From the Desk of Father Steve: Seeing God in Everyday Life: Death and Resurrection

“This is something amazing and unheard of! It was not we who actually died, were buried and rose

again. We only did these things symbolically through baptism, but we have been saved in actual fact. It

is Christ who was crucified, who was buried and who rose again, and all this has been attributed to us.

We share in his sufferings symbolically and gain salvation in reality. What boundless love for men!

Christ’s undefiled hands were pierced by the nails; he suffered the pain. I experience no pain, no

anguish, yet by the share that I have in his sufferings he freely grants me salvation.”

-St. Cyril of Jerusalem (d. 386)

HAPPY EASTER! The day of Resurrection has dawned upon us, and we rejoice in the light of Jesus Christ’s victory over the grave! Jesus Christ is risen: He is risen indeed, Alleluia! Though beaten and scourged, crowned with thorns and nailed to a wooden cross, hung on a cross and pierced by a spear, killed, buried, and left for dead, our Lord is not dead, He is alive, for He has risen victorious from the dead, and in doing so, has Himself trampled the power of sin and death underfoot, nailing our sinfulness to his blessed cross, and opening the gates of Heaven to us through his resurrection. Praised be Jesus Christ, now and forever! Amen! My friends, this most holy event of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we have remembered and celebrated these last three days is the most important moment in the history of the human race. It is the moment when our God has saved us, liberated us from our own sinfulness, set us free from slavery to evil and corruption, and rescued us from the road to Hell that we all were traveling on due to our sins, and set us back on the road to Heaven. This most holy celebration proves that it is through sacrificial love, through laying down one’s life, that new life bursts forth, that healing occurs, that redemption is won. By dying, Jesus destroyed our inevitable future of eternal punishment in Hell, and by rising from the dead, Jesus restored to us the possibility of living forever with Him in the new life of Heaven. This celebration of the Sacred Paschal Triduum- Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday- is the core of who we are, because it has made us into what we were always meant to be: God’s own sons and daughters, set free from sin to live forever in God’s glorious friendship in Heaven. Through death, the death of Christ, life springs forth. And you know, when you think about it, you can see evidence of this everywhere in the world around us. All around us, within us, in our experience of life, we can see how God’s plan to redeem us through the death and resurrection of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ is imprinted and symbolized throughout creation. For example, the sun rises brilliantly to usher in a new day only after having passed beneath the earth in darkness. The garden seed seemingly dried up and dead must be planted in the ground in order that new life and new growth may spring forth. Through the suffering and self-sacrificial love of a mother who endures the pain of labor, the new life of her child springs forth. And we see this transformation from suffering and death to the glory of new life not just in the natural world around us, but it is a theme which dominates our spiritual life as well. In baptism, we die to our old life of sin, and through the holy water of the baptismal font, are brought into a new life of holiness and grace. In Holy Communion, the grain and the grapes are crushed to form the bread and the wine that will eventually become the gift of Eternal Life: the Sacred Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist, Who will give new life to the souls who receive Him. In the sacrament of confession, we die to ourselves by humbling ourselves and confessing our sins to the Lord through the ministry of the priest, and by doing so, we are raised to the new life of grace, mercy and forgiveness that comes with being absolved. On their wedding day, husband and wife vow to die to themselves and their own wants and desires, and put the needs of their future spouse first, so that the two may become one, and start a new life together as one in the Lord. And finally, the man who is to be ordained to the priesthood lays down his own life, dying to self (which is symbolized most poignantly by the candidates laying prostrate on the Cathedral floor), in order that he may become an instrument of the new life of grace and salvation to the people that God will entrust to his care. Everywhere, brothers and sisters, we see the imprint of God’s plan- through suffering and death, new life is born. Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again, so that when we die, we might not suffer eternal punishment, but might be raised to new life with Christ. Happy Easter! ~ Fr. Steve

Don’t miss Camp Survive! This one week camp

(Aug. 5 - 9) is the best camp you will ever attend! Last

year this camp filled within hours of registration being

open, so you have to be ready as soon as it opens at

11:00 AM on April 25th. Full details on our parish

website.

Upcoming Cards for a Cause Fundraiser

In order to help raise money for our current building

project, we will be running a Cards for a Cause

fundraiser from April 21 to May 19. This fundraiser

consists of boxes of 30 greeting cards with matching

envelopes, in a sturdy box, for $30. Think dollar store

price with Hallmark quality! This fundraiser will

directly give the church $13/box. There are 5 choices to

choose from. Our goal is for each family to purchase

or sell at least 3 boxes. Full details and order forms are

on an insert in this bulletin and in the entrance of the

church. If you have questions, contact Jess Breden

(218) 348-0603.

Pasty Sales

Our next batch of pasties will be made the first week

of May. Please join in the fun of making them as we

continue to improve our pasties and methods so this

can become a perfected, regular fundraiser. Orders for

pasties will be taken next weekend and limited to 250.

Cassi’s Corner

I keep thinking of the importance of community.

Not just for the joy of fellowship but for the bolstering

of our faith. Let’s face it, we are often the lone soul

speaking the truth in the face of being called names

and the object of angry outbursts. That is, if we are

brave enough to even speak out. I attended a talk on

the virtue of courage by Dr. Peter Kreeft, a well-

known Catholic author and philosopher. Hearing his

talk had a two-fold affect on me: a conviction that I

often avoid, instead of defend, the truth and a bolster-

ing of my will towards being courageous. What if I

hadn’t gone to this talk, though? How would I have

experienced these good effects? This is why we need

to be in a community of believers!

I have been blessed to have been surrounded by

faithful Catholic friends throughout most of my adult

life. These friends have inspired me and taught me so

much about the faith. They have also supported me

when I’ve had to face situations that were against my

beliefs but are the norm in our world: partners mov-

ing in together before marriage, same-sex “marriage,”

new terms for “gender identity,” etc. This can feel like

a lonely minefield if not for others that can help me

keep a clear vision and hold me accountable for my

actions. I’ve needed a community of Catholics in

smaller things too: attending Mass every week and

on holy days, fasting, finding joy in each of the

celebrations of the liturgical year, participating in

activities at a parish, etc.

Jesus was abandoned by His friends and followers

during the passion, but we need each other. Let’s

renew/resolve to intentionally get more connected as

a community of believers.
