INDIGENOUS PROGRAMS

LET’S TALK RECONCILIATION FILM DIALOGUEJoin us for a screening of the National Film Board production titled “Six Miles Deep”.On February 28, 2006, members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy blockaded a highway near Caledonia, Ontario to prevent a housing development on land that falls within their traditional territories. The ensuing confrontation made national headlines for months. Less well-known is the crucial role of the clan mothers of the community who set the rules for conduct. When the community’s chiefs ask people to abandon the barricades, it is the clan mothers who overruled them, leading to a cultural reawakening in their traditionally matriarchal community.Following the screening, join us for a Reconciliation Dialogue facilitated by Karl Dockstader and Sean VanderKlis, hosts of the One Dish, One Mic podcast. The discussion will be recorded as a special podcast edition. For adults of all ages.Victoria Avenue LibraryWednesday, October 3rd6:00 p.m.No registration required.

BRIAN KON METIS DOT PAINTING EXHIBITThe Metis are known as the “flower beadwork people” for their elaborately decorated clothing and possessions.Brian is a rising visual artist from the Metis Community. His style of art is called Dot Art, which is a modern version of traditional beadwork created by Metis people. Each “bead” is applied as a single dot of paint to create the images in his art. Many of the designs in Brian’s paintings can be traced to beadwork found on historic clothing and possessions of Metis people. In addition to painting, Brian enjoys photography and sketching. He also makes traditional Metis clothing using materials and techniques once used by Metis fur traders in the 1700 and 1800’s. Samples of his works can be seen when Brian attends both traditional and non-traditional indigenous ceremonies.Proud of his indigenous heritage, Brian has also been involved with the Landscape of Nations (Canada’s largest monument to indigenous people, in recognition of their role in the War of 1812), and he was the Metis Ambassador on the advisory committee for Canada’s 150 celebration during the Celebration of Nations.
