Celebrating preschoolers... and older kids, too! This spring, we’ll be marking the 15th anniversary of Chirp, our magazine for three-to-six-year-olds. And we’re celebrating with an expanded spring list full of charming books for preschoolers.

From the creators of the best-selling Why? comes a whole new volume of

questions kids ask that parents can’t answer. Like Why?, How? is a perfect

gift book, and sure to fly off the shelves just like its predecessor.

Also in the non-fiction picture book category, two beautifully illustrated

books: Picture My Day and Animals and Their Families. The former teaches

young children the words to describe their own lives and daily routines. And

the latter will help kids discover a little bit more about the lives of their

favorite animals.

For young readers of fiction we have Martin on the Moon; All By Myself!; and

Little Lamb, Have You Any Wool? These delightful stories with stunning art are

sure to become nightly requests at bedtime.

Of course, we also have plenty to offer older kids: the third instalment of

the Sir Seth Thistlethwaite series finds Seth and Ollie twisting tongues while

searching for Betty the Yeti. And we’ve also got a new, must-read resource

that’ll help nine-to-thirteen-year-olds figure out their finances — and finance

in general. From author Kira vermond, The Secret Life of Money will be a great

addition to libraries, at school, or at home.

I hope you’ll take the time to explore our expanded list for the preschool

market. And since we’ll be celebrating Chirp’s 15th anniversary all year long —

drop us a line if you’d like to celebrate with us!

The Secret Life of MoneyA Kid’s Guide to Cash

By Kira Vermond • Illustrated by Clayton Hanmer

If discussing money is a difficult task for adults, it’s doubly so where kids are involved. Not only is the subject loaded with cryptic jargon (Mortgages? Bull markets? Huh?), but it often fails to click with how a kid sees his or her world. Many preteens and young teens do not yet have a job, and even if they do, their financial responsibilities are miles away from grown-up money issues. In other words, not only is money a little overwhelming and mysterious for kids, it’s also seen as none of their concern.

The Secret Life of Money addresses this last point in particular. Its central message is that money affects us deeply and that kids can have an effect on it, too. This book uses odd anecdotes, engaging comics, and a wealth of surprising everyday connections to help young readers see and understand cash from an entirely different angle. From the history of different currencies to why we buy what we buy, from how charities and credit cards work to saving and investing, and a whole lot more, readers will gain not only an appreciation for the myriad ways that money changes, influences, and even betters their lives, but also arrive at an understanding of the control they have over it.

KIRA vERMOND is an award-winning writer with over 1000 articles to her name. She is a frequent contributor to the Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, Today’s Parent, and PROFIT, and the author of Earn, Spend, Save: The Savvy Guide to a Richer, Smarter, Debt-free Life. She lives in Guelph, ON.

CLAYTON HANMER writes and illustrates “CTON’s Corner,” a popular monthly feature in OWL Magazine. The winner of many industry awards, his work appears in such diverse publications as National Geographic Kids, The Walrus, and the New York Times. He lives in Toronto.

• Far from a “how-to,” The Secret Life of Money helps readers understand the culture of money, its history, and its impact on society

Animals and Their FamiliesBy Barbara Nascimbeni

Featuring playful illustrations and small vignettes of text, Animals and Their

Families crosses continents and habitats to introduce children to nearly three dozen land-, sea-, and tree-dwelling animals, including gazelles, penguins, owls, and more.

Each spread is rich with information and will help a child explore the animal kingdom in many simple and accessible ways. A new creature is introduced in silhouette, while the facing page shows that same creature in its natural habitat, playing with, caring for, or teaching its young. All members of the animal family — male and female, adult and baby — are illustrated in warm colors and identified by the proper term. Small bits of text share with young readers the sound each animal makes, where it lives, and what it eats. Animals and Their Families is a must-have book for any young child curious about the animal kingdom.

BARBARA NASCIMBENI is an Italian-born illustrator who studied in Milan. She has done work for publishers internationally and her books are translated into many languages. She now divides her time between Hamburg, Germany and Sorède, France.

By Séverine Cordier and Cynthia Lacroix

Through simple words and hundreds of warm and contemporary illustrations, Picture My Day explores the key moments that occur in a single day for three young children. From daybreak to

bedtime, readers will follow these two sisters and their brother as they eat breakfast, get dressed, play games, go to the park, explore nature, take a bath, and more.

Throughout the book, objects like the clothes pinned to the laundry line, the musical instruments in the playroom, and the vegetables spilling from a grocery bag are clearly labeled, inviting young readers to learn new words and to categorize objects. Plus, readers are introduced to simple concepts like flavors, colors, and seasons, too.

More than just an illustrated dictionary, Picture My Day is a kind of scrapbook of what life is like for young children, from first words to first situations. And, with lots of little shared moments between affectionate family members on display, children and parents alike will delight in poring over the pages of this picture book.

Little Lamb, Have You Any Wool?By Isabel Minhós MartinsIllustrated by Yara Kono

Through charming dialogue and warm illustrations, Little Lamb, Have You Any Wool? tells the story

of a young child and his lamb preparing for the cold winter ahead. The little boy asks the lamb if he can use its wool to protect his body from his head to his toes from the coming frost.

The lamb agrees, and the boy uses the soft wool to make himself a coat, a scarf, some socks, and everything else he needs. But then, he wonders, won’t his newly shorn little lamb be cold? In the spirit of cooperation and caring friendship, the boy makes another set of winter clothes for the lamb. Now, they are both warm and ready to face winter together!

All By Myself!By Géraldine ColletIllustrated by Coralie SaudoTranslated by Sarah Quinn

When five hens leave the coop to go pecking for grain, five little chicks are left all by themselves for the day. At first the chicks — Ivan,

Lily, Leonard, Shirley, and narrator Anthony — cry. Then, they get scared: what if their moms never come home? What if a fox finds them? The chicks must work together to brave the day without their mothers.

When the hens return to the coop with delicious grain at lunchtime, all but one of the chicks — Anthony — fall upon the food ravenously. Bolstered by his triumphant day at home alone, Anthony pauses to declare that he is ready to eat without help for the first time.

A beloved book in its original French, All By Myself! is a plucky tale about cooperation and independence. Told in part through mixed media illustrations and energetic text, this picture book will inspire and entertain young readers as they approach their own growing up milestones.

GÉRALDINE COLLET is the prolific author of many beloved children’s books in her native French. Previously a history teacher and world traveler, she began to write children’s books when she had her two daughters. She lives in Saint-Quentin, France.

CORALIE SAUDO is an innovative illustrator who began her career in web design in France. While she still works in this industry, she has found her true passion lies in creating mixed media illustrations for children’s books. She now lives in Ireland, where she spends a lot of time on the beach, looking for treasures to bring to life with her pencils, camera, and computer mouse.

Martin on the MoonBy Martine AudetIllustrated by Luc MelansonTranslated by Sarah Quinn

An active daydreamer, Martin can’t help his mind from wandering on the first day of school. His teacher’s

waving arms remind him of the seagulls that fly along the river banks, which reminds him of a summer trip he took with his mother, which reminds him of a poem he wrote, which reminds him...

When his teacher gently calls him back to Earth, Martin is embarrassed about his inattention. But when his whole class laughs along with him, Martin happily realizes that his imagination can help him make friends and have fun at school.

The spirit of this whimsical story comes alive through the pairing of inquisitive and unexpected words and simple yet surreal illustrations. Nominated for the Prix TD de littérature canadienne pour l’enfance et la jeunesse in its original French, Martin on the Moon explores the poetry, beauty, and possibility of the first day of school.

MARTINE AUDET is the author of many award-winning works of poetry, which have been translated into several languages, including English, Czech, German, Italian, and Spanish. She lives in Montreal.

LUC MELANSON has illustrated a number of award-winning children’s books. In 2002 his book Le grand voyage de monsieur (The Grand Journey of Mr. Man) won the Governor General’s Award for Children’s Illustration and was also selected for the IBBY Canada Honour List. He lives in Laval, QC.

CURRICULUM Language Arts: Writing; ReadingVisual Arts: Creating; Artistic Perception; Creative ExpressionPick Up Your Pen

The Art of HandwritingBy Monica Dengo

At first a seemingly simple workbook to encourage children (or anyone!) to

practice handwriting, Pick Up Your Pen is actually an invitation to envision handwriting as an art form. As less and less time is spent on handwriting in school, this book is a creative — and appealing — way to get kids practicing the skill without it feeling like homework.

The book features contemporary italic script, rather than traditional cursive, and takes a modern approach to handwriting that will appeal to children who are used to seeing type on a screen. In fact, Steve Jobs, former CEO of Apple, credits his lessons in italic script for the clean fonts showcased by Apple products.

Author Monica Dengo encourages readers to see the rhythm and musicality of a line and to become artists with every stroke of the pen. And the high production values will make them feel like they are “writing” their own book. Each page also offers a lesson in letterforms and proportions and leaves ample room for children to doodle and experiment. It’s a book that enables kids to explore a new (or maybe retro) form of self-expression.

MONICA DENGO is an Italian-born artist and designer who moved to California in 1993 to study figure drawing with Eleanor Dickinson. She now divides her time between Italy and San Francisco, CA, giving workshops and teaching. She has exhibited in Belgium, Italy, Japan, Finland, Pakistan, and the United States.

About Sir Seth ThistlethwaiteThis chapter-book series chronicles the adventures of 10-year-old buddies Seth Thistlethwaite and Ollie Everghettz. The two buddies, who’ve dubbed themselves the Mighty Knights of Right & Honor, are out to save the world — or solve even smaller dilemmas — embarking on some imaginative “daily knightly” adventures. The tongue-twisting humor, action, and adventure of each story makes this series both challenging and appealing — especially to boys.

Book ThreeSir Seth Thistlethwaite Seeks the Truth of Betty the YetiBy Richard ThakeIllustrated by Vince Chui

Having finally escaped from the underground Queendom of Claire in book two of this series, Sir Seth and Sir Ollie eagerly head home —

but soon find themselves in yet another land: the snowy Ah Ah Kaachu, a sleepy place that lives in the shadow of a giant mountain.

Of course, this new land has its own plagues and problems. Specifically, a frightening Yeti named Betty, who threatened the inhabitants with a devastating avalanche ten years ago. They’ve already moved their town once to escape destruction — now, as the snow stirs once again on the Yeti’s mountain, it appears that not even the new village of Kaachu is safe.

Or so says Elynor, the Faerie Queen of Ah Ah Kaachu, who implores the Mighty Knights to help the town. But as Sir Seth and Sir Ollie journey up, across, over, and inside the ancient peak, they find there’s more to be afraid of on this giant mountain than a hairy Yeti. And, as the friends get separated in the wake of yet another avalanche, their mission becomes a two-pronged race against time — one knight hurrying to warn the village of the worst avalanche yet, the other fighting to bring old enemies together to vanquish a newer, and greater, foe.

RICHARD THAKE has finally found the time to write the Sir Seth series — a thinly disguised glimpse into his own childhood adventures exploring the Don River valley and The Beach areas of Toronto. He lives in Newcastle, ON.

vINCE CHUI has worked on character design for video games for Sega, Xbox 360, and PS3. He lives in Toronto.

The Wildlife ABC A Nature Alphabet BookBy Jan Thornhill

Governor General’s Award finalist The Wildlife ABC is now available as a newly formatted paperback! Nature in all its splendor leaps off the pages of this magnificent early learning primer, which features exotic and familiar

animals from around the world. From A is for Auk to Z is for Zoo, this alphabet book communicates simple information through colorful illustrations and rhyming text; every page will spark young readers’ interest and imagination. At the end of the book, “Nature Notes” provide additional information on each of the featured animals and their habitats, encouraging children to spend more time with this rich read.

over in the MeadowAdapted and illustrated by Jan Thornhill

For more than 100 years, Over in the Meadow — a traditional southern Appalachian counting rhyme — has been a joyous introduction for young children to counting, rhyming, and nature. In this lyrical book, readers will meet ten different meadow-dwelling mother animals and their babies,

brought to life by Jan Thornhill in an ingenious way. Thornhill uses everyday objects to construct this imaginary meadow: a beaver’s dam is built of pretzels, a dragonfly flits with paper clip wings, and fish shimmer with coins for scales. Children will enjoy identifying these familiar objects — a “Where is It?” guide is included at the back of the book — as much as they will enjoy the sing-song cadence of this rhyme.

JAN THORNHILL is an award-winning writer and illustrator who has always had a strong interest in nature and the environment. Several of her books have been translated into different languages and published in countries around the world. She lives in Havelock, ON.

Three award-winning picture books — now available in paperback!

My Think-a-ma-JinkBy Dave Whamond

Since its publication in 2009, My Think-a-ma-Jink has found its way into the hearts — and imaginations — of thousands of children. Fresh off a win at the 2011 Blue Spruce Awards, My Think-a-ma-Jink is now available in paperback!

It’s Jack’s sixth birthday and he’s not even excited. Model airplanes, stuffed dinosaurs...not even a talking robot can break him free of his bad mood. Enter a mysterious gift from Jack’s equally mysterious Uncle Doug. Within an ordinary brown box glows the Think-a-ma-Jink, a bizarre contraption that claims to bend the laws of time and space. With this gadget, no idea is too fantastic to be realized, no world too distant to be visited, no personality too zany to be adopted.

With his younger sister, Marie, at his side, Jack discovers a universe of infinite possibilities — one of cotton-candy-breathing dragons, ancient forests, and space-traveling hot-air balloons. But when the Think-a-ma-Jink is destroyed in a shape-shifting struggle, Jack must learn to harness the power of his imagination or risk being eternally bored.

DAvE WHAMOND has a syndicated cartoon strip called “Reality Check,” which appears daily in the Miami Herald, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Chicago Sun-Times, and Calgary Herald. His work has also appeared repeatedly in the pages of chickaDEE and OWL magazines. He lives in Calgary.

Not Your Typical Book about the environmentBy Elin Kelsey Illustrated by Clayton Hanmer

We live in a time of heightened environmental awareness, and this knowledge is creating a generation of kids with eco-anxiety — the world is doomed, isn’t it? Maybe not, as Elin Kelsey

This book aims to allay kids’ fears by showing them what a remarkable time they live in: smart technologies, innovative ideas, and a growing commitment to alternative lifestyles are exploding around the world. Profiles of real people seeking viable solutions to the world’s problems and comic strips that show the hidden connections between familiar things like video games and gorillas round out this fresh, hopeful look at the environment and the future.

Story Voyages Through History1750-1899

In the mid-18th century, the colonies in America were set to become a place of great

opportunity, wealth, and freedoms. But while some groups prospered quickly, many

others faced difficult struggles to keep their rights, their lands, and their cultures.

And throughout the next 150 years, children experienced all of these challenges.

Whether as drummer boys in the Civil War; Chinese immigrant workers on the

Transcontinental Railroad; African-American students attending school for the first

time; or families of factory workers in the industrial revolution, young boys and

girls witnessed changes that would go on to change the country.

Author Rona Arato places readers into the shoes of children who are living

in these influential times in American history. On an American Day Volume 1 allows

children to witness a pivotal day in the life of a child just like them—searching

for answers in a world that is very different from their own.
