SERVICE NOTES — ADVENT Advent is a Latin word that means “coming.” The season of Advent is the four week period

before Christmas that the Church uses to remember the “coming” of the Christ. We celebrate

that he came once as a baby in Bethlehem, and that he will come again at the end of time.

Today we remember the forerunner to the Savior, John the Baptizer. God sent John ahead of

Jesus to prepare the way for the coming King. Today we pray that God prepares our hearts for

Christ to come in Word and Sacrament and come again in glory on the Last Day.

May God bless your worship.

W DECEMBER 4, 2011 ADVENT 2

TODAY’S THEME:

PREPARE THE WAY!

3

THE GATHERING RITE

The cantor introduces the refrain. Then the congregation repeats the refrain and sings it again as

indicated.

Choir: Come, O come, O come, Emmanuel. Come with us on earth here to dwell.

C: Refrain

Choir: Rouse us from sleep, wake us from our slumber, banish the darkness of night.

C: Refrain

L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

L: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the

Holy Spirit be with you.

L: The Lord Jesus comes to us and offers his grace and love. It is good for us to repent

of our sins and to plead for his mercy.

C: Holy and Merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have

disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I have done what is evil and

failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in

eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I

4

pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

L: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be

the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his

authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of

the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie

L: Lord Jesus, you came to gather the nations into the peace of God’s kingdom. Lord,

have mercy.

L: You come in Word and Sacrament to strengthen us in holiness. Christ, have mercy.

L: You will come in glory with salvation for your people. Lord, have mercy.

L: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive our sins, and bring us to everlasting

life. Amen.

5

PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray.

The leader says the Prayer of the Day.

C: Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

THE CHILDREN’S SERMON

THE FIRST LESSON: ISAIAH 40:1-11 1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim

to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has

received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins.

3 A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the

wilderness a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill

made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5 And the glory of

the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD

has spoken."

6 A voice says, "Cry out." And I said, "What shall I cry?"

"All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. 7 The grass

withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the

people are grass. 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands

forever."

9 You who bring good tidings to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good

tidings to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the

towns of Judah, "Here is your God!"

10 See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and his arm rules for him. See, his reward

is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. 11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He

gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that

have young.

6

THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH

Sung by the choir and congregation as indicated.

Choir: Light a candle in the night. Prepare the way for the holy Light: God with us,

Emmanuel, eternal hope with us to dwell. Child of hope, come in your glory,

heaven’s gift, the wondrous story! Messiah King shall come to earth. Prepare your

heart for his holy birth.

Two Advent candles are lit as Scripture is read. Then the congregation sings:

Choir: O Come to my heart, Lord Jesus; there is room in my heart for Thee.

THE SECOND LESSON: 2 PETER 3:8-14 8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand

years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as

some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but

everyone to come to repentance.

7

10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar;

the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?

You ought to live holy and godly lives 12as you look forward to the day of God and speed its

coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements

will melt in the heat. 13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new

heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

14So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be

found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

HYMN: #731, The King will Come at Age’s End

The cantor will sing verse 1, and the congregation will sing verses 2-5. Printed on the next page.

THE GOSPEL LESSON: MARK 1:1-8 1The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

2It is written in Isaiah the prophet:

"I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"— 3"a voice of one

calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' "

4And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of

repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5The whole Judean countryside and all the people of

Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan

River. 6John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he

ate locusts and wild honey. 7And this was his message: "After me will come one more

powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8I

baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

THE SERMON: Hearts Prepared for the coming Lord

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all

that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the

Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of

one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our

salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin

Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He

suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will

come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father

and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has

spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We

acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the

dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE OFFERING: The members of Faith Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord's work in this

community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which

supports our ministry.

THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH:

THE LORD’S PRAYER: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those

who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

10

THE SACRAMENT

Faith Lutheran Church practices close communion. We ask that only members partake of the

Sacrament.

L: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

L: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up to the Lord.

L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

L: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with

every spiritual blessing. Through his holy prophets, he promised a King to bring light

to those living in darkness and in the shadow of death. Now have come the

salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ.

To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and

glory forever and ever.

11

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION:

L: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had

given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: “Take and eat. This is

my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it all of

you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the

forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

12

THE DISTRIBUTION:
