Silence may be keptMinister and People

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee

in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done,and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved thee with our whole heart;we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we earnestly repent.For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways,to the glory of thy Name. Amen.

The Celebrant stands and says

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.Kyrie Eleison Hymnal S91

The Collect of the Day BCP 166The Celebrant says to the people: The Lord be with you.People: And also with you Celebrant: Let us pray. Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (The people may be seated.)

A Reading from Genesis (9:8-17)God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood,

5

and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”Reader The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.(Silence for reflection upon the reading.)

Psalm 25:1-9 BCP 614

ANTIPHON1 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul; my God, I put my trust in

you;let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me.

2 Let none who look to you be put to shame;let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes.

3 Show me your ways, O LORD,and teach me your paths.

6

(Antiphon: choir and congregation, verses of the Psalm

4 Lead me in your truth and teach me,for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long.

ANTIPHON5 Remember, O LORD, your compassion and love,

for they are from everlasting.6 Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions;

remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O LORD.7 Gracious and upright is the LORD;

therefore he teaches sinners in his way.8 He guides the humble in doing right

and teaches his way to the lowly.9 All the paths of the LORD are love and faithfulness

to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.ANTIPHON

A Reading from 1 Peter (3:18-22)Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you-- not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.Reader The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.Hymn to Announce the Gospel Now let us all with one accord Hymnal 147

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ According to Mark (1:9-15)People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.The Sermon The Rev. Richard BanksThe Nicene Creed

BCP 358We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living

8

and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People (Form I) BCP 383With all our heart and with all our mind, let us pray to the Lord, saying "Lord, have mercy."For the peace of the world, for the welfare of the Holy Church of God, and for the unity of all peoples, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy.For Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Rob, our bishop; Dena, our rector; Kay, our deacon; Richard, our priest associate; St. James the Fisherman, Shallotte, the Rev. Frank Russ, interim rector, the Rev. Deacon Jean Miller; and for all the clergy and people, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy. For Donald, our President; for Roy, our Governor; for the leaders of the nations, and for all in authority, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy.For this city, for every city and community, and for those who live in them, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.For the good earth which God has given us, and for the wisdom and will to conserve it, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy.For those on our parish prayer list: Ed, John, Earl, Karen, Curtis, Jackie, Audrey, Jere, Eleanor, Barbara, Barb, Bob and Pat and those friends of the Parish listed in the bulletin; for the aged and infirm, for the widowed and orphans, and for the sick and the suffering, let

9

us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy.For the poor and the oppressed, for the unemployed and the destitute, for prisoners and captives, and for all who remember and care for them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy.Especially remembering Greg Coudriet and Gordon Keifer, for all who have died in the hope of the resurrection, and for all the departed, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy.For deliverance from all danger, violence, oppression, and degradation, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy.That we may end our lives in faith and hope, without suffering and without reproach, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, have mercy.In the communion of all the saints, let us commend ourselves, and one another, and all our life, to Christ our God.To thee, O Lord our God.Silence. The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.

Communion of the PeopleAll are welcome to receive Holy Communion at the altar. For the bread, place one hand over the other and hold them up chest high so the minister can easily place the bread on the palm of your hand. You may then consume the bread or hold it to dip (intinct) into the wine and then place it in your mouth. If you wish to receive the chalice, please guide it to your lips. If you do not wish to receive the wine, indicate by crossing your arms. After you have received the bread and the wine, it is appropriate to say “AMEN.” Gluten free communion bread is available. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. God.Voluntary My Jesus Calls to Me Johannes Brahms

Our worship is ended; let our service begin.Notes on Liturgy

During the season of Lent our Sunday morning worship will be shaped by Rite I in the Book of Common Prayer. The language of this older rite has been beloved by many generations and was adapted and included in the current prayer book. Each Sunday our worship will begin with a different litany. The purpose of these litanies is to assist us in taking an inventory of our lives so that we might live in right relationship with God and each other.

Music at St. Paul’sOrgan Recital featuring Jack Mitchener, Friday, February 23, 2018, 7:30 p.m.  The program includes works by Bach, Handel, Haydn and others.  The recital is free.

ANNOUNCEMENTSCHRISTIAN EDUCATION – 9:20 – 10:20 a.m.

Sunday morning Bible class in Lent will be based on Seven Last Words by James Martin, SJ. Jesus’ first words on the cross are, “Father, forgive them.” They remind us that the purpose of his incarnation, life and now death was reconciliation. He calls us to see the person beyond the sin and to experience the freedom that comes from forgiving. (Chapter 1)Even the strongest of saints have their doubts. In his response to the thief, Jesus reassures us that our faith has not

15

been in vain and that nothing will separate us from God’s love. (Chapter 2)

DEACON’S CLASS: A life-changing encounter with God's Word from the book of James. By faith we are reborn into the family of God. Absolutely, agrees James. But God wants more than justified infants; He wants mature daughters and sons. Faith is foundational, but it must be genuine, proven faith evident to the world. James's exhortation is a challenge to Christians of every age to keep growing up. Beginning Tuesday, February 20 from 10:00 a.m. to noon a study will begin based on the book of James. The class will meet in St. Paul's library and will be facilitated by Deacon Kay Swindell. Study book information: Life Change Series: James, Christian Book Distributors ISBN 978-0-89109-120-2
