Escuela de Musica Sinfonica de Perez Zeledon The Symphonic Music School of Perez Zeledon ("Escuela de Musica Sinfonica de Perez Zeledon") was formed in 1994 at the National University, in order to provide our children and young people opportunities to develop their musical talent in a systematic, serious and professional manner. This has resulted in the decentralization of musical culture, which until then was reserved for the population of the Central Valley of Costa Rica. The school reaches out into provinces, districts, communities, neighboring districts and even internationally, giving recitals and chamber concerts as a cultural extension
Oscar Valverde Barahona He was born on May 3rd of 1988 in Pérez Zeledón. Since he was young, he showed aptitude towards music when at age of 8, entered to School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón under the supervision of Wilberth Vargas and Leonel Calvo (musicians of great importance in Costa Rica) and Carlos Castellón in the area of saxophone. Four years after that, thanked to these professors, he began his career as sol-fa and recorder teaching assistant in the school. In 2007, he was appointed as saxophone professor in the School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón under guidance of Leonel Rodriguez (trombonist in Trombones de Costa Rica). His experience as saxophonist In 2007, Oscar became a saxophonist in the advanced Band and in the Quartet of Saxophones from National Institute of Music, also the Big Band of Costa Rica, National Symphonic Orchestra of Costa Rica, Juniors Symphonic Orchestra of Costa Rica (as soloist), Middle Band and Big Band of School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón. In 2006, he performed as saxophonist in the advanced Band and in the Quartet of Saxophones from National Institute of Music, also the Big Band of Costa Rica, Middle Band and Big Band of School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón, as well as National Band of Limón. From 2001 to 2005, he was saxophonist in Middle Band and Big Band of School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón. Experience with other musicians Oscar has been on stage with famous musicians such as Gerardo Rojas, Harold Guillen (saxophonists), Érick Sánchez, Juan Carlos Meza, Luis Miguel Araya, Hernán Umaña (trumpet players), José Andrés Valerio (violinist of National Symphonic Orchestra of Costa Rica), Alessio Benvenutti (Italian violinist, Milan Orchestra), Leonel Rodríguez, Alfredo Poveda, Alejandro Gutiérrez (trombonists), Delberth Castellón, Jorge Rodríguez (oboists), Carlos Castellón and Vinicio Meza (clarinetists), Patricia Valverde, Luis Monge, Manuel Matarrita (pianists), Marco Redondo (bassoonist), Danilo Castro (bassist), among others. He had also taken master courses with them.

Moreover, he has accompanied famous musical groups such as Swing en 4 (Costa Rican), Fine Arts Brass (European), Coro Surá de Costa Rica, Son de Tikicia (salsa, Costa Rican), among others. Since 2001 until 2007, he has gone to seven camps with Middle Band and Big Band of School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón. In 2005, Camp – Get Together among School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón and Municipal Band of Guadalupe. In 2007, he assisted to a camp with the Advanced Band of the National Institute of Music. International Tours In 2007, he went on a tour with School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón to the 10th anniversary of Camerata Bach in Nicaragua. In 2006, he went on a cross-cultural tour to Panama with the School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón. Recognitions and awards 2005, National University awarded him the 1st place of Benny Moré Music Creation prize during Brunca Literary Contest. In the same year, San Isidro International University recognized his effort and dedication towards music. In this year, La Nación newspaper published in Viva section, an article with his picture, stating “Oscar Valverde, a native musician” 2002, he was designated as distinguished student from the School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón.
