SOAR Bi-Annual Newsletter

Cancer Prevention Month This month we remember to raise awareness for this devastating disease.

SOAR, or Students for Oncological Aid and Relief strives to bring joy and comfort to cancer patients and their families. During Cancer Prevention Month, we remember those we’ve

lost and those who are impacted, and we recall the reason we started this organization in the first place. Help us continue our mission on helping patients and their families on their

fight against cancer!

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO:

CHAPTERS

DeBakey High School Chapter Our DeBakey Chapter had a hoodie fundraiser:

The DeBakey High School SOAR Chapter designed a hoodie to sell and fundraise money for cancer patients. All profits that came from this fundraiser were donated to the American Cancer Society. There were two hoodie colors this year which appealed to a larger group of people. Our chapter members advertised the

hoodies both in and out of school. Money was also collected in the form of donations by members. A total of 148 hoodies were sold.

Cinco Ranch High School Chapter Cinco Ranch had socials to reach out to new members and raise money:

CRHS and Taylor High School partnered in a joint event at Panera Bread. 10% of the profits made from the social event was returned back to SOAR from Panera. A total of 30 members participated.

Cinco Ranch SOAR also had an ice cream social where members created bracelets and bonded with each other and their school club sponsor. 10 members participated.

Taylor High School Chapter Taylor High School held fundraising events and gave holiday cards to the local hospital:

Taylor, as before mentioned, partnered with Cinco Ranch in an effort to raise money. They also held a sweater sale where they sold sweaters to their local community to fundraise. Taylor SOAR members wrote cards to the local hospital staff and patients for the holidays to spread holiday cheer. They raised a total of $520.

Thank you to all of our chapters for working so hard this year!

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO:

EXECUTIVE BOARD

Mary Kay Chemo Kits SOAR was reached out to by the Mary Kay Foundation to distribute care packages:

In November, SOAR partnered with Mary Kay to put together and send out care packages to local hospitals. Kits included Mary Kay Cosmetic items such as chemo-safe body lotion, hand cream, and lip balm. 30 packages were put together and distributed by SOAR with the help of the Memorial High School Chapter. It was an honor to work with such a large cosmetic company, we hope to work with them again in the future.

Youth Creators’ Night Benefit Concert $15, 168.49 was raised at Crystal King’s headline concert in August:

This past summer, Crystal King put on a concert in West Houston Chinese Church which featured guest performers in an effort to raise money for SOAR. The total donations exceeded $15,000 to help support SOAR’s future philanthropy events and endeavors. Thank you to all the donors, performers, and attendees who helped bring together such a wonderful event with an amazing cause!

Hospital Staff Holiday Candygrams In December, executive board members put together candygrams for local hospital staff:

As an event, the board, with Tompkins High School Chapter, created notes to give to hospital staff. This was in effort to thank the hardworking staff during the busy holiday season for all that they do!

Welcome, Claire! SOAR Exec invites a new member, Claire Qu:

SOAR is making an effort to become more knowledgeable in cancer research to better cater towards patients and their families. In order to do this, we sent out an application for a medical liason, someone to help us with this field. Claire is a senior at Clements High School and is an experienced researcher at Rice University. She is passionate about learning more about cancer research. We’re so excited to work with her and expand our grounds into more than just patient relief!
