operaandwasultimatelyrejectedinfavoroftheshorterFidelioOverture.One
usualelementisanoff-stagetrumpetfanfaremidwaythroughthework,which
representsthearrivaloftheGovernor,MinisterofJusticeandsoldiers.
ThepremierofBeethoven’siconicSymphonyNo.5occurredinlessthanideal
circumstances.Theoriginalconcertwasexceptionallylong,evenbythe
standardsoftheday,andwasjammedwithmanynewcompositionsincluding
SymphonyNo.6,theChoralFantasy,MassinCMajor,PianoConcertoNo.4and
evensolopianoimprovisationbythecomposerhimself.Withonlyone
rehearsal,theorchestrawasgrosslyunderpreparedandevenhadtostopand
restartthroughouttheevening.Tomakemattersworse,thetheaterwas
extremelycoldanduncomfortable,makingevenoneofBeethoven’sstrongest
supporters,PrinceLobkovitzremark,“Therewesatfrom6:30–10:30inthe
mostbittercold,andfoundfromexperiencethatonemighthavetoomuchofa
goodthing.”
Inspiteofanunsympatheticintroduction,SymphonyNo.5steadilygained
recognition.Onlyayearlater,poet,composerandmusiccriticE.T.A.Hoffman
praisedthework:"indescribablyprofound,magnificentsymphonyinCminor."
RomanticcomposerHectorBerlioz,describedthesymphony:"emanatesdirectly
andsolelyfromthegeniusofBeethoven.Itishisownintimatethoughtthatis
developed;andhissecretsorrows,hispent-uprage,hisdreamssofullof
melancholyoppression,hisnocturnalvisionsandhisburstsofenthusiasm
furnishitsentiresubject.”Theworkhascontinuedinunbrokenpopularity,
frequentlyusedtoinauguratesymphonyorchestras,asarepresentationof
AlliedvictoryinWWII,andeveninmodernpopularculture.Thefamousfour-
notemotifhascometorepresentthedramaandintensityoftheorchestral
symphonygenre.
ThepowerofSymphonyNo.5liesinitssimplicityandemotionalstruggle.The
dark,openingmovementinCminor,isleananddirect,beginningexclusively
withtheprominent4-notemotif,passedfrominstrumenttoinstrument.
Beethovenseemstoconstructtheentireworkonlyfromthisfragment.The
secondmovement,setasathemeandvariations,beginswithaninnocent
melodyinthecellosandviolas,onlytobeinterruptedagainbytheoriginalidea.
Eventhethirdmovement,amysteriousscherzo,quicklyfindsitselfovertakenby
areturntotheiconicmotto.
ItiswellknownthatBeethovenstruggledemotionallyduringthistimeoverhis
everincreasingdeafness,yetstatedinaletterthathewould"seizeFatebythe
throat;itshallnotbendorcrushmecompletely."Ithasnotbeendifficultto
relatesuchstatementsdirectlytohismusic,asSymphonyNo.5seems

Ryanbeganperformingprofessionallyatage17,andhassincebeenaguestartistat
concertsandfestivalsthroughouttheUnitedStates.HeattendedBYU-Idaho,Arizona
StateUniversity,andtheNewEnglandConservatoryofMusicforhisdegreesin
musiceducation,classicaltrumpetperformance,andjazzperformance,respectively.
WhileatASU,Nielsenstudiedwithrenownedtrumpetsoloist,DavidHickman,where
