NOVEMBER 2017

Welcome to the November issue of the magazine. I would like to say

thank you to the people who gave jumble for our sale on 07 October, we

had jumble from as far away as Portsmouth as well as from Stickney,

Stickford and New Bolingbroke. The amount raised on the day was

£277.30. The remaining items have gone off in various directions to be

sold, nothing will be wasted! The final total should be available for the

next magazine. A big thank you to the people who came along on the

day to buy items and have a cuppa and a cake, every sale adds to the

total. Finally, a very big thank you to the people who worked on the

stalls, setting up and clearing away and also the helpers in the kitchen.

A big welcome to any new comers to the village, hopefully you will soon

settle in and take part in village life. You will find lots of information in

the magazine and all the important telephone numbers are on the back

cover.

ST LUKE’S CHURCH

In November we enter a season of Remembrance. We begin with a Bereavement

Memorial Service on November 05 at 5.00pm in St Luke’s Church. During this

service we will remember all those who have died this year, and whose funerals we

have been privileged to take part in. Their names will be read out and candles will

be lit in their memory. If you have any additional names to be read, pop in to the

Church and add them to the list you will find at the back. Alternatively, pass the

names to our Church Wardens, Bev Gosling (480641) or Sandra Boone (480802).

Over the following weekend, we will celebrate Armistice Day (11 November) which

this year falls on a Saturday. We will gather at the War Memorial at 10.45am for a

short service of remembrance and the traditional wreath-laying. Refreshments will

then be served within the Church. All are invited to attend.

By the end of the month, our thoughts will be turning towards our Advent and

Christmas Celebrations. Our Christmas Bingo will be held on Saturday 25

November in the Youth Centre at 7.30pm.

It is our tradition in St Luke’s to run discussion groups through Advent and Lent. If

you would like to take part in an Advent Group during December, have a word with

Rev. Fran (481183).

Ten facts about Bonfire Night

1. 5 November is known as Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night.

2. Guy Fawkes was born on 13 April 1570 in York, and died on 31 January 1606 in London.

3. He was alive during the end of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign, and the beginning of King James I’s reign.

4. Guy Fawkes was a Catholic, and didn’t agree with the Protestant faith of the King.

5. Guy became friends with Robert Catesby, who had an idea to kill the King by blowing up the houses of Parliament.

6. It was actually Robert Catesby who led the Gunpowder Plot, not Guy Fawkes – there were 13 people involved.

7. The job Guy Fawkes had in the Gunpowder Plot was to guard the 36 barrels of gunpowder that had been stored in a basement underneath the House of Lords.

8. Guy Fawkes was arrested in the basement on the day he was going to light the gunpowder, 5 November, and he was taken to the Tower of London.

9. King James I decreed that 5 November should be the day that people always celebrate that the Gunpowder Plot didn’t happen.

10. On Bonfire Night, grown-ups set off fireworks, light bonfires, and sometimes burn a doll that looks like Guy Fawkes.

Gardening Tips for October

There's always something to do in the garden in November when the weather allows it. Even now, leaves are falling rapidly and wind and rain are on the increase, though as I write, we are promised unseasonal warm temperatures for the weekend. Looking ahead, remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies of both well topped up.

Here then are some jobs to be getting on with in November.

1] If you can, wait until the first frosts before lifting parsnips when their flavour will have sweetened.

2] Empty and use contents of compost bins, using only the well-rotted dark, crumbly material. Perhaps use it to improve heavy soil before planting autumn garlic.

3] Ensure brassicas are netted against hungry pigeons. Cabbage white caterpillar damage is no longer a threat so fleece is not necessary. With top-heavy brassicas, you can either stake them or draw up some soil around the base of the stem to prevent wind rocking the plant and causing root damage.

4] Protect overwintering carrots by removing foliage and netting down a layer of straw as insulation.

5] It's a good idea to place a scaffold plank along the main access route into the plot to allow entry without compacting the soil as you walk across it.

6] Plant raspberry canes now, in well manured soil, for a delicious home grown crop next year. They should be planted 45-60 cm (18-24 inches) apart.

7] You can still sow broad beans; protect young plants with cloches in extended periods of frost and snow.

In conclusion a quote from Allan Armitage, a professor of horticulture at the University of Georgia:

Gardening simply does not allow one to be mentally old because too many hopes and dreams are yet to be realised.

NOTES OF THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 05 OCTOBER 2017

Cllr R Perham has resigned, there are now three vacancies on the Parish Council

Apologies were received from Cllr Spring and from Dist Cllr Jones Present: Cllrs Sherriff, Cooper, Edwards, and Bolland (Chairman)

Reports From Representatives On Outside Bodies Police Report: 2 thefts - one of a dog and one of copper wire; 2 incidents of anti-social behaviour – abusive phone call and male outside his lorry; 2 incidents of hare coursing; 1 concern for safety of youths playing in the road and 1 incident of a dog attacking chickens.

Dist Cllr Ashton reported: The Louth Livestock Market consultation result is to spend money on the existing premises. This recommendation will be put to Full Council for a final decision. Enquires will be made in planning regarding change of use for business premises.

County Cllr Bowkett reported: The Parish Council have received information about the Fairer Funding Deal for Lincolnshire. The A16 at Spilsby is closed between 6.00pm – 6.00amm the road will re-open at the end of October. Health & well-being are looking to recruit 26 new GP’s for Lincolnshire. LCC and ELDC are working together on a Hospital Housing Link to try and free up hospital beds.

Picnic Site There has been no update although LCC have been contacted again.

Planning Applications Received There were no planning applications for this meeting

Planning Decisions REFUSAL of consent to display an advertisement has been received for: S/169/00998/17 - Mrs M Mintram - Consent to display 1 non-illuminated, double sided, free standing sign at land adjoining World of Furnishings, Main Road.

An APPEAL has been made against the ELDC decision for: S/203/02501/16 - Mr D Nelson - Outline erection of 3 dwellings at Land adjacent to Holme Farm, West Fen

The Jubilee Committee Fund A Jumble Sale was held in the Youth Centre and the profits have been donated to the Jubilee Committee Fund as will the profits from the Horse Race Night. The Jubilee Committee fund is to be used for events or celebrations where the whole community is invited to attend. Funds can be used for fundraising events where the profits will be put back into the Jubilee Account. The Jubilee Funds are not for ‘bailing out’ any village events or celebrations that make a loss.

Cemetery A quote has been requested to level the paving at the entrance by the double gates. It was resolved to

ask for the quote to include a path to the tap from the hard standing area

The Parish Council are hoping to have some Christmas lights again this year, look out for details of the ‘switch on’ on the next magazine.

The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Thursday 02 November 2017 at 7.30pm in the Youth Centre, there will be a Public Forum from 7.15pm

A new venue to hold Parish Council meeting from 2018 is still being sought in Stickney. If a venue cannot be found the meetings will be held in a neighbouring village.

Mobile Library Visit

The mobile library visits Stickney on MONDAY’S at the Youth Centre, Hall Lane between 11.00am and 12 noon and at Horbling Lane between 12.15am and 12.45pm. The next visits will be 27 November and 22 January – no visit in December.
