Not A Typical Customer
The Internet2/R&E community:– Has “infinite” IP bandwidth– Operates as a multi-platform, multi-user,
transitional user environment– “Gave birth” to the public Internet and is
intent on advancing global IP communication– Has the capability and the need to push
technology design and development

Why Multimedia over IP?
• Richness of form = Rich representation of ideas– Text/image/graphics/audio/video/animation/
simulation– Two-way conferencing, streaming, “on-demand”
• Promise of “interactivity” makes a compelling case – To interact with ideas, with humans, with machines
• Rich form and interactivity create challenges in:– Capturing, describing, and storing a “complete” asset– Protecting and determining authenticity– Granting and controlling access
