PUT ON JOY Today, Baruch speaks of the splendor that lies ahead for the city of Jerusalem and for all of us, regardless of where home is for us. Throw off strife, he tells us, and put on joy. Like a favorite old sweatshirt, joy fits, and how warm it keeps us, even when the winds blow cold. Paul knows of this joy as he pens his letter to the Philippians, praying that they may grow in their ability to discern what is righteous and good. And Luke speaks to us of John, who was foretold by Isaiah and who sings a similar song—“Prepare the way of the Lord,” for salvation is at hand. A man ahead of his time, Baruch spent his days joyfully awaiting a distant glory. On this Second Sunday of Advent, Paul and John know that this glory is upon us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co .

Como una vieja cobija favorita, el gozo nos queda a la medida, y qué bien nos mantiene calientes, por muy frío que sople el viento. Pablo sabe de ese gozo cuando escribe su carta a los filipenses, orando para que crezcan en su habilidad de discernir lo que es bueno y justo. Y Lucas nos habla de Juan, el que fue anunciado por Isaías y que canta una canción parecida: “Preparen el camino del Señor” pues la salvación está al llegar.

L A C O L U M N A D E L P A S T O R Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

Las lecturas de hoy nos hablan de dos realidades de nuestra existencia—que la vida es un viaje y Cristo a través del Espíritu Santo esta siempre presente en nuestras vidas, aun cuando a menudo fallamos al reconocer este hecho. Ahora, podemos encontrar este hecho difícil de aceptar por las cosas que están pasando en nuestras vidas, o por la confusión que oímos o vemos a veces. Las lecturas nos recuerdan que Dios no nos ha olvidado sino que somos nosotros los que nos hemos alejado de El por las decisiones que hacemos, las alternativas que tomamos el significado de Su amor por nosotros y la humanidad. La vida, si, es un viaje de crecimiento, de renovación, de pruebas, de pérdidas, de amor, y algunas veces de sentimientos de desesperanza. Pero Jeremías y San Pablo nos recuerdan que debemos de mantenernos enfocados y leales a los demás y a Cristo aun en medio de nuestras pruebas pues Cristo nunca está lejos. A menudo queremos respuestas urgentes a nuestras oraciones o alguna situación que nos está impactando –recuerda que el tiempo de Dios no es el nuestro. El exilio de la gente escogida es la mas clara evidencia de que Dios escucha nuestras oraciones, pero no siempre tan rápido como quisiéramos. Debemos de continuar teniendo fe y recordar que así como restauro Jerusalén, también nosotros seremos restaurados a través de Cristo, la promesa de nuestra salvación. San Lucas, al entrar al Adviento en este nuevo Año Litúrgico hace eco al principio de un orden del desdoblamiento del mundo o ministerio, el cual es Jesús, la Palabra de Dios. Recordemos pues que Jesús es la luz y la restauración en el Padre desde el principio del tiempo. Mantente firme porque la Palabra del Señor está en nosotros. ¡Aleluya! Padre Enrique

Segundo Domingo de Adviento Este martes es la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción, y será el día en que el Papa Francisco abra la “Puerta Santa” en la Basílica de San Pedro, simbólicamente abriendo el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia. En las Escritura de hoy, Baruc confiadamente

anticipa la sanación que Dios hace de la desesperanza de la humanidad y Pablo ve a Dios llevar a su cumplimiento nuestro discernimiento, conocimiento y amor. Desde nuestra experiencia de vida y de nosotros podemos hacer que esas profecías parezcan muy optimistas aunque irremediablemente ingenuas. El Papa Francisco nos desafía a vivir este Año Jubilar como un tiempo de gracia cuando la misericordia de Dios despierte nuestro entusiasmo para vivir nuestra llamada bautismal como personas del Evangelio, nuestra esperanza renovada y nosotros vueltos a comprometer a una caridad desinteresada. Observen que en el Evangelio de Lucas, Dios pasa de largo a los líderes religiosos y políticos para en su lugar hablar en el desierto estéril con un creyente humilde la palabra salvadora que transformará la historia. T H E P A S T O R ’ S C O L U M N Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The readings for today convey two realities of our existence—that life is a journey and Christ through the Holy Spirit is always present in our lives, though we often fail to recognize this fact. Now, we may find this rather difficult to accept perhaps because the “way things” maybe going, or perhaps because of the turmoil we hear about or witness. The readings remind us that the Lord has never forsaken or forgotten us, rather this is quite the opposite it is us who abandon Him either through our decisions, or choices, that diminish the significance of His love for us and humanity. Life, yes, it is a journey of growth, of renewal, of trails, of losses, of love, and sometimes of feeling hopelessness. But take heart as we are reminded by Jeremiah and Saint Paul to stay focused and loyal to one another and to Christ in the midst of our trails, Christ is never far. Most often we would like immediate responses to our prayers or to the situation impacting us—remember that God’s time is not our time. The exile of the Chosen people is stark evidence that God will answer our prayers, but not always right away or as soon as we would want. We must continue to have faith and remember how He restored Jerusalem and we too will be restored through Christ, the promise of our salvation. Saint Luke, as we enter Advent and the new Liturgical Year is echoing the beginning of a new unfolding world order or ministry, which is Jesus, the Word of God. Let us therefore take heart because Jesus is the light and our restoration in the Father since the beginning of time. Hold firm for the Word of the Lord is upon us. Alleluia!

Second Sunday of Advent

This Tuesday, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis will open the “Holy Door” in Saint Peter’s Basilica, symbolically opening the Jubilee Year of Mercy. In today’s scriptures, Baruch confidently anticipates God’s healing of the brokenness of humanity, and Paul sees God bringing our discernment, knowledge, and love to fulfillment. Our experience of life and of ourselves can make such prophecies seem wildly optimistic, even hopelessly naïve. Pope Francis challenges us to live this Jubilee Year as a graced time, when God’s mercy reawakens our enthusiasm to live our baptismal call as gospel people, our hope renewed and ourselves recommitted to selfless charity. Notice that in Luke’s Gospel today, God bypasses the religious elite and

politically powerful to speak to a humble believer in the barren desert the saving word that will transform history. The Joy of Living—14th Step

Join forces with others who embrace the “missionary option” from The Joy of the Gospel. Ask God for the gift of peace and gratitude as you conclude this journey. Turn your heart toward God. My heart is restless, Augustine wrote, until it rests in thee, O God. And yet, I find so many ways to be busy, to fail to take the time to rest, or pray, or reflect, or even to exercise, Grant me now the gift of time used well to balance my life and simplify my choices so I might live with happiness. Pause to think about all the things we do to keep busy, too busy to pray. Give me the grace of prayer, your Spirit welling up within me, filling me with peace and your presence. I pray with an open heart and willing spirit. Amen. We are not alone. It is very important for us, when we’re on a spiritual journey like this one, to connect with others. In learning to live more simply, for example, it helps to be with others who share the same goal. We learn from each other and support each other in our choices. In learning to make choices which result in a healthy environment and a more sustainable agriculture, knowing we are not alone helps a great deal! Choosing to ear less, to share more, and to purge our over-bought possessions takes courage born of friendship and companionship. And likewise, when we make the decision to support the poor with our own money, other financial possibilities change for us. We have less because we are giving more away. So having support is a key part of success. We once may have said to ourselves that “We live in the world and we go to church on Sunday.” Now we must say instead, “We are the Church—and we go out to the world all week long!” Be a Joiner. In this step, we encourage you to form a small group or community with others who share this journey in your parish. In The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis reminds us of this. Any Church community, if it thinks it can comfortable go its own way without creative concern and effective cooperation in helping the poor to live with dignity and reaching out to everyone, will also risk breaking down, however much it may talk about social issues or criticize governments. It will easily drift into a spiritual worldliness camouflaged by religious practices, unproductive meetings, and empty talk.” Reach out to your parish. The very life of your parish is at stake, as Pope Francis is telling us. When we celebrate the Eucharist we the people of God become what we receive. We become the Body of Christ. Well, then, we must care for the Body of Christ in all its parts, rich and poor. Create a parish community of men and women engaged in the missionary work to which Pope Francis is calling us! Invite everyone in the parish to experience the freedom you have found in living more simply. Let everyone know about the joy of just living. In this we see the “missionary option” to which Pope Francis is calling Catholics, Christians, and all people of good will. We are missionaries now! We go forth to speak words of welcome and to do deeds of justice for the people of the world. Join forces with others who embrace the “missionary option” from The Joy of the Gospel. POINSETTAS / NOCHEBUENAS It is our custom at St. Lawrence to decorate the church with poinsettias for Christmas liturgies. If you would like to remember a loved one who has died or honor someone special, come to the table after Mass to request a poinsettia in their name. We will be

available after all Masses during the first two Weeks of Advent. Donation is $10. Monies collected will be used to purchase 50 poinsettias and other liturgical articles. Thank you for your support. La Alegría de Vivir—14⁰ Paso Une tus fuerzas con otros que también abrazan la opción misionera de La Alegría del Evangelio. Pídele a Dios el regalo de la paz y la gratitud mientrás concluyes con este viaje. Voltea tu corazón hacia Dios Mi corazón no descansa, escribió San Agustín, hasta que descanse en ti, O Dios. Y todavía, encuentro tantas maneras de estar ocupado, que fallo en tomar tiempo para descansar, orar, reflexionar y hasta para ejercitarme, Dame ahora el regalo de usar mi tiempo bien para balan-cear mi vida y simplificar mis opciones para vivir feliz. Has una pausa para pensar acerca de todas las cosas que te mantienen ocupado, muy ocupado para orar. Dame la gracia de la oración, tu Espíritu que mora en mí, llenándome de tu paz y de tu presencia. Ruego con un corazón abierto y un espíritu pronto. Amen. No estamos solos. Es muy importante para nosotros, cuando estamos yendo en un viaje espiritual como éste, conectarnos con otros. Aprendiendo a vivir mas simple, por ejemplo, nos ayuda a estar con otros que comparten el mismo ideal. Aprendemos de los demás y nos apoyamos en nuestras opciones. Al aprender a hacer opciones que resultan en un ambiente mas saludable y en una agricultura mas substancial, saber que no estamos solos nos ayuda grandemente. El escoger el oír menos, compartir mas, y a purgar nuestras posesiones exageradas toma coraje nacido de la amistad y el compañerismo. Y también, cuando hacemos la decisión de ayudar al pobre con nuestro dinero, otras posibilidades financieras cambian para nosotros. Tenemos menos porque estamos dando mas. De tal manera que tener ese soporte es una parte clave del éxito. Quizás alguna vez nos hemos dicho que: “Vivimos en el mundo y vamos a misa el Domingo”. Ahora podemos decir en lugar de eso que: “Nosotros somos la Iglesia –y vamos hacia el mundo durante toda la semana”. Se parte de un grupo. En este paso, te motivamos a formar un gru-po pequeño o comunidad con otros con quienes comparten este viaje en tu parroquia. En la Alegría del Evangelio, el Papa Francisco nos re-cuerda esto. Cualquier comunidad parroquial si piensa que puede hacer sus cosas confortablemente sin ocuparse de que el pobre viva con digni-dad y ayudando a los demás, puede correr el riesgo de desintegrarse, aun cuando pueda hablar mucho de aspectos sociales o criticar el gobierno. Se llegará fácilmente a una espiritualidad mundana camuflada de prácticas religiosas, reuniones improductivas y pláticas vacías. Estira el brazo a tu parroquia. La vida misma de la parroquia está en peligro, como no lo dice el Papa Francisco. Cuando celebramos la Eucarística, nosotros el pueblo de Dios, nos convertimos en lo que recibimos. Nos convertimos en el Cuerpo de Cristo. Bueno, entonces, necesitamos cuidar de ese cuerpo de Cristo en todos sus aspectos, pobres y ricos. ¡Crea una comunidad parroquial de hombres y mujeres comprometidos en el trabajo misionero al cual el Papa Francisco nos está llamando! Invita a todos en tu parroquia a experimentar la libertad que has encontrado al vivir mas simple. Déjales saber a todos acerca de la alegría de vivir. En esto vemos la “opción misionera” a la que el Papa Francisco está llamando a Católicos, Cristianos, y toda la gente de buena voluntad. Ahora somos misioneros. Vamos ahora a dar palabras de bienvenida y a hacer actos de justicia para la gente del mundo. Une tus fuerzas con otros que abrazan la “opción misionera” de la Alegría del Evangelio (ve el boletín).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, trees are beginning to appear in living rooms throughout the parish. To a complete outsider to our culture, it must seem an odd thing indeed. The “roots” of this custom are in liturgical drama: religious plays performed in the churches and town squares of medieval Europe. The favorite theme for this time of year was the “Paradise Play,” a dramatic history of the human race from the Garden of Eden to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The language and music varied from place to place, but one feature was always in place: a great tree decorated with apples. As a prop, it provided lots of material for the actors: the temptation, shelter for the manger, and a reminder of the wood of the cross. Soon people began to bring paradise trees” into their homes, decorating them with gifts and lighted candles. Many Germans give credit to Martin Luther for transforming the “Paradise Tree” into the evergreen Christmas tree. Walking home on a starry Advent night, he was so awed by the beauty of the night that he hauled a pine tree inside and decorated it with lighted candles. Americans were holdouts. It took until 1856 for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to decriminalize Christmas decorations, the old Puritan dislikes falling before the waves of Irish and German immigrants with traditions firmly in hand! TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1726, Juan de la Cruz (1542-1591) fue canonizado por el Papa Benito XIII. Nació en la región de Castilla en España, este doctor de la Iglesia junto con Teresa de Ávila fue reformador de la Orden Carmelita. Muchas órdenes religiosas del siglo XV sufrieron grandes decadencias. Por eso mientras los Protestantes se separaban de la Iglesia, los religiosos descalzos, recoletos y observantes buscaban reformar órdenes religiosas, como la Orden de la Bienaventurada Virgen María del Monte Carmelo, uniéndose siempre más a la Iglesia Romana. Para los reformadores católicos quedarse en la Iglesia no fue fácil, ¡sin embargo se quedaron! Aunque sus reformas fueron apoyadas por los Papas, muchos de ellos como Juan de la Cruz tuvieron que aguantar muchas oposiciones y persecuciones para lograr sus reformas. Estas reformas ardían con el deseo de amar bien a Cristo Jesús y a su cuerpo que es la Iglesia. En sus poesías, Juan de la Cruz muestra la fuerza de esta llama de amor vivo a pesar de la oscuridad de la noche que no lo deja encontrar al amante (Dios).
