By Your cross, O Lord, You destroyed death; to the thief You opened

paradise. The myrrhbearers sorrow You transformed into joy, and You

sent Your apostles forth to proclaim that You had risen from the dead,

Christ our God, bestowing on all the world Your great mercy.

Becoming a partner with the Apostles in way of life and successor to

their thrones, O God-inspired Saint, in the active life you found an en-

trance to contemplation. Hence you rightly expounded the word of truth,

and you shed your blood in struggling for the faith, O Hieromartyr Igna-

tius. Intercede with Christ our God, beseeching Him to save our souls.

Apolytikion of St. Katherine - Plagal 1st Mode

The all-blessed bride of Christ let us extol in song * Katerina the divine

and protector of Sinai * our assistance and unfailing firm support; * for

she did muzzle brilliantly * the ungodly clever men by the power of the

Spirit. And now as a crowned Martyr * the great mercy she pleads for all

    of us.

    Kontakion - 1st Tone - p. 251 - 253

For our salvation You took flesh and You sanctified the Virgins

    womb; You blessed the aged Simeon as You lay resting in his arms;

and having come to save us all, O Christ our God, to these troubled

times, bring Your lasting peace. Give strong and undaunted faith to

all Your people, O only lover of mankind.

The Reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:16 -18; 7:1 BRETHREN, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will wel-come you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. The Reading is from The Gospel of Matthew 15:21-28 At that time, Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He an-swered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he an-swered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly.

    FROM THE CHANCELLORS DESK

When I visit shopping malls or walk along a crowded street in downtown Atlanta, I often see people wearing large silver and gold crosses around their necks. When I ask them what their significance is, they appear con-fused or surprised. Some actually admit it is just a nice piece of jewelry. Setting that aside, I believe the cross is a sacred symbol, and as Chris-tians, we should be known less for wearing crosses than bearing cross-es. I dont know about you, but Im increasingly concerned about our preference for the cross as a decoration, rather than as a means of de-votion and a discipline.

When Jesus called His first Disciples, Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John, He didnt call them to a life of thoughtful contemplation only. Je-sus called them into live-action missionary service leading up to His Cross and beyond. The Apostles had been making their living by catch-ing fish. Now they would make a new life by catching people, by evange-lizing a Gospel (the Good News of our Lord) that is more caught than taught.

Thats what it means to lift up or bear ones cross. The cross is not about death. The cross is about life. The cross is deliverance from what is pre-venting us from being alive, from being a human being fully alive.

How can the Kingdom of God come near us today? How do we incar-nate Christ in a world that seems so broken and battered? Waving the cross of Christ before the near-sighted, self-centered eyes of the world is not worth it. As Disciples, we have to be willing to bear the sacrificial cross we have been given, rather than finding ourselves just wearing a cross and assuming that simple behavior defines who we are. No, Jesus called His disciples to service, to sacrifice, to being the last, the least, and the lowliest. When Jesus promised to make His first Disciples fishers of people, it was a mission that came with fishhooks in thumbs, raw and ripped hands, long days of hard work and the possibility of empty nets.

Jesus said, If any want to become My followers, let them deny them-selves and take up their cross and follow Me. 25For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for My sake will

find it. (Matthew 16:24-25). Lifes crosses are not barricades block-ing our path to the future, but rather bridges that take us across. The hard things of life make it easier, not harder, for us to be the human beings that God made us to be.

To illustrate, I want to share a story about the sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). He is most famous for his sculpture The Thinker. It seems that one day Rodin noticed a large crucifix that had been dis-carded in a pile of trash. Although it was terribly marred and defaced, Rodin perceived that it could be restored to its original beauty. Conse-quently he and some companions carried it to his home. But the cross was too big for the house. What to do? Rather than return it to the trash heap, Rodin decided to knock out some walls and raise the roof of his house to make room for the cross. Has the cross of Christ made you knock out some walls and raise the roof of your life? If not, we could examine our heart, our priorities, and our commitment to Him. It might just change the way we view and live our life! Amen! +Fr. George Tsahakis Chancellor

ZOE Hi to all our ZOE friends Our February meeting has been changed from the 2nd Thursday in February to February 23rd so we can help with things that need to be done for the fes-tival which will be starting the very next day. There will be lots to do, we need helping hands for a few hours.

The March 9th meeting will be an outing to 'Exploration Tower' in Port Canaveral at the price of $4.00 + tax for seniors. You will be on your own for transportation. The museum-like tour is hands-on and the view from the Tower by floors, is tru-ly scenic. There may be a price break for over 20

attending but $4.00 stated from their website, seems reasonable. Afterwards lunch will be at Zachary's Restaurant in Cape Canaveral, not far from the Tower. More info on all as the time gets closer, we will need a headcount for the Tower and restaurant well ahead of time. April will be a 'NO meeting' month since preparation for Easter/Pascha will be in order and families will be busy. More info down the road, but May and June will end on high notes for anoth-er exciting year for our ZOE get-togethers ... Call Tresa Roman at 321 757 9404 or Christine Balba at cell # 603 233 4659 or Elaine Roman at 321 757 4348 with any questions... ZOE... here's to LIFE !!!
