bethany & son Zeke are with them until July so their activity has slowed somewhat. With only Jenny traveling occasionally with Luke. He will be going to Kenya for meetings and visits in May.

Craig and Loren Linquist, Entebbe, Uganda, (Statistics Update for the Calvary Chapel Christian school)The school has 370 children - nursery thru 7th grade. It has 23 teachers, staff, assistants, & aids. The school is partially supported by Potters Field ministries which helps sponsoring about 65 students as well as subsidizing the cost of running the school. The school charges fees and does other fund raising activities to provide 60% of the schools income. This year, the school introduced vocational and practical learning in the form of clubs which include carpentry, sewing, agriculture, reading, newspaper (reporting & photography), sign language, scouting, and choir. Three of eight classrooms are in use but not fully complete. Water purification system is being completed. Please pray for funds needed to finish and sustain the basket/volleyball court as well as for the school itself.
