Photo Shoot Suggestions

To create a beautiful branded look and feel for your website, you need to create images that appeal to your avatar. You want to be authentic, in your power and have that wow factor.

Before your photoshoot make sure you have already picked out the colors for your website and you know the kind of vibe and feel you are trying to create because your photographer needs to know that. There is a huge difference in taking a picture of you in a flowy white dress vs. a black leather bomber jacket.

For example, if you are a very bold person and you picked soft peach and teal for your website and your clothing for your shoot, when that new client speaks with you – they are going to feel a misalignment and not trust you because the colors and vibe of your website does not match your personality!

Keep in mind that you need to amp up your personality times 10 to grab people’s attention when they land on your page. Consider your clothing, jewelry, hair and makeup and location background. You want your unique spark to come through in these photos!

Then here’s the skinny on getting that perfect shot. If you want a attention-grabbing, branded look and feel to your website, you are going to need to use a graphic designer to create a header for you. It’s rare to get a photo straight from the photographer that doesn’t need some help, whether that involves retouching, color adjustment, or added effects.

You can try doing it on the cheap and having a webmaster crop a photo for you and throw in some text. But to have your header laid-out beautifully and for you to look your best is going to take some re-touching to eliminate distracting elements and enhance the overall appeal. So here’s what you need to know to have a successful shoot!

Before Your Photo Shoot:1. Talk with your photographer.

a. Tell the photographer what you are looking for – the look, feel, vibe as well as what you are going to use the photos for. Ideally you want several shots that you can use for flyers, bio page, header etc.

b. Show them examples from other headers/websites that you like. For a business header with freebie, www.journeystothesacred.com is a good example for the proper layout. See the example at the end of this doc.

If you are shooting for a business page header:a. Remind the photographer that ultimately and most importantly that this

is going to be a horizontal header so any photo they take is going to need to fit into that – most likely with space to the left side of you so that you can have a more neutral background for text, freebie and opt-in form.

b. Do NOT shoot in a square format if you want the photo to be easily converted into a header.

c. Always have the photographer shoot in the highest possible resolution, the higher the better. A 2:1 ratio (panoramic/wide screen) is preferable with as close to 3500 x 1750 resolution as possible. 2500 pixels horizontal is the minimum useable.* This makes the photo easy to crop for the wide header. Check out the example at the end of this doc.

d. Most graphic designers are fine with unedited high-resolution jpeg files.e. The only exception to the ratio and shoot-off center rule is if you are

shooting on a plain white background because then the graphic designer will place you wherever they please within your header. And yes, high resolution still applies!

f. If you are using a graphic designer, most prefer to receive the photos in their original form – i.e. without additional filters, cropping, or alterations.

g. Any other photos they shoot in a vertical or “normal” rectangular ratio are great for headshots.

* Always confirm with the resolution and specifications needed by your graphic designer or webmaster.

Preparing for the Shoot:2. Bring a few different outfits so you have some choices. What you think is the

“perfect” look might not translate or look good with the background so have options! Think about what image you want to project for your ideal client – what shows the authentic you in a professional, appealing way?

3. Bring your makeup & hair supplies with you so you can do touch-ups if needed. Having a toolkit of safety pins, bobby pins, mirror, hairspray, hairbrush etc. can also help if you need to style your clothes or hair.

At the Shoot:4. Have a mirror handy so you can check that your makeup, hair, & clothing looks

good and is in the right place. It can be helpful to have a friend with a good eye along to catch clothes that are laying funny or hair strands across face - and know Photoshop also does wonders.

5. You’re going to want some closeups, as well as some in postures that could be cut out and pasted on other backgrounds. Are there any “signature moves” you might do? Pointing? Arms open in a invitation? Meditating? Fist pump? Laughing. Just throwing suggestions out…

6. Shoot in front of a few different backgrounds. Choices are good!7. You want happy, fun, natural so let the photographer know what will help with

that. Music? Jokes? Conversation? The more candid shots usually come out better than the ones that are forced smiles.

8. BREATHE. It’s amazing how much we hold our breath when we are being photographed and that shows on your face. Feel your feet on the ground. Imagine your light radiating from you and touching all the people who are your new clients.

You got this. I am proud of you for taking action and putting yourself out there in the world. Can’t wait to see the gorgeous photos of YOU!

Here are some examples of Sheri Rosenthal’s photos that were taken in the proper ratio for a header. Do you see how they are the basis for a great header?

Here’s another example where you can see how the graphic designer created a background for the header:

Then cut and pasted a retouched and resized shot of Cara Andershock onto the background:

And finally added in the text, freebie and opt-in with Cara’s photo on the background:
