Parish Office PASTORAL POST
Written by Fr. Tony
With Palm Sunday this weekend, Holy Week 2019 is upon us. I invite all of us
to make this week different from every other week. One of the best ways to do
this is by participating in the Liturgies of the Church.
• THURSDAY, APRIL 18 AT 7:00 PM: HOLY THURSDAY
At this Mass, we celebrate the Lord’s Final Supper with His disciples. After the
homily, we will have the foot washing, which reminds us that our Lord took
the form of a servant and invites us to do the same. At the end of the Mass, we
will process around the Church with the Body of Christ, the sacrament
instituted by Jesus at the Last Supper. To stress the reverence due to the
Eucharist, incense will be used. The procession will end at the tabernacle and
the congregation will leave in silence. Those who wish to stay and pray (or
leave and come back) can do so until 10 PM.
• FRIDAY, APRIL 19 AT 3:00 PM: GOOD FRIDAY
Note the time change for this year. We will gather for our service at 3:00 PM,
the hour that Jesus died. This is the one day of the year when Mass is not
celebrated. Today, we will have Holy Communion, but it is from the leftovers
from Holy Thursday. Also during this service, we will hear the Passion account,
make prayers of intercession, and venerate the Cross. Confessions will be
available following the service for those who wish to make a confession. Also,
you are invited to Stations of the Cross in the evening at 7:00 PM.
• SATURDAY, APRIL 20 AT 8:30 PM: HOLY SATURDAY
This is the most sacred night when we start in darkness with an Easter fire,
candles, and extended readings from the Old Testament story of salvation.
Then, as the Mass progresses, we start to realize the joy of the Resurrection.
We will have New Testament readings, Baptisms, Confirmations, and First
Communions. This is the longest Mass of the year, but does count for your
Easter Mass. There will be no 5:00 PM Mass that Saturday and incense will be
used.
• SUNDAY, APRIL 21 AT 9:00 AM AND 11:00 AM: EASTER
Easter morning is a day of joy. During these Masses, we will all have a chance
to renew our Baptismal promises. Members of our Haitian, Nigerian, and
Brazilian communities will also gather throughout the rest of the day to
continue the Easter Feast.
STEWARDSHIP MEDITATION
“I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three times that
you know Me.” (Luke 22:34)
How many times have you heard someone make a disparaging comment about
Jesus or our Catholic faith? How did you react? Do you remain quiet not to
cause a disturbance? Or, do you remain quiet because you believe people will
think negatively about you? Pray for the courage to speak up and enter into a
respectful dialogue when the opportunity arises.
