FROM THE COMMODORECOM. BRYAN BARLOW

DYC FOUNDATION UPDATEMARK LIFTER, PRESIDENT

We anticipate that 2012 will mark the operational launch of our Detroit Yacht Club Foundation. While a considerable amount of preparatorywork was done in latter half of 2011 and will continue early this year, we continue to await IRS approval of our 501(c)(3) status so that contribu-tions, gifts and bequests will enjoy tax-deductible status. Based on the IRS backlog of applications, our best guess is that we are about threemonths away from their review. So even though the Foundation Trustees (Ed Theisen, Jr., John Savage, Robin Heller, Paul Krietsch, SeanMurphy and myself) and our Advisory Board members are ready to start the engine, throw off the lines and depart the dock, our departure -- tocontinue the metaphor - needs to wait a bit longer.

In the meantime, our Advisory Board and volunteers have organized into four committees (Fund Development, Finance and Investments,Historic Preservation, Communications and Marketing) and continue to make progress in several important areas. Examples are the develop-ment of a Foundation mission statement, conceptual design of the DYCF website, drafting of a preliminary investment policy, inquiries to the Stateof Michigan on grant possibilities, and progress on formalization of content for educational tours of the Clubhouse. A Communications Plan hasbeen prepared and volunteers are stepping forward to help with development of the Foundation's logo.

After reviewing the Communications and Marketing Committee's recommendation for our mission statement and considering additional inputfrom our Advisory Board members and volunteers, the Trustees approved the following DYCF Mission Statement:

Other news items: Recently-elected DYC Board member Ron Gmeiner has been appointed by Com. Bryan Barlow as the DYC Board's liai-son to the Foundation's Advisory Board. Ron was an active member of the Advisory Board last year. David Lilly, Chair of the Communicationsand Marketing Committee, was named to the Advisory Board by the Foundation Trustees.

While establishing the Foundation is a significant effort which, at least for now, requires a fair amount of patience, it has great potential to pro-vide additional financial resources needed to preserve, restore and protect the great clubhouse now commemorated in our recently-installed his-toric plaque (remember to take a look at it if you haven't yet). When the Foundation is ready to accept donations and gifts, each DYC memberwill have an opportunity to help assure on a tax-advantaged basis that our wonderful facility will remain the treasure that it is for current and futuregenerations of members. 3

It is the mission of the Detroit Yacht Club Foundation to support the preservationof the historic DYC clubhouse and to facilitate educational opportunities that celebrate the historic nature of the Detroit Yacht Club.

It is late January and as I write this article, there is no snow on the ground. It almost feels warm enough to beearly spring boating weather. The holiday season has come and gone and the Christmas decorations and lightsare all boxed up and put away in the attic for another season. Thank you to Committee Chair, Erica Gray and tothe many, many volunteers who donated their time at the De-decorating party and made the work go smoothlyand quickly this year.

The 2012 DYC Officers' Ball was absolutely beautiful once again and continues to uphold its honorary title asthe best Yacht Club Officers Ball on all of the Great Lakes. A fun time was enjoyed by all who attended. PC TimColtman was the emcee and did a terrific job. Thanks to Executive Chef Ken and his culinary crew, dinner wastruly outstanding. A well deserved thank you also goes out to Crystal Moses, our Banquet Director, for the out-standing dining services. There was an assortment of fun music for members and guests of all ages 18 to 80,and everyone danced the night away to the music of Steve King and the Dittilies. Thank you to our CateringDirector Jennifer McDonnell and Catering Manager Carly Roberts-Borgula for all of their support in making thisevent such a success. I would like to extend a very special thank you to First Lady Linda for all of her time, effortand special attention to detail that she put forth for this year's Officers Ball, making it a truly memorable eveningfor everyone.

Vice Commodore Scott Allen has been very hard at work replacing showers, installing new tile and plumbingfixtures and assuring a steady flow of hot water in the ladies' locker room. Member Greg Huskin and Commodore Allen have been doing themajority of the tile work themselves in the evenings after work and on Saturdays and Sundays. The mystery of why there was never any hot waterin the ladies' locker room has been permanently solved and fixed as well. The adjacent sitting area by the ladies' sauna will also get a face liftwith a new granite counter top, vanity mirror lighting, new suspended ceiling, recessed lighting and possibly new carpet depending on the remain-ing funds. These projects were made possible by several fund raising efforts including very gracious donations by the First Ladies Club and byFirst Lady Daryl Dawes herself.

Another much needed and long overdue project was the cosmetic updating of the coat check room off of the main lobby. DYC SeagullsPresident, Mary Ellen McIntyre and her group took on this project and funded new carpeting in the entire coat check room, the hallway to theback offices and the adjacent ladies' sitting area. What a noticeable improvement. It really looks great. First Lady Linda Barlow helped finish offthe project by donating a new granite counter top for the coat check room to replace the old, damaged Formica top. Thank you, Rich Booms andBooms Stone Company for the discounted granite. Also, thank you to Joann Leo, Decorating Committee chair person, for all of her hard workand time spent on both of these projects. If you have an opportunity, please check out the progress in the ladies' locker room and the coat checkroom and see how nice these improvements are. All donations from member Craig Lamm's 87' Burger Yacht cocktail and hors d'oeuvres ride, onthe upcoming DYC Florida trip in Ft. Lauderdale, will go towards a specific ladies' locker room project as well.

There are several fun events planned every weekend in the month of February and March, so check your Main Sheet publication and read theweekly DYC eblasts. Winterfest is Saturday, February 4th. Mark your calendars and pray for cold weather so the kids can skate on the new icerink in Starlight Circle and ice fish in the lagoon. Remember the popular Lobsterfest? It's coming back in March. See you at the DYC.

Sincerely,Bryan Barlow Commodore

The Crawford-Armstrong Handicapped Association (CAHA) has hosted two majorevents at the DYC for the past 34 years. These events benefit more than 800 physi-cally & mentally challenged adults from Metro Detroit Area group homes each year. These two events are a fundraiser held each spring (Butterfly Sunday) and in June, aday filled with boat rides, picnic, music, clowns and much more (Fun Day in the Sun).

Butterfly Sunday is held May 20th and offers a silent auction and hourly raffles toraise the funds needed for hosting Fun Day in June. Your donations of auction itemswill help ensure a successful fundraiser.

Fun Day in the Sun is on June 23 and is devoted to providing a day filled withboat rides, a picnic, clowns and much more to give our guests (from the group homes)a special day just for their enjoyment. Volunteers are needed to assist the CAHAmembers to serve food, assist with life jackets, and guiding groups to the boats. It isa touching experience for everyone.

Our commitment to give back to the community in this way by hosting ButterflySunday and Fun Day has not only brought great satisfaction to all involved but hasgiven endless delight to our physically & mentally challenged guests.

For information on how you can become involved, please become a member ofCAHA, donate money or auction items, or volunteer your time, or do all three. Weappreciate all of your support..

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGERPAUL HUGHES

FROM THE SECRETARYJAMES GIERLACH

Wow. February already. Goodnews from January:

Grinch Day (holiday de-decorat-ing) was a smashing success andwas completed in near record time. Thanks to all that participated. Many people spent time at the clubin January, justifying the hours ofoperation and supporting the manyevents and activities we have tooffer.

The Officer's Ball was extremelywell done and well attended. The staff and all involved did afantastic job orchestrating this magnificent event.

The ladies' locker room and coat check areas are undergo-ing a beautiful transformation. Thank you to Sea Gulls, LindaBarlow, Commodore Allen and Greg Huskin.Engineering and construction specifications are under way forthe new grand staircase from the Boardwalk to the second floorveranda. We will be pursuing contractor bids in the near future. Our catering department's Auto Show business was a smash-ing success (and profitable too). Great job, everyone.

Our membership count is higher than this time last year. The Hydroplane Fundraising Event Committee has had two

meetings, and is well on their way to staging another wildly suc-cessful event.

The Board approved a proposal for DYC to host a classic sail boat regatta on Saturday June 16. Details to follow.Commodore Hommel organized a charter fishing day/tourna-ment for this year's club trip to Ft. Lauderdale. This is sure tobe a winner.

The ice rink in Starlight Circle is getting some use. We justneed a little more snow for the fort.

Winterfest is on Saturday, February 4th, Super Bowl Sundayis February 5th and the Cobo Boat Show is February 11th thru19th. We will have Signature Night with Chef Ken's best cre-ations and Dal Bouey for your listening pleasure on SaturdayFebruary 25th.

Only two months untilSpring, and we are headinginto a busy season with greatmomentum. The Club hasbeen busier than usual thiswinter, and we appreciate allof you very much for comingdown during these coldmonths. The staff and man-agement have been very busywith auto show and off-sitecatering events in January, and this has kept the staffconsistent, engaged andproud.

As for the management team, I feel compelled to report that ourCFO; Marty Agnello was swooped away to another organizationand has left the club from a full time basis. Marty made a toughdecision moving to another opportunity that simply works betterfor his family life. Marty gave me plenty of notice and leaves withthe utmost professional manner that could be expected. I amhappy to report that during this transition period, Marty will con-tinue to support us on a part time basis as needed and has com-mitted to helping us with anything we need in the interim. I wantto thank Marty for all his hard work in rebuilding our accountingdepartment.

Our search for a qualified CFO has gone quite well so far withmuch competition for the position and I am happy to report I amconfident in filling the position soon. If you have specific ques-tions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me personally to dis-cuss.

If you have not checked out the many different promotions inthe bar and grill, you are missing some great opportunities suchas Wine and Dine for Two, burger and beer night, and RedWings jersey night. We have seen a fantastic response on thesenights in what normally is a very slow time. Get down to the cluband support us as we are a 12 month operating club - whichmost cannot boast. Don't forget, Winterfest will be bigger thanever - February 4th - all day.

See you at the club, Paul

you planted this Fall when they began to sprout in lateDecember and early January? You are not alone. In a recentcall to Flower Power, the company we use for the GardenClub Bulb sale, we were told that the three-inch sprouts woulddie back and grow again in the Spring. But some plants, likethe Tall Dutch Irises would benefit from a layer of mulch toprotect them until Spring. Flower Power is located inBurlington, Vermont and they are experiencing the sameweather we are, including very little snow, at least at the timethis article was written.

DYC BOATERS & FISHERMANDEEP SEA FISHING IN FORT LAUDERDALE

As part of the DYC Winter Rendezvous, March 1st to March 6th, we are planning a deepsea fishing trip for March 2 - about 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. We have four boats lined up and eachboat can take up to six fishermen. Boats are in the 45' to 53' range with proven equipment andcapability. We will be fishing for Sailfish, Wahoo, Barracuda, Dolphin, Shark, Marlin, Tuna andKingfish, depending on what is hitting at that time and the recommendations of the Captains. The nice thing about deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale is you do not have to go very far offshore to find deep water and fishwandering out of the Gulf Stream.

If there is interest, I would like to organize a tournament where we each contribute $50 to a pool and award cash prizesfor most fish, largest fish, most exotic fish, etc. Maybe three prizes. Commodore Bryan will present these awards at the LYCdinner that evening.

Cost will not exceed $150 per person, plus whatever is decided on a tournament. This includesbeer and a sandwich. If there is a refund, it will be small and it is suggested it go to the Ladies LockerRoom fund.

The fishing is good right now and by March the sharks will be running and the sailfish are still here. EarlyMarch is still well within the high season, so boats will be booked weeks

ahead of time, which requires a deposit. • To confirm a spot, send me a check for $150 as soon as possible• If you are not sure but inclined to want to go, let me know that also
