GOD’S WORK OF SALVATION

God’s work of salvation is the focus of this weekend’s readings. From the prophetic event of Isaiah to Jesus’ understanding of the human condition in Hebrews, con-cluding with Jesus paying our ransom in Mark, God is in control. There may be failings and misunderstandings along the way. We may move away from God, but at our conversion, God leads us back. Like James and John, we may let greed and power blur our vision of what Jesus wants us to know about the Kingdom; but tirelessly we are taught and re-taught what life in the Kingdom will be. Jesus has paid our ransom to ensure that we will share in the Kingdom. It is not unusual to think of Jesus’ ransom as a punishment that he endured. However, it is more accurate, and more like Jesus, for us to recognize ransom as God’s gift to us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co .

LOS DISCÍPULOS Y LA RIQUEZA A veces creemos que tener riquezas materiales es algo malo. Nos convencemos a nosotros mismos que los pobres son los más favorecidos. En las lecturas de hoy, descubrimos que las riquezas materiales no son lo único que nos impide ser discípulos. Ya veremos que hay otros dones más importantes que esas riquezas. Pero así todo, lo que más importa es el uso que hacemos de nuestros dones. Las Escrituras de hoy señalan el valor de los dones de la sabiduría, la confianza en Dios y una cualidad que permite que nuestras acciones reflejen el amor de Dios que llevamos en nuestro interior. No es el oro lo que nos hace tropezar, sino el desear el oro por encima de todo lo demás. En las lecturas de

L A C O L U M N A D E L P A S T O R Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

Las lecturas nos presentan un servidor sufriente, Jesús. A través de su muerte El tomó nuestros pecados y pruebas en amorosa obediencia a el Padre. Sabemos que Jesucristo fue tentado de muchas maneras por eso El puede entender nuestras necesidades. Sin embargo, algunas veces nos preguntamos si Jesús sabe por lo que estamos pasando, nuestro dolor, sufrimiento, pruebas y sentimientos de desesperanza. El sabe todos nuestros sufrimientos y escucha nuestras plegarias. El sufre con los que sufren, habiendo experimentando la vida humana, el sabe lo que sentimos. Probablemente Jesús no experimento cada emoción humana pero tampoco nosotros, pero lo que si tenemos en común con Jesús es que, como El, en cierto sentido podemos experimentar lo que el otro está viviendo. Claro que no tenemos el entendimiento profundo como el Señor, pero El sabe lo que necesitamos y deseamos. Nuestro reto es ser solidarios en nuestras debilidades, vaciarnos de nosotros mismos, servir a los demás, dar nuestra vida a Cristo siendo auténticos discípulos. No seamos como los discípulos que quieren tener los puestos de honor con Cristo en el cielo. Ellos no han escuchado lo que Jesucristo viene a decirles con Su Pasión. Estamos llamados a ser servidores fieles como lo fue Jesús nuestro sacerdote real, todo Dios y todo humano, quien vino a servir a todos; este es nuestro llamado. Y rogamos al Señor diciéndole: “Ten misericordia de nosotros, pues hemos puesto nuestra confianza en ti.” Padre Enrique

T H E P A S T O R ’ S C O L U M N Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The readings present us with the suffering servant Jesus. Through his death he took on our sins and burdens in loving obedience to the Father. We learn that Jesus was tested in every way and, given this fact, Jesus understands and is sympathetic to our needs. Yet, there are times when one could easily question whether Jesus knows what we are going through, our pain, suffering, burdens and feelings of hopelessness. Yes, Jesus does indeed understand our suffering, our pain, and he hears our pleas. His heart goes out to those in need and, having experienced life as a human, he knows what we feel. Granted, Jesus perhaps did not experience every human emotion and yet neither have we. But the common theme we share with Jesus is that, like him, we have a sense of what another is living. Of course we do not have the depth of understanding as does our Lord, and he did not need to experience all of the possible pain in life for him know what we need or desire. Our challenge is to be sympatric in our own weakness, be self-empting, serving others, and giving our life to Christ by being authentic disciples. Let us not be like the some of disciples who seek to have the seat of honor with Christ in heaven. In their failure they do not hear what Jesus is telling them about his looming Passion. We are called to be servant leaders as was Jesus our true high priest, fully God and fully human, who was a servant to all; this is our call. And we pray “Lord let your mercy be on us, as we place our

The Joy of Just Living—Step 7 WATCH WHAT YOU EAT, DRINK, USE UP, AND THROW AWAY! EXAMINE YOUR PATTERNS OF CONSUMPTION. (PRAYER)

Prepare your heart for this examination through prayer.

Turn your heart toward God. May Lord, I raise my heart to you now and begin this seventh step along a journey of faith. I seek now the ability to evaluate honestly my own level of consumption: food, packaging, clothing, where I live, where I travel, and all other things I consume.

Pause to consider what you consume in a single day. I know that the earth cannot sustain itself if my level of consumption is too high. And yet, I find it hard to adjust and to reduce. Grant me now a willing heart for this key step and open within me a spirit of being satisfied. Let your grace fill me with power to change my lifestyle if needed, my desire for more possessions if needed, and my level of overall consumption if needed. I pray with an open heart today, O God, and believe you will fill me with wisdom. Amen.———

FOLLOW YOURSELF AROUND. In this important step, we will do another short inventory, this one aimed at helping you become conscious of your consumption of the world’s goods. This will involve you “following yourself around” for several days, noting everything which you either use or throw away. That’s right, we’re asking you to inspect your own garbage!

A DANGER TO OUR FAITH. “In the Joy of the Gospel,” Pope Francis teaches that over-consuming is a great danger to faith. “Sometimes we prove hard of heart and mind; we are forgetful, distracted, and carried away by the limitless possibilities for consumption and distraction offered by contemporary society,” he said in article 196. “This leads to a kind of alienation at every level, for a “society becomes alienated when its form of social organization, production, and consumption make it more difficult to offer the gift of self and to establish solidarity between people.”” (The latter quote is from St. John Paul II in his 1991 encyclical, Centesimus Annus, #41).

LIVE SIMPLY. The first step in reducing consumption, living more simply and sustainably, is to be aware in the first place about your habits. We often eat and drink mindlessly, not really aware of its impact on our bodies or our earth. And we also often discard things freely—out of sight, out of mind. Because of that, find out exactly where your garbage is being taken. What happens to what you discard after you throw it away?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Irish are rightly tired of being the subject of jokes about guilt. In fact, it is from the Celtic church that the whole experience of reconcili-ation in our tradition was creatively rescued and revived. The Irish church was unique in its origins, not so much organized around dioceses, but around monasteries. Aspects of religious community life readily spilled over into ordinary gatherings of the faithful, including the way people looked at sin and applied remedies. Unlike the public nature of canonical penance, the Irish method was linked to a kind of mentoring process they called “soul friending.” Just as young novice monks might find a mentor in the wisdom of a senior guide, so did a way of penance open up to ordinary folks. Monks were accustomed to frequent confession of faults to the abbot or mentor, who would suggest penances. In time, abbots with a certain flair for this began to share lists of sins and corresponding “tariffs” with others. Some of these books survive, and provide a hair‑raising view of long‑ago sins like cattle rustling, and a great deal of self‑correction involving dips in icy streams and rolling about in thickets of thorns. After the penance was performed, the penitent returned to the confessor, and in a private act marked by the laying on of hands, or perhaps a kiss of the altar, the sinner was restored. Irish monks were committed travelers, and their methods were widely copied. We might say that they saved a sacrament, but at the expense of shifting attention to the sins of the individual and away from the actions of the reconciling community. Rev. Prepara tu corazón para hacer esta examinación a través de la oración.

Voltea tu rostro a Dios. Que pueda Señor levantar mi corazón hacia ti ahora al comenzar este séptimo paso en este caminar de fe. Busco ahora la habilidad de evaluar honestamente mi propio nivel de consumo: comida, ropa, lo que empaco, donde vivo, donde viajo y todas las otras cosas que consumo.

Has una pausa para considerar lo que consumes en un solo día. Se que la tierra no puede sostenerse si mi nivel de consume es muy alto. Y todavía me parece dificultarme y reducirlo. Dame un Corazón dispuesto a este paso clave y abre dentro de mi un espíritu de sentirme satisfecho. Permite que tu gracia me lleve con es estilo de vida que necesito, mi deseo de mas posesiones si necesito, y mi nivel de consume si necesito. Oro con un corazón abierto, O Dios, y creo que me llenaras con sabiduría. Amen.

SIGUETE POR DONDE VAS. Es este paso importante, haremos otro pequeño inventario, este con el fin de ayudarte a que seas mas consiente de tu consume de los bienes del mundo. Esto envuelve que te sigas lo que haces por varios días, anotando todo lo que tu usas o tiras. Eso es, te estamos pidiendo que inspecciones tu propia basura.

UN PELIGRO PARA TU FE. “En la Alegría del Evangelio” el Papa Francisco nos enseña que el consumir de más es un gran peligro para nuestra fe. "Algunas veces probamos que somos duros de corazón y mente; somos olvidadizos, distraídos e inconscientes por las posibilidades ilimitadas del consumismo y las distracción que ofrece la sociedad contemporánea” dijo en el articulo 196. “Esto lleva a una clase de alineación en cada nivel, pues cuando una sociedad se convierte alineada, ya sea en su forma social de organización, producción, y consume, se le hace difícil ofrecer el regalo de si mismo y de establecer la solidaridad entre la gente. (Esta frase es de San Juan Pablo II de su encíclica, Centésimas Annus, #41)

VIVE SIMPLEMENTE. El primer paso para reducir el consumismo y para vivir mas simple y sustancialmente es conocer en primer lugar tus hábitos. A menudo comemos y bebemos sin pensar; sin darnos cuenta del impacto que esto tiene en nuestros cuerpos. Y también descartamos las cosas libremente—sin ver, sin pensar. Por esto, conoce exactamente a donde va tu basura. ¿Qué pasa con ella después de que tu la tiras?

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Santiago y Juan, además de ser hermanos, eran tipos muy atrevidos. Se acercaron a Jesús para pedirle puestos de poder y autoridad en el Reino que estaba estableciendo. Al darse cuenta, los demás discípulos se molestaron con ellos, probablemente porque deseaban los mismos puestos. La tentación y el deseo de poder es algo muy común a todos los seres humanos. Todos deseamos el primer puesto y la estima de los demás. No obstante, Jesús nos recuerda que no es fácil tener responsabilidad. La autoridad es un cáliz difícil de beber ya que muchas veces contiene una bebida amarga y el peso o decisión de ser fieles al Evangelio, aún a costa de la propia vida. Por tal motivo, la persona que quiera estar cerca de Jesús tendrá que aprender a ser como Cristo, quien no vino a imponer su autoridad buscando ser servido, sino que vino a servir. Él, siendo Dios, no se aferró a su condición divina, sino que se hizo uno de tantos, cuidando a su madre por muchos años, juntándose con pecadores, lavando los pies a sus discípulos y dando la vida por todas las personas. ALL SOULS PLENARY INDULGENCE

On the days of November 1st—8th inclusive, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray even if only mentally for the departed. Conditions for the indulgence:

1. Only 1 plenary indulgence can be granted per day. 2. It is necessary to be in the state of grace, at least by completion of the work. 3. Freed from attachment to sin, even venial sin, is necessary; otherwise the indulgence is

only partial. (By this is meant attachment to a particular sin, not sin in general.) 4. Holy Communion must be received each time the indulgence is sought. 5. Prayers must be recited for the intentions of the Holy Father on each day the indulgence is

sought. (No particular prayers are prescribed. One Our Father and one Hail Mary will suffice.) 6. A sacramental confession must be made within a week of completion of the prescribed

work. (Once confession made during week, made with the intention of gaining all the indulgences, suffices.)
