Steve Ryan
A high achieving senior manager with hands on experience in the competitive
food retail sector is available to take on a fresh challenge. A career in food has
seen Steve Ryan expend his energy and skills with only two fmcg retailers
which is testimony to his loyalty and the value placed on him by his employer.

galvanise how to get all store teams on board.

People Promoter – actively developed & evolved members of the stores team from
all levels to ensure career progression & optimum performance. Developed and
delivered training days to get 54 of his store colleagues through to the position of
duty manager.
Innovator – piloted a number of new roles and initiatives on the area prior to roll out
across the company including “Community Champions”; ”Duty Managers”; ”Service
Coaches”; “Compliance Coaches”.
Customer Service Champion – the area under Steve’s management consistently was
judged to be a ‘5 star’ achiever, the highest measure of customer service &
satisfaction within the Morrisons group.
Trouble Shooter – selected to join the senior management team of a store which
was high turnover but massively problematic with issues of absenteeism / poor
standards / hygiene issues / high staff turnover / zero development, coaching and
engagement of team in store. In the time Steve Ryan was in the store it won the
coveted “Grocer 33” and 5 of Steve’s team are now Store General Managers within
the Morrisons estate.
Fundraiser – personally led a team of senior managers on two long distance bike
rides to fundraise on behalf of company nominated charity. An opportunity not only
to raise funds for the charity but to engage/challenge/cajole a high performing team
in store to achieve the same outside the store.
Skills Holder – competent and capable in recruitment, managing people,
departmental management, cafe operations, petrol station operations, checkout
protocols, back office tasks, customer service. Obviously well versed in the “Market
Street” concept as operated by Morrisons comprising fish / salad bar / deli / cake
shop / bakery / meat departments.
Challenge Embracer - Involved in disciplinary actions at all levels including dismissal.
Involved in opening brand new stores from accepting responsibility for the empty
shell through all stages of implementation to launch day and beyond. Cradle to grave
experience has also seen Steve managing store closures including counselling and
mitigating the impact upon departing colleagues.
Work Experience
1995 to 2016 Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc, Bradford
2011 to 2016 Regional Operations Manager, East of England Note: from 2011 to 2015, the title of the post was Area Manager. The post reports to an operational director
and member of a management board which, in turn, reports to the executive board.
Responsible and accountable for all aspects of the day to day running and strategic direction
of 28 stores in the Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire, Cambridgeshire area.The area ran from
Cambourne/Cambridge to Scarborough. Against a backdrop of a weekly turnover exceeding
£17m, postholder managed & developed KPI’s and ensured compliance with all aspects of
company procedure & protocol.
Within the ‘league table’ of operating areas / regions, this region was a premier performer
consistently in the upper reaches of the table and was often cited by the company as an
exemplary contributor to the overall trading fortunes and brand enhancement of the
company.
Over and above the stores within the area, the postholder had direct relationships with
distribution centres, head office functions and compliance instruments.
During tenure, the company opened 8 new stores in the area ranging from 7000 sq ft to
40000 sq ft with the postholder being the driver to achieve the timetable and definitive
profile of the store in each instance.
2009 to 2011 Store General Manager, Swadlincote, South Derbyshire Note: the post reported to the Area Manager.
Responsible for the day to day running of this supermarket outlet which was a new addition
to the Morrisons network of stores. Quickly established the store in the area as the
supermarket of choice for the local community with the result being that J Sainsburys chose
to invest in a major store upgrade in a bid to compete and other smaller chains closed their
operations.
2007 to 2009 Deputy General Manager, Holyhead Rd, Coventry
Whilst in post was given extraneous duties and responsibilities as a member of the induction
team working to integrate Safeway stores and staff into the Morrisons practices, protocols
and culture.
2003 to 2007 Deputy General Manager, Binley, Coventry Note: the post reported to the Store General Manager
This store was one of the largest outlets in terms of turnover in the Morrisons group at that
time however it was rife with operational problems. The postholder was awarded the post
as a direct result of a reputation for a strong, motivational management style. Significant
improvements were recorded during his tenure.
2000 to 2003 Assistant Deputy Manager, Burton on Trent Note: the post reported to the Deputy General Manager
During the course of this tenure, the postholder was cited by the company for stopping an
armed robbery at the store.
1995 to 2000 Departmental Manager, Derby Note: the post reported to the Deputy General Manager
Held responsibility for a number of departments within the store during tenure.
1985 to 1995 Kwiksave
Held a number of store management roles and a training role which involved travelling
across the country delivering training packages to employees.
1983 to 1985 NAAFI
Held the post of Retail Assistant with the Armed Forces retailer in Germany.
