Step Across the Border is the title of a film made by guitarist Fred Frith in 1990.
A full three years before the first edition of the November Music festival! A
quarter of a century has passed but the phrase still describes November Music.
While disregarding boundaries and genres, it has a passion for music made
by people who matter, such as Arvo Pärt and Helmut Lachenmann. These
are two of modern music’s biggest names. They sound different but may have
more in common than many think. There is also the internationally renowned
Asko|Schönberg, our ensemble in residence, which plays no fewer than four
concerts. Florian Magnus Maier and Wilbert Bulsink are this year’s composers
in focus who are fond of breaking through musical boundaries; each in their
own way. Both Wende and Julia Holter put a whole new slant on (rock) songs.
Accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen and the Raggaze Quartet also refuse to be
confined to a particular genre. Naturally, Fred Frith continues to think out of the
box after all these years. At the festival, he collaborates with the Zwerm guitar
quartet. And this is merely a tiny sample of November Music 2015’s wonderful
programme. So don’t be afraid to ‘step across the border’! Visit the festival,
meet interesting people, and enjoy their music. You’re very welcome.

WENDE has straddled the territories of rock and classical music for years.
As she works on her new album she continues her journey of exploration.
Exclusively for November Music, she provides a foretaste of what’s in store
in collaboration with the Red Limo String Quartet and guitarist Maarten
van Damme. Dark and mesmerizing songs in adventurous arrangements.
*On Sunday 8 November, WENDE sings a new version of the famous
Winterreise, created by composer Boudewijn Tarenskeen, with pianist
Gerard Bouwhuis (see page 25).

Thursday 5 Nov A day with Helmut Lachenmann A day with Helmut Lachenmann Thursday 5 Nov
The German composer Helmut Lachenmann is famous for his idiosyncratic
and unique style of composing, referred to as Musique Concrète Instrumentale.
His consummate expressiveness has influenced numerous young composers.
A day with Helmut Lachenmann features string quartets, one-off musical
collaborations, an orchestral work, and his ‘greatest hits’.
Nothing beats a composer who speaks for himself. Therefore, Helmut
Lachenmann takes his place at the piano to play his own solo pieces. Also
present is his partner, the pianist Yukiko Sugawara, who performs the stunning
Serynade as well as new works by the Flemish composer Frederick Neyrinck.
Guitarists Aart Strootman and Seth Josel tackle Salut für Caudwell. Not an
ordinary guitar duet but an unalloyed Lachenmann journey,t incorporating
sounds, words, and gestures. Fie Schouten (clarinet), Eva van de Poll (cello),
and Keiko Shichijo (piano) throw themselves into the six-part expressionist
Allegro Sostenuto, an utter masterpiece.
The eminent French string quartet Diotima performs Lachenmann’s
breathtaking round dance Reigen seliger Geister as well as the effervescent
Grido. Dutch composer Wilbert Bulsink has written his very first string
quartet for Diotima. A real challenge, inspired by Lachenmann’s sensual
and variegated experimental sound universe.
philharmonie zuidnederland pays tribute to Helmut Lachenmann, one
of Germany’s most avant-garde composers. An absolute highlight is the
performance of his masterpiece Accanto (1975-76) for solo clarinet, orchestra,
and tape. Lachenmann has taken Mozart’s popular Clarinet Concerto
as his point of departure but the comparison stops here. Solo clarinettist
Nina Janssen- Deinzer is the heroine of the piece. On top of this, a spanking
new orchestral work by composer Yannis Kyriakides who approaches
Lachenmann’s voice from a unique viewpoint in Der Komponist.

Once every so often, a jazz musician comes along who is capable of
setting new standards. ‘One of the primary voices in 21st-century jazz,’ was
Downbeat’s verdict on the American trumpet player Ambrose Akinmusire.
November Music combines his quartet with the open-minded adventurers of
the Dutch Lunatree ensemble, who take pleasure in creating accurate and
emphatic cross-pollinations between contemporary music, rock, and jazz.
The atmospheric and sensuous compositions on Akinmusire’s recent CD,
The Imagined Savior is Far Easier to Paint (released by Blue Note Records)
are arranged afresh, specifically for this occasion.
*Ambrose Akinmusire can also be seen and heard during
Colours of Improvisation on Friday (see page 16).

One of Europe’s prominent string quartets plays two contemporary classics.
The French Diotima Quartet performs Ligeti’s Second String Quartet as well
as Arnold Schönberg’s Third String Quartet, a textbook example of the clash
between Schönberg’s groundbreaking 12-tone ideas and the classical quartet
tradition. Plus, a new commissioned work by composer in focus Wilbert Bulsink
who took Lachenmann as his musical source of inspiration.

Private View is an opera that was inspired by Hitchcock’s films. It is as
suspenseful as an actual thriller. The audience observes the unfolding
events from the viewpoint of a peeping Tom who penetrates the lives of
others, in search of meaning. But are our eyes capable of telling the truth?
Annelies van Parys (Belgium) composed the music.
The video images were created by the 33 1/3 Collective.
‘In Private View, director Tom Creed beautifully merges voices,
colours, and characters.’ **** (Volkskrant)

presents the magisterial Graal Théâtre by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho.
An iridescent play of timbres for violin and orchestra. Joseph Puglia plays
the demanding solo violin part. This top-class New York musician will also

The yearly Colours of Improvisation night serves up a daring and variegated
three-course menu. Dutch jazz musicians throw in their lot with jazz luminaries
from Norway and the United States. The finale features one of the most exciting
piano trios that can be found anywhere.
A labyrinth of idiosyncratic
sounds unfolds deep into the
night in the Kruithuis vaults.

Ambrose Akinmusire & Theo Bleckmann & Harmen Fraanje Trumpet player Ambrose Akinmusire (US) is famous for connecting the dots
between modern jazz, rock, and contemporary composed music. Virtuoso
singer Theo Bleckmann (DE/US) often works with composers such as John
Zorn and Philip Glass. They are accompanied by the Dutch pianist Harmen
Fraanje.
Eric Vloeimans & Jon Balke Dutch trumpet player Eric Vloeimans’ wish list featured a collaboration with
Jon Balke. Tonight he meets the Norwegian pianist for the very first time at
Colours of Improvisation. Balke released several breathtaking albums on
ECM Records. He excels at combining East and West, acoustic-electronic
and composed-improvised.
Phronesis Fireworks are guaranteed when Phronesis comes to town. Bass player
Jasper Høiby (DK), pianist Ivo Naeme (GB), and drummer Anton Eger (NO/SE)
are virtuoso players, capable of creating irresistible grooves. According to the

treated to a form of ‘experience theatre’. performed by Nora Mulder, Koen
Kaptijn, Bas Wiegers, and Jacq Palinckx. Concert hall, shop, gallery, and

Pand7090 as ‘a place where everything fuses into a unique, wondrous, and
brilliant performance’. It earned them the Fringe Award 2014. Just like that.

The Danish composer Niels
Rønsholdt combines the power
of pure vocal rock music with
spicy contemporary music ideas.
He wrote his recent cycle Songs
of Doubt for the choir Studium
Chorale, ondes Martenot specialist
Nathalie Forget and singer
Roderik Povel.
There is a delicate blurring of boundaries in Dyane Donck’s broad-ranging
performance; between installation art and live concerts as well as between
acoustic and electronic music. String sounds and a quadraphonic electronic
soundtrack merge and reinforce each other, taking the audience to unexpected
domains with the help of Iris Bouwmeester’s sculptures and Ruud Terhaag’s
video imagery.

The legendary guitarist and
composer Fred Frith has dominated
art rock, radical improvisational
music, and contemporary
composed music for many years.
His list of awards is endless.
He regularly collaborates with
kindred spirits such as John Zorn,
Bill Laswell, and Brian Eno.
At November Music, he performs
alongside the Belgian/Dutch guitar
quartet Zwerm.
Composer, trumpet player and santoor player Amir ElSaffar seduces his
listeners as he takes them on a journey to faraway places that somehow seem
familiar. His ecstatic music combines the mysticism of Iraq’s classic maqam
tradition and western music. Elsaffar plays Ashwaaq, a composition for

The Two Rivers Ensemble (a sextet) produces spectacular and innovative
sounds. It merges the mysticism of Iraq’s classic maqam tradition with modern
jazz. Frontman is the trumpet player Amir ElSaffar (US). Some of the other
members of the ensemble have also made waves in the jazz and world music
scene, including drummer Nasheet Waits. According to The Wire, ‘Amir ElSaffar
is uniquely poised to reconcile jazz and Arabic music without doing either
harm’. November Music proudly presents the first concert in the Netherlands

The concept of blood as the ultimate source of life is fascinating to the
German/Dutch soprano Cora Schmeiser. The medieval abbess Hildegard
von Bingen described the blood’s spiritual chanting in the eponymous
hymn Vox Sanguinis. Cora Schmeiser’s interpretation manages to unite
contemporary music and age-old mysticism. With contributions by the
composers Aliona Yurtsevich, Boudewijn Tarenskeen, Giuliano Bracci,
Lukas Simonis and Kate Moore.

Julia Holter is one of today’s most electrifying rock artists. The 30-year old
American composer and vocalist occupies the territory between art rock,
ambient, avant-garde, and folk in an unparalleled way. Her alienating, dreamlike
songs appear to have their origins in film magician David Lynch’s phantom
universe. Not surprisingly, the trend-setting website Pitchfork invariably
labels her ground-breaking albums as ‘Best New Music’. At November Music,
Julia and her band play music from her new album Have You In My Wilderness
for the first time in the Netherlands.

The Finnish accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen combines folk, classical music,
and post-rock. As part of the closing concert, he plays Uniko with the Ragazze
Quartet and electronics specialist Samuli Kosminen.
Earlier, Pohjonen performed the piece with the Kronos Quartet. “Big waves
of sound build in complexity, animation and sometimes sheer frenzy,” according
to the New York Times. The ladies of the resourceful Dutch string quartet
Ragazze have been involved in several extraordinary projects at earlier editions
of November Music. For example with clarinettist Jörg Widmann and kemence
player Kayhan Kalhor.

Cycling or walking? Beautiful locations in the city centre open their doors so
visitors can attend various concerts that are part of the (by now) ‘traditional’
KunstmuziekRoute on Sunday afternoon. A single ticket - exchangeable for
a wristband on the day – gives access to more than 25 concerts. Compose
your own programme! To simplify this task, most concerts are performed
several times. The concerts have been allocated to themed routes which
are identified by an icon. These routes are not compulsory but are merely
meant as suggestions.

Artist-in-focus: WENDEFew vocalists have crossed over from the world of rock to other musical
universes with such determination. No wonder that WENDE is artist in focus
at November Music 2015. On 4 November, she sings with a string quartet.
On 8 November, she performs a new version of Winterreise, created by
composer Boudewijn Tarenskeen.
Every year, November Music puts the spotlight on specific composers,
makers, ensembles and/or performers who play a prominent part in
the Dutch music scene and have an affinity with the festival as they look
for new opportunities, refuse to stick to genres, and are unafraid to break
through boundaries.

Contributing to November Music
is an excellent way to promote the
extraordinary works of many Dutch
composers. Buma supports and fosters
contemporary music and jazz produced
by composers and lyricists from the
Netherlands.
The Dioraphte foundation supports highquality
art and cultural projects aimed at an
(inter)national audience. The November Music
festival can count on us to present (inter)
national music to the general public. Not in the
distant future but now. Because culture is a
treasure trove that should be widely shared.
