The Northeast Johnson County Chamber of Commerce

is a relationship-driven organization that serves local

communities and area businesses. The most important

benefits of Chamber membership are connections and

referrals. The Chamber is the first stop for residents and

networking group is held the first

and third Tuesday of each month at

of 40-60 people, including prospective

new members, this fun, interactive

networking experience is a great place

to connect with other business owners.

Monthly Luncheons

Luncheons take place on the third

Thursday of each month. These are

great educational and networking

events featuring speakers from the

Kansas City area. Past speakers have

included Ronnie Burt, VisitKC; Dr. Jim

Hinson, Superintendent of SMSD; and

Chairman Ed Eilert, Johnson County

Board of Commissioners. Every January

the Chamber hosts the NEJC area cities’

mayors for the annual State of the Cities

luncheon.

Legislative Advocacy

Elected officials in Northeast Johnson

County are actively involved in

the Chamber and participate in

specific events to connect with their

constituents. These events include

local meet-and-greets for candidates,

roundtable discussions and forums,

State of the Cities Luncheon with all ten

NEJC mayors, Legislative Preview and

Legislative Wrap-Up Breakfasts around

the legislative session in Topeka.

Annual Gala

The Annual Gala is the Chamber’s premier event each year.

This black-tie event celebrates the success of the Chamber

and recognizes the achievements of its members with an

elegant evening of dinner, dancing and silent and live auctions.

The 2017 Annual Gala will be held on November 18th at the

Overland Park Marriott.

Golf Classic

The annual 18-hole golf tournament hosts golfers, sponsors

and volunteers from over 50 companies in our community and

is an exciting day of friendly competition and networking. The

Leadership Northeast

Leadership Northeast is an educational leadership program

presented by the Northeast Johnson County Chamber of Commerce.

The program is focused on identifying and strengthening the leadership

skills of participants and putting that knowledge into action in the

Northeast Johnson County community.

Leadership Northeast consists of nine all-day sessions from January

to May, each focused on a distinct area of leadership development.

The program provides opportunities for building personal business

contacts, hands-on problem solving and learning about important

issues from key business and community leaders.

The LNE program is in its 28th year and has graduated over 500

students. Graduates of Leadership Northeast have gone on to serve in

leadership capacities in their organizations, their neighborhoods and

in city and state government.

Vision for Leadership Northeast

• Engage students with each other to build relationships and

grow in their own self-knowledge

• Expose them to regional leaders

• Develop their own leadership skills and passions

• Educate them on regional strengths and weaknesses

• Offer tangible ways to serve their communities


EdgeJC is the young professionals group for the Northeast

Johnson County Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of

EdgeJC is to provide an opportunity for young leaders to grow

professionally, network with other area business people and

serve their community. Each year the members of EdgeJC vote

on a non-profit organization to partner with in the community.

EdgeJC membership is included for all young professionals

whose company or organization is already a Chamber member.

Fairway: (pop: 3,970) The City of Fairway, also known as “The

City of Trees,” is located within minutes of the Country Club Plaza

and Downtown Kansas City. Fairway is the home to the Shawnee

Indian Mission Historical Site, Neale Peterson Park, the Fairway

Shops, the Fairway Pool Complex and University of Kansas

Medical Center Research Institute. Average single family housing

sold for $432,915 in 2016.

Merriam: (pop: 11,288) The City of Merriam is located

just eight miles from downtown Kansas City and has much to

offer a residential community including parks and established

neighborhoods. The city is home to Shawnee Mission Medical

Center, the original branch of the Johnson County Library and the

Merriam Farmers’ Market. Average value of single family homes

was $167,368 in 2016.

Mission: (pop: 9,491) Mission has the perfect mix of amenities,

services, and quality housing variety to make it home. Restaurants

and a great mix of retail, a historic and walkable downtown core,

and a variety of residential neighborhoods makes Mission a

popular choice. Quality of life is enriched by parks throughout the

city and Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center. Average single

family housing sold for $175,119 in 2016.

Mission Hills: (pop: 3,601) Wooded hills, winding streams

and pleasant valleys provide a natural backdrop for America’s

premier garden community. Three golf courses form a green belt

surrounding stately homes and magnificent landscaped gardens.

Average single family housing sold for $1,091,436 in 2016.

Mission Woods: (pop: 182) Adjacent to State Line and

overlooking the Mission Hills Country Club, elegant homes in

the distinctive JC Nichols style define the city’s character and

neighborhoods. Average single family housing sold for $431,100

in 2016.

Overland Park: (population: 189,450) Overland Park provides

an outstanding balance of attractive established neighborhoods

and new residential development. Several new mixed-use

projects that combine residential, retail and office are under

construction and opening in 2017 in downtown Overland Park

and along College Boulevard. Historic downtown Overland Park

is a popular destination for shopping and entertainment. The

Overland Park Farmers’ Market, open Wednesday and Saturday

during the season, is one of the most popular in metropolitan

Kansas City. Overland Park has been ranked one of the nation’s

safest, affordable, “Best Cities for First-Time Home Buyers” and

more in 2016 by various independent agencies. Businesses in

northern Overland Park are supported by the NEJC Chamber of

Commerce. Average single family housing sold for $321,439 in

2016.

Each of the ten cities of Northeast Johnson County has its own personality,


Amos Family

Prairie Village: (pop: 21,877) One of the largest cities in

Northeast Johnson County, Prairie Village offers a unique sense

of community and distinctive neighborhoods. The Prairie Village

Shops and Corinth Square Shops provide neighborhood amenities,

vibrant dining, and shopping for Prairie Village residents and

visitors from surrounding cities. The city maintains more than

fifty acres of parks, including a skate park, disc golf course, tennis

courts and a swimming pool complex. In 2014, Prairie Village was

recognized by Business Insider as being one of America’s Best

Suburbs. Average single family homes sold for $263,724 in 2016.

Roeland Park: (pop: 6,827) This area has direct access

to Interstate 35 and the city is distinguished by diversity in

attractive home and apartment styles as well as fascinating art

and culture. The city was voted number one for its public outdoor

art display by a local paper. Roeland Park holds all-volunteer block

parties for its residents and has just completed construction of

the limestone walking path in R Park funded primarily by local

donations. Among other city services, the city is proud to offer its

residents leaf pick-up services in the fall. Average single family

housing sold for $167,007 in 2016.

Westwood: (pop: 1,719) A small and close-knit community

in a large metropolitan area, the city offers the best of both

worlds. Westwood’s central location allows residents easy access

to major shopping districts and areas of family entertainment.

Housing styles and sizes are diverse in this city. Average single

family housing sold for $234,131 in 2016.

Westwood Hills: (pop: 364) One of the area’s most desirable

mostly in cottage styles. A quaint shopping center, popular coffee

hut, and park are spots for neighbors to gather. Westwood Hills

was designated as a national historic district on December 4, 2013.

MerriamAs the City of Merriam continues to be “Just Right!” for residents, businesses and visitors, the highly-trafficked community along the I-35 corridor is currently experiencing a period of exciting development, forward-looking infrastructure improvements, and financial stability. In February 2016, the Merriam Town Center TIF came to a successful close, bringing in additional revenue that will benefit the local economy. As for new development, the completion of a new retail center at Slater and Johnson Drive will mark the completion of Merriam Village plans. In addition, city council approved a 2017 budget that holds property taxes steady for the eighth year in a row while continuing to fund major improvement projects around town. Merriam also kicked off the first in a series of five place making beautification projects with the installation of new public art at the corner of Merriam and Johnson Drives. MissionBusiness continues to be good in Mission! Residents have moved into the newly completed senior apartments at The Welstone at Mission Crossing at Martway and Metcalf. Tenant improvements and expansions are popping up all around town with The Peanut’s new Mission location, The Bar on Johnson Drive expanding, and Planet Fitness renovating the former Hobby Lobby space. Newly remodeled office space at the former Muntzel-Keatch building at Martway and Nall Avenues is filling up, just one block south of the Mission Farm and Flower Market open Saturdays May through September. These improvements add to the reasons why Mission was recently ranked as the #1 KC suburb preferred by millennials in a survey by Niche.com Inc.

Prairie VillageThe Prairie Village and Corinth Square Shops are the premier shopping centers in Prairie Village. 2016 saw a number of new tenants added to the two centers, with each location at 100% occupancy. Both centers

have been designated as Community Improvement Disctricts (CIDs). The CIDs

including improvements to parking lots and building facades.

WestwoodThe City of Westwood has embraced an effort to enhance the vitality of the community as it embarks on a public-private partnership with Tanner & White Properties, Inc. Woodside Village will be a $65+ million mixed-use development project that will include the renovation and expansion of the Woodside Racquet Club, almost 30,000 square feet of new retail commercial space, and 330 new residential living units all within a new town center and main street for Westwood near 47th Place and Rainbow Boulevard.

The district has been consistently ranked among the finest in the nation, earning praise locally, regionally, and nationally for its commitment to providing outstanding educational programs and services for students.

The district is building upon that strong foundation of excellence through many exciting initiatives. These include expanding science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning opportunities to all of the 33 elementary schools, construction of new facilities to offer state-of- the-art learning environments, and the 1:1 digital learning program which provides a laptop or tablet to every student and teacher to support teaching and learning.

The district offers a full complement of rigorous academic, extracurricular, and co-curricular activities to challenge students to achieve and explore their passions and interests. Additionally, specialized areas of study that prepare students for careers of the future are explored through Signature Programs that include International Baccalaureate, biotechnology, Project Lead the Way engineering, legal studies, medical health science, and culinary arts. This year, two new programs will be offered, Project Blue Eagle, a program providing students opportunities to gain training for careers in

emergency medical response, and law, and Global Systems, an exploration of careers in sustainable food systems for a growing population.

Professional sports are an important part of Kansas City culture. Kansas City is home to the Kansas City Chiefs, Sporting Kansas City, and the Kansas City Royals, 2015 World Series Champions. The Chiefs and Royals play at the Truman Sports Complex and Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park at the Village West Shopping Center.

Performing Arts is another integral part of the city. The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in

Kansas City’s history is showcased in many area museums. The Shawnee Indian Mission, located in the heart of Northeast Johnson County, attracts thousands of visitors each year who want to catch a glimpse of frontier history while vacationing in the Midwest.
