DECEMBER 2017 Whats New in Youth Services! Concept Books Section: The Youth Services department has a new Concept Books section in the Picture books area to support early literacy skills. Included are Alphabet, Number, Shape, and Color books with spine labels to provide easy access to these books. Train Table: We have an exciting new train table with tracks and an animal train set in the Play Area! Read to Rover: The children are able to read to a trained therapy dog once a month. This started in November 2017 for Grades K thru 6 th . Twelve Days of Christmas Reading Challenge Read for 12 days starting on December 4 th and finish by December 29 th . Please read for a minimum of 30 minutes each day. Color an ornament every day that you read. Pick up your ornament coloring sheet at the Youth Services desk. What’s New in Youth Services!

Friendship Bracelets Monday, December 11th at 6:00 p.m. Grades: 3th- 12th Length: 1 hour Limit: 15 children Learn to make colorful friendship bracelets for your friends and family with embroidery thread provided by the library.

Read to Rover Tuesday, December 19th at 7:00 p.m. Grade: K-6th Length: 1 hour Limit: 8 children (15 minute time slots) Improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a therapy dog. The dogs and handlers are from Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy. Children in grades K-6 can come and practice reading aloud to a licensed therapy dog and build the confidence needed to be successful readers. This program is for children who already know how to read. Please sign up in person at the Youth Services desk for a 15 minute time slot.

Family Dance Party Thursday, December 21st at 6:30 p.m. Length: 30 minutes Children of all ages and their families No registration is required, but space is limited. Put on your dancing shoes and kick up your heels as we crank out your favorite tunes. Any child age 8 and under must have caregiver present in the program room.

Youth Events Registration is required for the following youth and teen events unless otherwise noted.

To register you must have a Prairie Trails Public Library card. You can register online or in person, we do not register over the phone. An adult can register up to three children on one adult library card IN PERSON only.

Registration begins November 27th

at 9:00 a.m. To register online, go to our webpage under About Us and click on Calendar. Select the program you want to register for and fill out the online form. Your child’s library card must be used. Make sure you read all information as you register and

follow the age and grade restrictions for programs.

LEGO Zone Saturday, December 2nd at 11:00 a.m. Ages: 3-12 years Length: 45 minutes No registration is required but space is limited. Join us for fun and imaginative LEGO-building! We will

provide the LEGO’s and you can bring your creative design ideas! All materials must stay at the library, but parents may bring cameras to capture the creations. Any child age 5 or under must have caregiver present in the program room.

DIY Paper Snowflakes Wednesday, December 6th at 6:00 p.m. Grades: 3rd- 6th Limit: 15 Length: 45 minutes Join us in creating and designing your own paper snowflakes as we listen to holiday music!

Fun with Fuse Beads Saturday, December 9th at 1:00 p.m. Grade: 3th - 12th Limit: 15 children Length: 90 minutes Come and make fantastic Fuse Bead crafts. Arrange the beads to make your own masterpieces! Various designs available too! Fuse Bead creations can be used for ornaments, key chains and more! (Fuse Beads are small colorful plastic Beads). This program will have special beads and patterns available from the Minions movie.

Drop In Storytimes Holiday & Seasonal Stories (week of December 11th– 15th)

Join us for a week of fun seasonal and holiday stories!! No registration is required for this storytime, but space is limited.

Children of all ages and their families. Any child age 5 or under must have caregiver present in program room.

Teen Events

Fun with Fuse Beads Saturday, December 9th at 1:00 p.m. Grade: 3th - 12th Limit: 15 children Length: 90 minutes Come and make fantastic Fuse Bead crafts. Contest! Zentangle Post Its: Teens during the month of December, decorate the Young Adult

area with zentangles! Zentangles help relieve stress, but they are also a fun way to create beautiful and unique images. Using Post Its, create a one of a kind zentangle that can be as simple or complex as you like.

These events are designated for teens in 7th-12

th grade. Registration is required using a Prairie Trails Public Library card unless otherwise noted.

Introduction to Meditation Tuesday, December 19th at 7pm This program is limited to 20 PTPLD participants. Patrons may register one guest. Learn to cultivate your relationship with awareness by exploring traditions and techniques to clear the mind and deepen your experience with life. This workshop is great for all levels of participants from beginners to experienced practitioners. You are encouraged to bring a yoga mat; however one will be provided for you to use during class if needed. Meditation can also be done sitting in a chair.

Ugly Sweater Holiday Bingo Wednesday, December 20th at 10:00am This program is limited to 40 PTPLD participants. Patrons may register up to 2 guests. Kick off your holiday celebration this year with breakfast and bingo! Dress to impress in your most stylish (ugly) holiday sweater for a chance to win additional prizes!

John F. Kennedy Assassination Thursday, December 28th at 7pm No PTPLD library card required to register. Lecturer Tim Wilsey provides a look at a case that puzzled the nation for years. He discusses the various conspiracy theories surrounding the murder of the President as well as what was and was not reported to the general public. In addition, he will review recent findings regarding the most talked about plot in U.S. history.

Finding the Silver Lining Monday, December 4th at 2pm No PTPLD library card required to register. A representative of the Stickney Public Township will focus on methods for countering negative self-talk and introduce positive coping skills. She will discuss how to identify unhelpful thinking styles, recognize the warning signs, and develop strategies to create more balanced thoughts.

Al Capone and the 1933 World’s Fair Thursday, December 7th at 7pm No PTPLD library card required to register. Author William Hazelgrove presents a historical look at Chicago during the darkest days of the Great Depression. He tells the story of the city of Chicago fighting the hold of organized crime to be able to put on the 1933 World’s Fair and of the six millionaire businessmen who beat Al Capone at his own game and ended the gangster era.

Local Author: Lou Holly Book Signing Tuesday, December 12th at 7pm No PTPLD library card required to register.

Lou Holly, author of Southside Hustle, Burbank native, and Reavis High School alumnus, will be doing a book signing for his latest crime novel Razorback. He will perform a reading from his newest book and discuss the processes of writing and getting published. Razorback is inspired by 1940s and 50s film noir and tells the story of Vint Mercurio, who must decide between his safety and the temptation of a big score. Titles may be purchased during this event.

Christmas Craft: Yarn Hat Ornament Thursday, December 14th at 7pm This program is limited to 20 PTPLD participants. Patrons may register one guest.

Join us for a demonstration of the step-by-step process to creating a yarn hat ornament! Perfect as holiday gifts or as a decoration for your own tree! All materials will be provided and participants take home the items they make.

Wild Prairie Book Club

Adult Coloring Night Monday, December 11th at 7pm This program is limited to 20 PTPLD participants. Patrons may register up to 2 guests. Coloring is a relaxing activity that adults can enjoy, too. Come join us for an evening of coloring and conversation. We provide the coloring pages, colored pencils, and peaceful environment. You sit back, relax, and color! Light refreshments will be served.
