1As I was doing a light jog in South Lakes Park I could not help but notice the little acorns that were starting to fall from the trees. Looking at these acorns got me thinking about that famous passage in Matthew 13. The passage is the parable of the farmer scattering seed. In the parable Jesus points out that some seed fell on a path, some on rocky soil and some fell among the thorns. These seeds all shared one thing in common; they all failed to develop into plants.

I could easily see many acorns on the jogging path. When I looked further, I could see that many more were on rocky soil. In fact, most of them were in places that would prevent them from developing into a tree. Yet, as I looked around the park I saw many large Oak trees that obviously have taken root and grown into healthy trees. Each of these Oaks was producing thousands of acorns and as a result became a pinnacle element of the park.

Matthew 13 is still true today. I imagine if we polled those who sit in the church pews we would see that most wish to be like the good soil which easily produces fruit. However, if one is to be the good fruit producing soil then several things must first occur. Jesus tells us that the seed must first fall on good soil which represents those who truly hear and understand God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted (Matthew 13: 23).

With that in mind you must ask three questions: Am I truly hearing God’s Word? Am I truly understanding God’s Word? Am I producing a harvest of thirty, sixty or a hundred times?

Everyone should want to be soil that produces a harvest. However, if we are to become this type of soil we must take every opportunity to hear and understand God’s word. Doing this will lead to producing a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted (Matt. 13: 23).

1What are we giving to those who arespiritually hungry? I hope it is notlike the food described by a writerfor Car and Driver who reported on an extensive road trip through Tibet and Nepal in the 1980's. He wrote, “Tibetan food is reviled by even the Tibetans. It consists of slices of meat from yaks that are slaughtered only after they’ve died of old age. Plus yak butter tea (yak milk and salt), momo (a dumpling with a surprise squid like chunk of yak at its core), tsampa (blocks of barley held together by yak grease), . . . and chirpi (dried yak cheese on a string). Chirpi is food, but also wards of insects . . . Chapstick would taste better.”

Allowing the Lord to share through us that which is spiritually filling is simply giving out what we have received.

– salvation in Christ – fellowship with one another – fruits of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, . . .

The world is spiritually hungry for eternal filling. Are we offering the equivalent of yak by-products or the good things we have in Christ?

1On October 1, 1908, the Model “T”, built by Henry Ford, went on sale for the first time. It was designed for the masses. When I read about that, it made me think of the masses of people I will see and pass through as I travel to Europe a couple days from now. Masses of people without Christ. Masses of people who utterly reject the truth. While our Sunday school department and the other ministries of TNBC don’t quite get to “the masses” Henry Ford got to with his Model “T”, we have opportunity to get to the masses in Denton. Invite someone to church this fall. If they visit, they will hear truth. It comes from the pulpit. It comes from every one of our Sunday school teachers as they deliver their lessons. Let’s stay excited about what can happen this fall as we worship together. There’s always a place for you!

Psst . . . don’t forget – October is Pastor Appreciation Month!

“Dead Dreams and Futures”Have you ever experienced a broken dream? Something God instilled in your heart as part of His mission for you – maybe a job, a sacrifice, or some kind of endeavor - that suddenly ended?Sometimes dreams completely die and God says, “No more.” He shuts the door so firmly, soabruptly, that physically speaking you are sick. But spiritually speaking you are at peace andmore alive than ever before. How could this be?Moses must have dreamed of becoming a major leader of Egypt. Who wouldn’t after being rescued from a river as a child and being raised in Pharaoh’s household?! But then he fled Egypt and became a shepherd for forty years. King David dreamed of building a temple, but God gave that responsibility to his son, Solomon. The man “after God’s own heart” had to live with the fact that his dream would be fulfilled through someone else. The disciples must have dreamed of ruling on earth with Jesus but then He was crucified. Talk about a plot twist. The beautiful reality is that none of these biblical accounts ended there! Moses, after forty years in the desert, was called to stand up to Pharaoh and shepherd God’s people out of Egypt - his broken dream gave the Hebrew people a future. David bestowed wisdom and love into his son, knowing that Solomon would build God’s temple - his broken dream became Solomon’s future. The disciples’ sorrow soon turned to overwhelming joy at the sight of their risen Savior - their broken dream gave the world a future through salvation. And I cling to this hope – that there IS a wonderful, glorious, and better-than-I-could-ever-imagine future – after experiencing the death of a dream. If you or your child are struggling with a broken dream, failure, or disappointment, please remember (and bank your life on the fact) that God’s not finished yet! This song has spoken God’s truth into my heart, and so I pray this excerpt will do the same for anyone who is walking a similar path.

You’re Not Finished Yet (The Belonging Co.)

I am tethered to Your every word, My heart ever after Your heart first.I will trust You here, I will trust You here and now

My hope always set in who You are, Even when I can't see every partI will trust You here, I will trust You

I won't forget the things You've done, For I know that this is just the beginningAnd You're not finished yet, You're not finished yet

Until I see Your promise come, God with all I am I'll keep believingThat You're not finished yet, You're not finished yet

You don't play games it's not who You are, You're not the type to mislead my heartI can trust you here, I can trust you here and now

I've only known You to keep Your word, I've only found love at every turnI can trust you here, I can trust you
