THE WORD

Prayer for Illumination

First Lesson Genesis 25:19-34

Psalm 119:105-112 Tone II.1

Antiphon sung first by the Cantor, thereafter by all and at [A]

105 Your word is a lantern to my feet * and a light upon my path.

106 I have sworn and am determined * to keep your righteous judgments.

107 I am deeply troubled; * preserve my life, O Lord, according to your word.

108 Accept, O Lord, the willing tribute of my lips, * and teach me your judgments.

109 My life is always in my hand, * yet I do not forget your law.

110 The wicked have set a trap for me; * but I have not strayed from your commandments.

111 Your decrees are my inheritance for ever; * truly, they are the joy of my heart.

112 I have applied my heart to fulfill your statutes * for ever and to the end. [A]

Second Lesson Romans 8:1-11

*Gradual Hymn 531 bulletin, p. 6 Seed, Scattered and Sown SEED SCATTERED

Gospel Reading Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

Sermon

*Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed Hymnal, Page 35 (front)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;

who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;

he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand

of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge

the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost;

the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;

the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body;

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo

(“Glory to God in the

Highest”) is a hymn of

praise developed from

Luke 2:14 (sung by the

angels to the shepherds

announcing Christ’s

birth).

The reader offers a

phrase to mark the end

of each reading, such as,

The Word of the Lord, or

Holy Wisdom, Holy Word.

The assembly responds,

Thanks be to God.

The hymn sung

immediately before the

reading of the Gospel is

called the Gradual, or

Gradual Hymn, which

refers to the step (Latin gradus) from which

it was chanted in

medieval church practice.

After the reading of the

Gospel the reader says,

The Gospel of the Lord.

The assembly responds,

Praise be to you, O

Christ.

Various forms of the

Apostles’ Creed were used from the second

century onward.

Prayers of the People

THE EUCHARIST

Offertory

Anthem Almighty God, Your Word Is Cast Roy Johnson

Almighty God, your word is cast like seed upon the ground,

now let the dew of heaven descend and righteous fruits abound.

Let not our selfishness and hate this holy seed remove,

but give it root in every heart to bring forth fruits of love.

Let not the world’s deceitful cares the rising plant destroy,

but let it yield a hundredfold the fruits of peace and joy.

*Prayer of Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise . . .

*The Lord’s Prayer Hymnal, p. 35 (front)

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Offertory Anthem was composed by Roy H. Johnson, Organist & Choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Tallahassee,

from 1960-1998, and is based on his hymn tune CALL STREET, composed for the Episcopal Hymnal 1982. The tune was named for

Tallahassee’s Call Street, which connected Roy’s two professional homes—the FSU College of Music, where he was Professor of

Theory and Composition, and St. John’s Church. It was sung and recorded by the choral scholars, each from his/her own home, via

the Apple Acapella application.
