S L I newsletter
Welcome to our first issue of the Student Leadership Institute newsletter! My name is Austin Nation, 2008-2009 SLI Director. My major is nursing, and I will graduate this year with my bachelor‟s degree.
I am so thrilled that you‟ve decided to become a part of our
premiere leadership program. You are in for one of the most exciting and beneficial experiences of your academic career. I can honestly say, in all
my years of working in nursing administration, I was never offered these kinds of leadership workshops to help me advance in my career without having to pay hundreds of dollars, and it‟s free
to all of us at CSUF. As our motto says, these leadership concepts are truly going to be “Skills That Last A Lifetime.”
In addition to the many workshops we offer, we are planning several social events throughout the year to offer
current and prospective participants an opportunity to come together and network with one another, including SLI alumni and the members of the SLI Coordinating Committee (SLICC). Our
first such event is the October 6th SLI MIXER from 11am-2pm
in TSU-Pavilion B. And of course, food will always be provided for you. So bring a friend and come be a part of the fun and
festivities! We are also in the process of starting the SLI Club,
which will be an extension of our program and another way for
you to get involved. This will be a great way to enhance your leadership involvement and practice the principles you are
learning in your workshops.
It is my heart‟s desire that all students on our campus are aware of our awesome leadership program and I would like to encourage you to spread the word about SLI…tell a friend or two. This is going to be a very memorable year and I‟m so glad you are with us. You are now a part of our SLI family!

All SLI Participants! Please make sure you have done all of the following:
Submitted an SLI Application form.
Attended an SLI Orientation (either Group or
One-on-One).
Emailed Holly Harmon ([email protected]) the
track you‟d like to do.
Registered for your workshops online through the
Titan Student Portal.
Filled out and submitted a paper application for each
track.
Upcoming Events
SLI Mixer Monday, October 6, 2008
11:00 AM—2:00 PM, TSU Pavilion B
Free food, free drinks, and a chance to socialize with other
SLI participants. Bring your friends!
We Need SITMs! SITMs, or SLI Introduction Team Members, are an essential element to the success of the program. They ensure that presenters are able to deliver a workshop effectively and
keep track of attendance at each workshop. The SITM experience develops a participant‟s leadership and communication skills.
Being a SITM can also count towards the experiential component of the SLI track; each workshop will count as one
half-hour.
You must attend a group SITM orientation or make a per-
sonal appointment for a one-on-one SITM orientation with a SLICC member in order to become a SITM.
If you‟re interested, or have any questions, please email Mars Dela Pena at [email protected] or stop by the office at TSU 235.

Are you interested in diversity and multicultural understanding? If so, EMBRACE is for you! The EMBRACE Track is a collaboration between the Student Leadership Institute and the Multicultural Leadership Center.
EMBRACE stands for Educating Myself for Better Racial Awareness and Cultural Enrichment. It provides training in leadership as it relates to cultural sensitivity,
diversity, and multicultural understanding by promoting effective intercultural communication. We feel that
diversity training is one of the ways that we can educate each other about multiculturalism and social justice issues. EMBRACE is a safe place
to have discussion, to challenge each other, and to open your mind.
Information
“I joined EMBRACE because I wanted to learn more about my ethnic identity. Prior to EMBRACE, I really didn‟t know much about being Mexican American or even how I wanted to identify myself. EMBRACE gave me an outlet to do that and to explore my culture. I also wanted to join EMBRACE because I wanted to learn about other people‟s experiences. I came from a sheltered community before college so I wanted to educate myself and become more open minded.”
– Monique Cardenas, EMBRACE Director 2008-2009
“I love EMBRACE because it really opened my eyes about the world around me and how we each perceive differences in each other. EMBRACE changed me because now I see that my own identity needs to be explored which is something that I continue to work on. It also showed me that I‟m not just the majority person (White Male) but that I do have target (minority) positions in my own identity. EMBRACE really did change my life. Had I not joined EMBRACE, my life would have went into a total different direction. Now, I am more active in my community and have started participating in more social justice advocacy. It has also given me the opportunity to meet other students who are interested in the same topics and in the same work towards social justice.”
