How to Recite the Chaplet

The Chaplet of Mercy is recited using ordinary rosary beads of five decades. The Chap-let is preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer.

1. Make the Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

2. Optional Opening Prayer: You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed

forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. (Repeat three times) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mer-cy for us, I trust in You!

3. The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy

kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.

4. Hail Mary: Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou

amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.

5. The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ,

His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He as-cended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

6. The Eternal Father: Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved

Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. 7. On the 10 Small Beads of Each Decade: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. 8. Repeat for the remaining decades Saying the "Eternal Father" ~ on the "Our Father" bead and then 10 "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion" ~ each of the "Hail Mary" beads. 9. Conclude with Holy God (Repeat three times) Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. 10. Optional Closing Prayer: Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion — inex-

haustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

[April 5, 2020] Palm Sunday ~ The Passion of the Lord

By: Deacon Mark Van Hook In a manner of speaking, reflecting on the Gospel’s passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, is like entering into the experience of those in the first century who were witnesses of this overwhelming experience. The Passion challenges us to walk with Jesus on the journey through the darkest hour of His life. Jesus had joyously entered into Jerusalem, people were cheering, waiving palms and there was Jesus riding on a lowly donkey to show that He was no warrior king but a servant. A Messiah who would save His people not by war but by the giving of Himself. As the Passover feast drew near Jesus knew that dark forces were conspiring against Him and what He faced. The spectacular nature of His healings and exorcisms had given way to the stark reality that He would be beaten and crucified. In the face of this threat, He didn't fade away into obscurity or retract His teaching in order to live an easy life. Instead, Jesus humbled himself and was obedient even to death. Jesus' hour had come and it was time for Him to pass through the dark valley alone before He could come to glory. Jesus was clearly innocent of the charges against him. What was going on was a strug-gle of the forces of darkness against the power of light. Reflecting on the torture that Jesus endured is uncomfortable. But there is something about the Passion that should make us equally uncomfortable. That is the reversal of attitude by those who were close to Jesus, the disciples, call them the insiders. When the Jewish leaders began to threaten Jesus and the Passion was imminent, the insiders became outsiders. Yet, those who had been the outsiders are the ones who helped and attended to Jesus in His suffering. Outsiders like Simon of Cyrene who carried Jesus' cross, the Roman centurion who recognized Him truly as the Son of God and Joseph of Arimathea who cared for Jesus' body.

The Passion challenges us on many levels. In our modern times, it almost seems like the way of the cross is absurd but it’s not that dis-tant from the experiences of our world today. As we enter into Holy Week it's the time to pick up our crosses and be one with the Lord who humbled himself to share in our humanity. The Passion of Jesus Christ is at the very heart of our faith and by reflecting upon this great gift our lives will be transformed.

En una forma de hablar, reflexionar sobre la Pasión del Evangelio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, es como entrar en la experiencia de aquellos en el primer siglo que fueron testigos de esta abrumadora experiencia. La Pasión nos reta a caminar con Jesús en el viaje a través de la hora más oscura de su vida. Jesús había entrado alegremente en Jerusalén, la gente estaba vi-toreando, renunciando a las palmas y allí estaba Jesús montado en un burro humilde para demostrar que no era un rey guerrero sino un sirviente. Un Mesías que salvaría a su pueblo no por la guerra sino por la entrega de sí mismo. Cuando se acercaba la fiesta de la Pascua, Jesús sabía que las fuer-zas oscuras estaban conspirando contra Él y lo que enfrentaba. La naturaleza espectacular de sus curaciones y exorcismos había dado paso a la cruda realidad de que sería golpeado y crucificado. Ante esta amenaza, no se desvaneció en la oscuridad ni retiró su ense-ñanza para vivir una vida fácil. En cambio, Jesús se humilló y fue obediente hasta la muerte. La hora de Jesús había llegado y era hora de que Él pasara solo por el valle oscuro antes de poder llegar a la gloria. Jesús era claramente inocente de los cargos en su contra. Lo que estaba sucediendo era una lucha de las fuerzas de la oscuridad contra el poder de la luz. Reflexionar sobre la tortura que Jesús sufrió es incómodo. Cuando los líderes judíos comenzaron a amenazar a Jesús y la Pasión era inmi-nente, los de adentro se convirtieron en forasteros. Sin embargo, aquellos que habían sido extraños son los que ayudaron y atendieron a Jesús en su sufrimiento. Extraños como Simón de Cirene, que llevaba la cruz de Jesús, el centurión romano que lo reconoció verdaderamente como el Hijo de Dios y José de Arimatea, que se preocupaba por el cuerpo de Jesús. La Pasión nos desafía en muchos niveles. En nuestros tiempos modernos, casi parece que el camino de la cruz es absurdo, pero no está tan lejos de las experiencias de nuestro mundo actual. [April 6, 2020: Monday of Holy Week] By: Deacon Mike Turner

Imagine yourself reclining at table with Jesus and His disciples. You hear the buzz of conversations around you, but suddenly a beautiful fragrance fills the air. You look over and Mary, sister of Lazarus and Martha, is pouring out an entire jar of expensive perfumed oil onto Jesus. Seeing this extravagant act, Judas becomes indignant, what a waste he says. Mary, you notice, ignores the harsh words and criti-cism and continues to minister to Jesus. He comes to her defense and tells them, “Leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

She has done a kind and compassionate thing for Him. It is her ac-tion; it is what she did for Jesus that she is remembered. Unknowing to her, she has prepared Him for burial. She poured out a fragrant sacrifice to the One who would become, on the Cross, a fragrant sacrifice for us. It’s a reminder to us, whatever we do in the name of Jesus, every small simple act of kindness, even if it may seem insig-nificant at the time, can be memorable. It is our action, it is what we do, it is what we say, that is important. Nothing mattered to Mary but the One who was before her.

There is a story of a young altar boy serving with the Bishop at Sun-day Mass. During Mass, he slipped and dropped the wine cruet. The sound of the bulb-shaped container bouncing across the hard surface echoed off the high walls and arched ceilings. Years later, the now grown altar boy quipped: “There is no atomic explosion that can equal in intensity of decibels and explosive force that can equal the sound of a wine cruet hitting the marble floor of a cathedral in the presence of a Bishop.”

Expecting a stern tongue lashing, the young man braced for his pun-ishment. But the Bishop was thoughtful instead. After Mass, he asked, “Young man, where do you plan on going to school when you get big?” “Why Spalding Academy of course,” he said. “No,” the Bishop said, “Tell your mother that I said when you get big you will go to Leuven (University) and someday you will be just as I am.”

The Bishop of this story was Archbishop Spalding and the young man came to known to us as Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Now, Archbish-op Spalding could have given young Sheen the tongue lashing he was expecting, yet instead he chose a small simple act of kindness and compassion that not only changed a life, but had a ripple effect around the world that is felt to this day.

We never know; so let us be kind to one another.

May God continue to bless us and protect us; and may the intersession of our Blessed Mother Mary keep us safe.

Años más tarde, el monaguillo ahora de grande, bromeó: "No hay explosión atómica que pueda igualar en intensidad de decibelios y fuerza explosiva que pueda igualar el sonido de una vinagrera de vino golpeando el piso de mármo de una Catedral en presencia de un Obispo". Esperando un severo azote en la lengua, el joven se preparó para su castigo. Pero el obispo fue pensativo en su lugar. Después de la Misa, preguntó: "Joven, ¿dónde planeas ir a la escuela cuando seas grande?" "Por qué, pues a la Academia Spalding, por supuesto", dijo. “No”, dijo el Obispo, “dile a tu madre que yo dije que cuando seas grande irás a Lovaina (Universidad) y algún día serás igual que yo”. El Obispo de esta historia fue el Arzobispo Spalding y el joven llegó a ser conocido como el Arzobispo Fulton J. Sheen. Ahora, el Arzobispo Spalding podría haberle dado al joven Sheen el latigazo que espera-ba, pero en su lugar eligió un pequeño acto simple de amabilidad y compasión que no solo cambió una vida, sino que tuvo un efecto dominó en todo el mundo que se siente hoy en día.

[April 7, 2020] Tuesday of the Holy Week

Holy Week is most definitely a very sacred time of the year, for it is now that we will commemorate and remember the last week of Jesus' life on this earth. These are the days leading up to the great Easter Feast. The Lenten season of sacrifice and self-denial is about to come to an end, but this week is extremely important for all Chris-tians. The greatest focus of the week is the Passion (suffering) and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the events that led up to it. Todays Gospel (John 13:21-33, 36-38) finds Jesus reclining at table with his disciples. Up to this point Jesus has been teaching them, guiding them, pouring his love into them in countless ways. All of his life has been leading to this moment where he will give of himself completely. Jesus at this moment in the Gospel was deeply troubled and said, “Amen, amen I say to you, one of you will betray me.” Peter asked him who would betray him? Jesus approached Judas and with a morsel and few words sets in motion the salvation of the world. This is an appropriate time for us all to ask Jesus how we have be-trayed Him, His love and forgiveness. If we truly understand the pain that the Son of God endured for us then imagine the pain he is endur-ing for us now. He does not want suffering, especially those strug-gling today in unimaginable numbers. Because of our sins we contin-ue to drive nails into his cross. Because of being removed from our public lives Jesus must feel the heartbreak of abandonment just as He did on the cross. Because of our faith now more that ever we must know Jesus is with us. Jesus enters into our struggles and carries us in them. He gives us His strength and all we need, to do God’s will. Jesus never leaves us, though our own pride and sinfulness may move us away from Him. Through the graces of the sacraments we have his help and his goodness to transform us. May we always have the faith to live it. During this sacred Holy Week let us all make the time to remember the Passion of Jesus Christ, His willingness to fall three times to the Cross and then to climb upon it. Offering the greatest gift that the Father gave Him and us, His life, as a sacrifice for our salvation.

La Semana Santa es definitivamente una época muy sagrada del año, porque es ahora cuando conmemoraremos y recordaremos la última semana de la vida de Jesús en esta tierra. Estos son los días previos a la gran fiesta de Pascua. La temporada de Cuaresma de sacrificio y abnegación está a punto de terminar, pero esta semana es extremadamente importante para todos los Cristianos. El enfoque principal de la semana es la Pasión (sufrimiento) y la Resurrección de Jesucristo y los eventos que condujeron a ella.

El Evangelio de hoy de (San Juan 13: 21-33, 36-38) encuentra a Jesús recostado en la mesa con sus discípulos. Hasta este punto, Jesús les ha estado enseñando, guiándolos, derramando su amor en ellos de innumerables maneras. Toda su vida ha estado conduciendo a este momento en el que se entregará por completo. Jesús en este momento en el Evangelio estaba profundamente preocupado y dijo: "Amén, amén te digo, uno de ustedes me traicionará". ¿Pedro le preguntó quién lo traicionaría? Jesús se acercó a Judas y con un bocado y pocas palabras puso en marcha la salvación del mundo.

Este es un momento apropiado para que todos le preguntemos a Jesús cómo lo hemos traicionado, su amor y perdón. Si realmente comprendemos el dolor que el Hijo de Dios sufrió por nosotros, imagínense el dolor que está sufriendo por nosotros ahora. No quiere sufrir, especialmente aquellos que luchan hoy en números inimagina-bles. Debido a nuestros pecados, continuamos clavando clavos en su Cruz. Al ser eliminado de nuestras vidas públicas, Jesús debe sentir el desamor del abandono tal como lo hizo en la Cruz. Debido a nues-tra fe ahora más que nunca debemos saber que Jesús está con nosotros.

Jesús entra en nuestras luchas y nos lleva en ellas. Él nos da su fuerza y todo lo que necesitamos para hacer la voluntad de Dios. Jesús nunca nos deja, aunque nuestro propio orgullo y pecaminosid-ad pueden alejarnos de Él. A través de la gracia de los sacramentos tenemos su ayuda y su bondad para transformarnos. Que siempre tengamos la fe para vivirlo.

Durante esta sagrada Semana Santa, hagamos un tiempo para re-cordar la Pasión de Jesucristo, su voluntad de caer tres veces a la Cruz y luego subir a ella. Ofreciendo el mayor regalo que el Padre le dio a Él y a nosotros, Su vida, como sacrificio por nuestra salvación.

[April 8, 2020] Wednesday of the Holy Week By: Father Michael Baricuatro

This Holy Week the chosen Twelve figures prominently in the gospels. Today, when Jesus announces at the last supper that ‘one of you will betray me’, they all ask Jesus in turn, “Surely it is not I, Lord?” All of the disciples, except Judas, address Jesus as Lord. Judas who address Jesus as Rabbi will eventually betray him break-ing his heart. Yet, the other disciples will also abandon Jesus, and Peter will publicly deny him three times.

How many times in the gospels that the disciples often fall short of Jesus’ expectation calling them ‘men of little faith’. The disciples’ different response in the gospel stories reflect our own faith in Jesus and at times our failure to follow him ever more closely.

Our faith at times is strong and firm like John, the beloved

disciple who lays his head on Jesus’ chest. We can have those mo-ments of great intimacy with Jesus, of deep prayer and of passionate love for the Lord. We want to always hear his voice and feel his pres-ence like John who stands by his friend’s side at the foot of the cross with the Blessed Mother. Or, we can be like Peter, so pious and en-thusiastic saying, “Master, I will lay down my life for you”, but then at the sight of the cross runs away in fear. Problems, sickness and tribu-lations in life can easily stifle and discourage our faith in him. Or we can be like Judas, who give the Evil One a foothold in his heart, sink-ing into the darkness of sin and greed eventually rejecting Jesus. How could this happen? Probably Judas must have stopped convers-ing with Jesus in a personal way, as one trusting friend talks to anoth-er, heart-to-heart and it lead to his downfall.

If we are honest, we can be anyone of those disciples at

any point of our faith journey. If we are not serious in our relationship with Jesus we will deny and betray him in the course of our life. Yet the Good News this Holy Week – He still calls us to follow him, He still invite us as his friends to be at table with him and He still willingly lay down his life for each one of us. In the words of Saint Paul, “If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.” (2Tim 2:13) AMEN.

Esta Semana Santa, los Doce elegidos ocupan un lugar destacado en los evangelios. Hoy, cuando Jesús anuncia en la última cena que "uno de ustedes me traicionará", todos le preguntan a Jesús a su vez: "¿No soy yo, Señor?" Todos los discípulos, excepto Judas, se dirigen a Jesús como Señor. Judas que se dirigen a Jesús como Rabino eventualmente lo traicionarán rompiendo su corazón. Sin embargo, los otros discípulos también abandonarán a Jesús, y Pedro lo negará públicamente tres veces. Cuántas veces en los evangelios los discípulos a menudo no cumplen con la expectativa de Jesús de llamarlos "hombres de poca fe". Si somos honestos, podemos ser cualquiera de esos discípu-los en cualquier punto de nuestro viaje de fe. Si no somos serios en nuestra relación con Jesús, lo negaremos y traicionaremos en el

curso de nuestra vida. Sin embargo, las Buenas Nuevas de esta Semana Santa: todavía nos llama a seguirlo, todavía nos invita como amigos a estar a la mesa con él y todavía voluntariamen-te da su vida por cada uno de nosotros. [April 9, 2020] “THE BIRTH NIGHT”

Reflection on the Holy Thursday of the Lord’s Supper By: Fr. Mikel Estaris

Yesterday, a family from our parish community here at St. Rose of Lima Church handed me a new set of chasubles (vestments) as a gift

for my upcoming 10th year anniversary as a priest. Fr. Michael Baricuatro, Fr. Mauricio Hurtado, and I were ordained in the month of May 2010 for the Diocese of Sacramento. The generous act of this family is one of the many precious moments in my priestly life that reminds me of the “gift and mystery” of this vocation called, Ministerial Priesthood (Holy Orders). I was not worthy and still I am not worthy of this grace of a vocation. Christ alone is Worthy! Christ alone has made it and continues to make it possible for me and all of my brother priests to exercise our ministerial priesthood. We are only sharers in the One Holy Priesthood of Jesus Christ. In other words, my priesthood is not mine but of Christ.

How I wish I could tell you that after almost 10 years of priesthood, I know everything there is to know about what it means to be a priest! The bittersweet truth is I do not know everything there is to know about this vocation. This is because there is always something new to learn and to experience every waking moment in my priestly life. Perhaps the imagery I can use to share this point is the experience of those of you who have been married or are in relationships for many years. The number of years does not equate easily to the level of perfection on how to be a husband or a wife, a father or a mother in that vocation. We can only all hope that the time we spend, in whichever vocation we are called to re-spond, helps us to mature deeply in our mission, responsibilities, faith and love for God. Again, there is always something new, specifically and uniquely, revealed to us through, with, and in our individual vocations.

While my limited human condition does not allow me to have the absolute grasps of what it means to be a priest, the indelible being of Christ’s priesthood in me expresses something different. What do I mean by this? Even if sometimes (or a lot of times especia lly this time!), I would wake up grumpy and even not fully ready to face the day, the Priesthood of Christ in me is always ready, twenty-four seven, seven days a week. I was marked with the Priestly character of Christ, configured to him in a special way by the reception of the Sacrament of Ordination.

On this Holy Day known as the “HOLY THURSDAY OF THE LORD’S SUPPER,” we are all invited to celebrate and remember the “Holy Mo-ment” when the Eucharist and the Ministerial Priesthood were born together, intimately to form one unified reality. This was night when Christ, the High Priest, instituted the Eucharist at His Last Supper with His disciples. This is the Birth Night the Eucharist and those who were called to offer this sacrament through, with, and in the one High Priesthood of Christ! There is no Priesthood without the Eucharist! There is no Eucharist without the High Priesthood of Christ of whom and from whom Ordained Priests draw this sacred power. This is why this coronavirus lockdown brings such profound sadness for my brother priests and me. The Eucharist is the summit of all our liturgical worships and celebrations as Catholics. The Eucharist is the direct connection that we have to God because there He is in the Real Presence of His Son Jesus Christ. Without this Holy Sacra-ment, we are lost. I am a Priest because of the Eucharist. Thus, I ask you my sisters and brothers to pray for all of your priests, those who are in the active ministry, those who are retired, those who are sick, those who have died, those who have been dismissed, on leave of absence, or laicized, and even those who have caused deep misery to our Church because of the abuses. Just like you, we, as priests, are also humans and in need of Christ’s continuing redemption in our lives. While our humanity as priests does not (and should never) excuse us from not being ac-countable of our sins and errors; our humanity, however, shows us that we are as dependent to our God and in need of Him, just as everyone else. We are not mini-gods among the People of God. We are called to be Christ among His people. For us to remain holy and good priests, we need your presence in our lives through your prayers and other form of supports.

May this Holy Thursday unite us all as one family around the table in the Last Supper of Christ. To help you facilitate a deeper reflection this Holy Week on the Eucharist and the Ministerial Priesthood, here are some excerpts from a paper I wrote when I was in the seminary entitled “John Paul II’s understanding of Prayer at the Center of Priestly Existence.”

“The Ministerial Priesthood and the Church. The Church is the visible and sacramental sign of communion with God and unity among people. In Her, the whole mission of God’s people (including the Ministerial Priesthood) is constituted. She received the Eucharist from Christ, which builds Her up and creates a human community in Her (John Paul II, Holy Thursday Letter 2003). Like the Eucharist, the priest is also a gift from God to the Church for the sake of the Eucharist.

The Eucharist, like the priesthood, is a gift from God “which radically transcends the power of the assembly” and which the assembly “receives through episcopal succession going back to the Apostles” (Encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia, 29). The Second Vatican Council teaches that “the ministerial priest, by the sacred power that he enjoys ... effects the Eucharistic Sac-rifice in the person of Christ and offers it to God in the name of all the people” (Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium, 10). The assembly of the faithful, united in faith and in the Spirit and enriched by a variety of gifts, even though it is the place where Christ “is present in his Church, especially in her liturgical celebrations (Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium, 7), is not by itself able to celebrate the Eucharist or to provide the ordained minister. (John Paul II, Holy Thursday Letter 2004)

In addition, through the Church, the link between the Ministerial Priesthood and the Common Priesthood of the faithful is established.

The Ministerial Priesthood and the Eucharist. As previously mentioned, the Ministerial Priesthood is considered to be a gift to the Church for the sake of the Eucharist. The birth of the Ministerial Priesthood and the Eucharist on Holy Thursday already expressed the intimate relationship that exists between the two. The priest is called to administer the Eucharist for the whole community of believers. Without the Eucharist, there is no priest. JPII would say that the Eucharist is the very reason why priesthood came into being. He wrote,

All of us who, through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, enjoy a special ministerial sharing in the priesthood of Christ, on Holy Thursday concentrate our inner thoughts upon the memory of the institution of the Eucharist. For this event marks the begin-ning and source of everything that we are, by the grace of God, in the Church and the world. Holy Thursday is the birthday of our priesthood, and so is also our yearly feast day. (John Paul II, Holy Thursday Letter 1987)

The Eucharist, he added, is the holiest task of priests because it allows the redeeming reality of Christ to perpetuate in a sacramental manner.

[9 de Abril del 2020] “LA NOCHE DE NACIMIENTO”

Reflexión sobre el Jueves Santo de la Cena del Señor Por: P. Mikel Estaris

Ayer, una familia de nuestra comunidad parroquial aquí en la Iglesia de Santa Rosa de Lima me entregó un Nuevo conjunto de casullas

(vestimentas) como regalo para mi próximo décimo aniversario como sacerdote. El P. Michael Baricuatro, P. Mauricio Hurtado y yo fuimos or-denados en el mes de mayo del 2010 para la Diócesis de Sacramento. El acto generoso de esta familia es uno de los muchos momentos precio-sos en mi vida sacerdotal que me recuerda el “don y e misterio” de esta vocación lamada Sacerdocio Ministerial (Órdenes Sagradas). No era digno e esta gracia de vocación. ¡Solo Cristo es digno! Solo Cristo lo ha logrado y continua hacienda posble que yo y todos mis hermanos sacer-dotes ejerzan nuestro sacerdocio ministerial. Solo compartimos el Único Sacerdocio de Jesucristo. En otras palabras, mi sacerdocio no es mío sino de Cristo.

¡Cómo desearía poder decirte que después de casi 10 años de sacerdocio, sé todo lo que hay que saber sobre lo que significa ser sacer-dote! La agridulce verdad es que no sé todo lo que hay que saber sobre esta vocación. Esto se debe a que siempre hay algo nuevo que aprender y experimentar cada momento de vigilia en mi vida sacerdotal. Quizás las imágenes que puedo usar para compartir este punto es la experiencia de aquellos de ustedes que han estado casados o tienen relaciones durante muchos años. El número de años no equivale fácilmente al nivel de perfección sobre cómo ser un esposo o una esposa, un padre o una madre en esa vocación. Solo podemos esperar que el tiempo que pasamos, en cualquier vocación que estemos llamados a responder, nos ayude a madurar profundamente en nuestra misión, responsabilidades, fe y amor por Dios. Una vez más, siempre hay algo nuevo, específico y único, que se nos revela a través de, con y en nuestras vocaciones individuales.

Si bien mi limitada condición humana no me permite tener una comprensión absoluta de lo que significa ser sacerdote, el ser indeleble

del sacerdocio de Cristo en mí expresa algo diferente. ¿Qué quiero decir con esto? Incluso si a veces (¡o muchas veces, especialmente esta vez!), Me despertara malhumorado e incluso no completamente listo para enfrentar el día, el Sacerdocio de Cristo en mí siempre está listo, vein-ticuatro siete, siete días a la semana. Estaba marcado con el carácter sacerdotal de Cristo, configurado para él de manera especial por la recep-ción del Sacramento de la Ordenación.

En este Día Santo conocido como el "JUEVES SANTO DE LA CENA DEL SEÑOR", todos estamos invitados a celebrar y recordar el

"Momento Santo" cuando la Eucaristía y el Sacerdocio Ministerial nacieron juntos, íntimamente para formar una realidad unificada. Esta fue la noche cuando Cristo, el Sumo Sacerdote, instituyó la Eucaristía en su última cena con sus discípulos. ¡Esta es la Noche de Nacimiento, la Eu-caristía y aquellos que fueron llamados a ofrecer este sacramento a través, con y en el único Sumo Sacerdocio de Cristo! ¡No hay sacerdocio sin la Eucaristía! No hay Eucaristía sin el Sumo Sacerdocio de Cristo de quien y de quien los Sacerdotes ordenados obtienen este poder sagrado. Es por eso que este bloqueo de coronavirus trae una tristeza tan profunda para mis hermanos sacerdotes y para mí. La Eucaristía es la cumbre de todos nuestros cultos y celebraciones litúrgicas como católicos. La Eucaristía es la conexión directa que tenemos con Dios porque allí Él está en la Presencia Real de Su Hijo Jesucristo. Sin este Santo Sacramento, estamos perdidos. Soy Sacerdote por la Eucaristía. Por lo tanto, les pido a mis hermanas y hermanos que recen por todos sus sacerdotes, los que están en el ministerio activo, los que están jubilados, los que están enfer-mos, los que han muerto, los que han sido despedidos, con licencia o laicizados, e incluso aquellos que han causado una profunda miseria nuestra Iglesia debido a los abusos. Al igual que usted, nosotros, como sacerdotes, también somos humanos y necesitamos la continua re-dención de Cristo en nuestras vidas. Si bien nuestra humanidad como sacerdotes no (y nunca debería) disculparnos de no ser responsables de nuestros pecados y errores; nuestra humanidad, sin embargo, nos muestra que somos tan dependientes de nuestro Dios y que lo necesitamos, como todos los demás. No somos mini dioses entre el pueblo de Dios. Estamos llamados a ser Cristo entre su pueblo. Para que sigamos siend-santos y buenos sacerdotes, necesitamos su presencia en nuestras vidas a través de sus oraciones y otras formas de apoyo.

una reflexión más profunda esta Semana Santa sobre la Eucaristía y el Sacerdocio Ministerial, aquí hay algunos extractos de un artículo que escribí cuando estaba en el seminario titulado "La comprensión de Juan Pablo II de la Oración en el Centro de Existencia Sacerdotal".

“El sacerdocio ministerial y la Iglesia. La Iglesia es el signo visible y sacramental de la comunión con Dios y la unidad entre las per-sonas. En Ella se constituye toda la misión del pueblo de Dios (incluido el Sacerdocio Ministerial). Ella recibió la Eucaristía de Cristo, que la edifica y crea una comunidad humana en ella (Juan Pablo II, Carta del Jueves Santo 2003). Al igual que la Eucaristía, el sacer-dote también es un regalo de Dios a la Iglesia por el bien de la Eucaristía.

La Eucaristía, como el sacerdocio, es un don de Dios "que trasciende radicalmente el poder de la asamblea" y que la asam-blea "recibe a través de la sucesión episcopal volviendo a los Apóstoles" (Encíclica Ecclesia de Eucharistia, 29). El Concilio Vaticano II enseña que "el sacerdote ministerial, por el poder sagrado que disfruta ... efectúa el sacrificio eucarístico en la persona de Cristo y se lo ofrece a Dios en nombre de todo el pueblo" (Constitución dogmática Lumen Gentium, 10 ) La asam-blea de los fieles, unida en la fe y en el Espíritu y enriquecida por una variedad de dones, a pesar de que es el lugar donde Cristo "está presente en su Iglesia, especialmente en sus celebraciones litúrgicas (Constitución Sacrosanctum Concilium, 7), es no por sí solo capaz de celebrar la Eucaristía o de proveer al ministro ordenado. El Sacerdocio Ministerial y la Eucaristía. Como se mencionó anteriormente, el Sacerdocio Ministerial se considera un regalo a la Iglesia por el bien de la Eucaristía. El nacimiento del Sacerdocio Ministerial y la Eucaristía el Jueves Santo ya expresó la relación íntima que existe entre los dos. El sacerdote está llamado a administrar la Eucaristía para toda la comunidad de creyentes. Sin la Eucaristía, no hay sacerdote. JPII diría que la Eucaristía es la razón por la cual nació el sacerdocio. El escribio:

Todos los que, a través del Sacramento del Orden Sagrado, disfrutamos de una participación ministerial especial en el sacer-docio de Cristo, el Jueves Santo concentramos nuestros pensamientos internos en la memoria de la institución de la Eu-caristía. Porque este evento marca el comienzo y la fuente de todo lo que somos, por la gracia de Dios, en la Iglesia y en el mundo. El Jueves Santo es el cumpleaños de nuestro sacerdocio, y también lo es nuestro día de fiesta anual. (Juan Pablo II, Carta del Jueves Santo 1987)

La Eucaristía, agregó, es la tarea más sagrada de los sacerdotes porque permite que la realidad redentora de Cristo se perpetúe de manera sacramental.

[April 10, 2020] Good Friday

Reflecting on the Passion, doesn't it seem like maybe we could alter the violent events but retain the same glory that Jesus gave us? Maybe the crowd might choose Barabbas and Pilate wouldn't have to crucify Jesus. But that wasn't the plan. What we have to do is to embrace Jesus suf-fering, not deny it. Jesus was fully aware of what was to happen to Him, there were no surprises. He guided the events of the Passion from His arrest to crucifixion, having the first and the last word in every matter. The silence of the garden where Jesus and His disciples had gone was shattered by a large group of Roman soldiers and temple police carrying weapons and torches. But why did they need a small army to arrest a preacher who had no history of violence. We don't know the answer, but what we do know is that Jesus remained calm, in charge and knew what had to transpire. After being turned over by Judas, Jesus was taken to the Jewish leaders Annas and Caiaphas who had a singular vision, to get rid of Jesus no matter what it took. During Jesus’ interrogation, there were no charges of blasphemy and no question of His messianic status. Rather the ques-tions were about Jesus' disciples and teaching. Through the interrogation, Jesus was composed and certainly wasn’t intimidated. Then Jesus was taken to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate who wasn't pleased with being drug out of bed in the early morning to attend to a religious dispute. Why did the Jewish leaders take Jesus to Pilate? The answer is very simple, the Romans had the sole right to execute in lands they conquered. In bringing Jesus to Pilate, there was a problem. The Jewish leaders had no charges, no witnesses against Jesus. All they had was a claim that Jesus must be a criminal or why else would they accuse Him? A debate began between Jesus and the Roman governor about the nature of kingship, something Pilate didn't understand. The debate was about the one who rules heaven and earth, not a king with the trappings of royalty. With Jesus having no guilt, Pilate had no interest in convicting Jesus. Pilate wanted to wash his hands of the situation and release Jesus, but the Jewish leaders pressured him, threatening to report him to Caesar. Thinking that a Jewish Passover custom might resolve the situation favorably for Jesus, Pilate offered the release of a prisoner putting the decision in the hands of crowd. But things didn't work out as Pilate expected, Je-sus was turned over to be crucified. Remarkably through it all, Jesus remained composed and in control to the cross. Despite objections from the religious authorities, at the cross Pilate formally declared Jesus the "King of the Jews". A statement written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin meant as a testament for the whole world to see. Jesus' last words on the cross showed that He was in control of events even as He accepted death. Determined that His time had come without a cry of abonnement or pain, Jesus’ last words "it is finished" shows us that He came to do a job and it had been done. A testament that Jesus did something that no other person on earth could ever do, He alone carried out God’s purpose to us to give us fullness of God’s own life.

Reflexionando sobre la Pasión, ¿no parece que tal vez podríamos alterar los eventos violentos pero retener la misma gloria que Jesús nos dio? Quizás la multitud podría elegir a Barrabás y Pilato no tendría que crucificar a Jesús. Pero ese no era el plan. Lo que tenemos que hacer es abrazar el sufrimiento de Jesús, no negarlo. Jesús estaba completamente consciente de lo que le iba a pasar, no hubo sorpresas. Guió los even-tos de la Pasión desde su arresto hasta la crucifixión, teniendo la primera y la última palabra en cada asunto. El silencio del jardín donde habían ido Jesús y sus discípulos fue destrozado por un gran grupo de soldados Romanos y policías del templo que llevaban armas y antorchas. Pero, ¿por qué necesitaban un pequeño ejército para arrestar a un predicador que no tenía antecedentes de violen-cia? No sabemos la respuesta, pero lo que sí sabemos es que Jesús permaneció tranquilo, a cargo y sabía lo que tenía que suceder. Después de ser entregado por Judas, Jesús fue llevado a los líderes judíos Anás y Caifás, quienes tenían una visión singular, para deshacerse de Jesús sin importar lo que fuera necesario. Durante el interrogatorio de Jesús, no hubo acusaciones de blasfemia y no se cuestionó su estado mesiánico. Más bien las preguntas eran sobre los discípulos y la enseñanza de Jesús. A través del interrogatorio, Jesús se compuso y cierta-mente no fue intimidado. Luego, Jesús fue llevado al gobernador Romano Poncio Pilato, a quien no le gustó salir de la cama temprano en la mañana para atender una disputa religiosa. ¿Por qué los líderes judíos llevaron a Jesús a Pilato? La respuesta es muy simple, los Romanos tenían el derecho exclusivo de ejecutar en las tierras que conquistaron. Al traer a Jesús a Pilato, hubo un problema. Los líderes judíos no tenían cargos, ni testigos contra Jesús. Todo lo que tenían era una afirmación de que Jesús debía ser un criminal o ¿por qué otra razón lo acusarían? Comenzó un debate entre Jesús y el gobernador Romano sobre la natu-raleza de su reinado, algo que Pilato no entendió. El debate fue sobre el que gobierna el cielo y la tierra, no un rey con las trampas de la realeza. Como Jesús no tenía culpa, Pilato no tenía interés en condenar a Jesús. Pilato quería lavarse las manos de la situación y liberar a Jesús, pero los líderes judíos lo presionaron, amenazando con denunciarlo al César. Pensando que una costumbre de la Pascua judía podría resolver la situación favorablemente para Jesús, Pilato ofreció la liberación de un prisionero que puso la decisión en manos de la multitud. Pero las cosas no funcionaron como Pilato esperaba, Jesús fue entregado para ser crucificado. Sorprendentemente, a pesar de todo, Jesús permaneció compuesto y en control de la cruz. A pesar de las ob-jeciones de las autoridades religiosas, en la Cruz Pilato declaró formalmente a Jesús el "Rey de los Judíos". LETTER TO MY FELLOW PRIESTS

The coronavirus has brought us a cross like no other in the cancellation of public Masses.

I feel heartbroken that I cannot celebrate Mass for my people—the students, faculty, staff, guests, and families that make up the Franciscan University communi-

ty. I, a priest, cannot give them Jesus in the Eucharist.

Certainly, I am praying for them, as I am sure you are praying for your parishioners. But I wanted to do something more. Something

visible. So, today, I hung BIG WHITE RIBBONS ON THE DOORS OF our Christ the King Chapel and Portiuncula Chapel on campus.

I did it to let anyone who sees them know that the friars and I are praying for them. That we miss them. And that God’s promise in

Isaiah 49:15 remains firm: “I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU.”

I invite you to place white ribbons of remembrance on the doors of your churches and chapels. And to tell your people why: Be-cause you are suffering along with them until the glorious day when you can gather together again to worship, hear the Word of

God proclaimed, and receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

Let’s make these WHITE RIBBONS A SIGN OF HOPE THROUGHOUT OUR CHURCH—and of our joyful welcome home to

our people when the Mass is restored.
