…In 1932 a group of local retired seafarers and other interested personnel formed this club, naming it after a sailing ship. ‘The Thermopylae’, which was Victoria’s only registered full rigged tea clipper. The Thermopylae was 212 feed, built in 1868 in Aberdeen, Scotland by Hoods Shipbuilding, for the
Thompson’s Aberdeen White Star Line. From 1891-95 she was owned by Robert Redord Co. of Montreal and carried rice from the Orient to Victoria Rice and Flour Mill, which is now Capital Iron. In 1895 she sailed
out of Victoria with a load of lumber for Great Britain and ended her days as a Portuguese saild training ship, in 1907. The Thermopylae club meets once a month, second Wednesday at the Maritime Museum.
