From Father Mike
“Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what
matters to God.” When we hear this line from the end of today’s gospel, it’s easy
to hear it being addressed to other people who are richer than us, in part
because we all know someone who has more money than us. Yet, the alert that
Jesus is sending to us is not dependent on our current income level but what gets
our time, energy, and attention, and thus it applies to all of us. I find this wisdom
saying helpful because it first implies that all of us struggle with the everyday
concerns of providing for our basic needs and planning for a secure future. Christ
reminds us to stay focused on God and to what he is calling us to be because he
always a more stable and lasting presence in our lives than any job, mutual fund,
or material good could ever furnish. This teaching of Jesus also ties into the Uniting
in Heart 2030 Pastoral Plan, which is calling us back to emphasize the daily living
of our faith and sharing it out in the world. As Catholics, we can easily equivocate
our faith with what happens at the church building. The reality is that the vast
majority of our time is spent away from any parish structure. Obviously our
buildings are important especially for our sacramental life, but unless we stay
focused on how we live and share our faith away from these buildings, what we
do inside of them will be devoid of any real meaning or spiritual significance. In
other words, the Pastoral Plan is inviting us to remember that church is not a
building to which we go but first who we are to others as a people “rich in what
matters to God.”
