Preface Fetal Monitoring Anthony O. Odibo, MD, MSCE George A. Macones, MD, MSCE Guest Editors It has been a great privilege for us to be invited as guest editors for this edition of Clinics in Perinatology devoted to Fetal Monitoring. Recent developments in perinatology especially with respect to attempts at steamlining the terminology used in categorizing intrapartum fetal monitoring demonstrate the importance of the chosen topic for this edition. It is evident that tailoring our monitoring efforts to those pregnancies determined to be at the highest risk will produce the best results in our attempt at preventing peri- natal morbidity and mortality. This edition therefore begins with a review of screening efforts at identifying at-risk pregnancies by Tuuli and Odibo. This is followed by an overview of clinical paradigms used for classifying fetal growth restriction by Jason Gardosi. The next series of articles are devoted to monitoring at-risk pregnancies with specific emphasis on amniotic fluid volume, biophysical profile, and electronic fetal monitoring. The evaluation of high-risk fetuses using Doppler sonography has been deliberately split into four articles to provide a more detailed review of the role of the multiple vessels that are being proposed. We have invited the experts in the current use of Doppler technology to accomplish the above aim.
