Important Parish Town Hall Meeting Please attend this important meeting this Wednesday, December 6, at 6:30 pm in the parish hall. Fr. Steve will go over the proposed plan for replacing the entrance wall in greater detail. Because of the complex work involved, the bid was higher than originally planned, and we will also be discussing fundraising efforts. Fr. Steve asks all parishioners to please plan to attend this meeting. It is vitally important that everyone be involved in this effort.

Bible Study Join us this Sunday, December 3 at 6:30 pm in the Parish Hall as we start our new study, Prayer: Finding Intimacy with God. The Bible Study Group meets Sunday evenings, 6:30 - 8 pm. New members are always welcome. Though prayer is one of the essentials of a thriving faith, we often feel as if we’re talking to ourselves—or, worse, as if we’re talking to no one at all. How can something so vital to the Faith be so elusive? Dr. Tim Gray masterfully uses the discipline of Lectio Divina to show you how to make prayer an effective effort of love and intimacy. In six video sessions, Prayer: Finding Intimacy with God captures the secret to opening our hearts and minds to Scripture as the means to hear from God and then respond in conversation, basking in his presence and resolving to live in and through his love.

Pancake Breakfast & Annual Bake Sale The Knights of Columbus will serve their famous pancake breakfast after Mass on Sunday, December 10. The Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary will host their annual bake sale during the pancake breakfast.

St. Mary’s Prayer Shawl Ministry We will meet on Wednesday, December 13 at 1 pm in the Community Room at Silverpointe Apt. We welcome new members. Knit/crochet/goodies. If you have questions,

contact Lana at 353-7714.

2018 Giving Envelopes & 2018 Calendars Please pick up your envelopes at the back of the church. If you don’t find your name and would like envelopes, please contact the parish office. Also, the 2018 calendars are on the table, please help yourself.

Old Red Hymnals Parishioners may take home an old red hymnal, they are at back of the church for your convenience. Because of copyright laws, these can only be for personal use.

Thank You from the Knights of Columbus We would like to thank everyone who participated or donated in any way to our annual Turkey Bingo.

Family Faith Formation

We will meet next on Wednesday, December 6 at 6 pm. We’ll start our night with dinner at 6 pm, followed by classes at 6:30 pm. For our Adult Faith Formation time, Father Steve scheduled a parish town hall meeting to discuss the construction & fundraising efforts for the front entry wall of the church. He planned the meeting during Adult Faith Formation so all parents could be there. There is child care available for those who have children younger

than kindergarten.

Poinsettias

Again this year we will buy our Christmas flowers locally, which were also locally grown at Anderson’s Greenhouse in Two Harbors. You can purchase a poinsettia for St. Mary’s Church in memory of a loved one. The cost is $13. Please use a “flower envelope” so we have all the correct information for the Christmas Bulletin. If you have any questions, please call the Parish Office for more details.

The Knights of Columbus Christmas Party

The party will be Thursday, December 14, in the Parish Hall at 5 pm. Bring a dish to share and an inexpensive gift for the dice game.

Music Ministers

For any of you wishing more practice for the Heritage Mass parts, I will be available for the next few Sundays after the 8:30 am Mass. Thanks, Lana

Fr. Steve’s Prayer for Consideration: Opening Prayer for the 1st Sunday of Advent

“Grant your faithful, we pray, Almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous

deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly

Kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ...”

As we may know, with the First Sunday of Advent this weekend begins a new Church year. And, it is also a great opportunity for me to change the subject matter for my bulletin articles. As you recall, my first year here as your pastor, I wrote a series of articles called, “Fr. Steve’s Quotes for Consideration,” in which I shared a quote from a saint and expounded upon it. This past year, I wrote a series called, “Fr. Steve’s Church Teaching for Consideration,” in which I discussed different teachings

of our faith. I would like to shift gears now for this new Church year and run a series of bulletin articles entitled, “Fr. Steve’s Prayer for Consideration.” My plan is to take the opening prayer, known as the “collect,” from the current weekend’s Sunday Mass and pull it apart, piece by piece, and offer something of a meditation or things to ponder about what that prayer means and what it is saying.

Now, my hope is that doing this will provide a source of meditation for you, the parishioners, to reflect upon during the upcoming week. As you are aware, the prayers at Mass in the “big red book,” called the Roman Missal, that the priest prays are not of his choosing or making: they are the same prayers heard around the world in all Catholic Churches that particular weekend. But, sometimes, we may not catch all the beauty and impact of a particular opening prayer at Mass for a whole host of reasons- perhaps we are distracted at the moment of the opening prayer, or our kids are crying, or the language is a bit too poetic to take in all at once. Thus my hope is that by providing a bulletin article in which we walk through the opening prayer, it will help to open up to us the beauty of the composed prayers of the Mass. So, a brief reflection on this weekend’s opening prayer for the First Sunday of Advent. Remember, at this moment, the priest is praying to God the Father on your behalf, as your representative. The opening prayer, which from here on out I will be calling the “collect,” is meant to do exactly that: it gathers together, or “collects” the hearts and minds of the people gathered for Mass and unites them in a common prayer to the Father, spoken by the priest. Typically, the collect reflects in its subject matter the particular season or time of year that the Church is celebrating. Thus, with the collect printed above: notice a few important features. First, the prayer reminds us right away about an important principle regarding Advent: during the season of Advent, we remember and prepare for the Lord Jesus’ coming as a baby in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. But, we also are reminded during Advent to make sure that we are spiritually ready and prepared for Jesus Christ’s Second Coming, when He will return to earth to judge all the living and the dead. And notice something really quite neat: remember last weekend’s Gospel reading for the Feast of Christ the King? It was the Gospel story in which Jesus described His Second Coming and the Last Judgment. Listen to the connection between that Gospel reading and this weekend’s opening prayer- we pray that we may meet the Lord Jesus with “righteous deeds” at his coming (“coming” here refers primarily to his Second Coming). Remember that the people whom Jesus welcomed to Heaven in last weekend’s Gospel had carried out good works of feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, etc? Then the prayer says, “so that gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly kingdom.” Remember that in the Gospel last weekend, the persons who were judged worthy to enter into Heaven were placed at Jesus’ right side, while those going to hell were at Jesus’ left side? In sum, the priest is praying for you, brothers and sisters, that you may be saved: “that they may be worthy to possess the heavenly Kingdom.” That’s what Advent, and what our entire faith is all about- salvation! God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

Holy Spirit, Two Harbors

From the Desk of Fr. Steve: I wish to formally offer my thanks as Pastor to several of our

parishioners who volunteered hours of their free time to help

organize, plan and execute our recent photo shoot for our new

parish directory: Gina Lemke, Kristine Underdale, Jennifer

Johnson as well as many other volunteers. When you see them

next, please thank them for their generous service to our parish!

Parish News: Retirement Fund for Religious: Please support next week’s

collection and give to those who have given a lifetime. Your gift

to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide nursing

care, medications, and other necessities. Please be generous.

Prayer Shawl Ministry: Prayer shawls and lap robes are made

in prayer by volunteers to be given to someone with a

prolonged or serious illness, in hospice, as a comfort after a loss

of a loved one or in times of stress. If you know someone who could

benefit from a prayer shawl or would like more information,

please call Liz Scheidt at 834-6492 or Linda Hoffman at

830-0605. The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets on the second

Tuesday of each month at 9 am. New people are always

welcome to join.

Parish Envelopes: Your assigned packet of envelopes is

available at the back of Church for the coming year. Envelope

usage is very important as it helps support intentional steward-

ship by everyone. We urge you to use your envelopes, it makes

our record keeping much easier when you do. If you need

envelopes, please let us know.

Advent Booklets, Calendars:

Please pick up your copies in the Church entryway.

Coming Home Basket: The basket located in the vestibule

(Church entrance) on the right side is a “Coming Home

Basket.” Anyone who knows of someone who has drifted away

from their Catholic faith is encouraged to write the name of the

person on a sheet of paper located in front of the basket and

place the paper inside the basket. As a faith community we are

encouraged to pray for the people whose names have been

placed in the Coming Home Basket as well as to encourage

those who have drifted away to return.

them to the church no later than Friday, December 22nd. Thank

you for your help in providing Christmas flowers.

in prayer.

UCA Update:

Please Note: As of today, our parish has currently collected

$23,180.43 towards our UCA goal of $25,667.93. We still

need to collect $2,487.50 by December 31st to meet our

parish goal. Please remember that all UCA monies go

directly to assist our diocese in its many programs which

directly benefit our parish. Please also remember that if we

do not meet our goal, we will have to make up the rest of

the monies from our general parish funds. Thank you!
