SUNDAY FEBRUARY 25, 2018

From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ...

FEBRUARY 25, 2018

My Dear Friends, Today’s Gospel recalls the famous

“Transfiguration” of Jesus in front of His three favorite Apostles: Peter, the head of the Apostles; James, the first Bishop of Jerusalem; and John, the youngest, unmarried and the last surviving apostle. Jesus showed to these three followers His Heavenly Glory, as they, and we, will see in Paradise.

I suspect that with His Transfiguration, Jesus wanted to teach the three pillars of His community to stand fast during His short Passion and the three-day burial. But it was a miserable failure for Peter, who denied even having known Jesus, and James who led the rest of the twelve in running away from the Lord. Only John saved the day, sticking up for Jesus, even under the cross, and sustaining the Blessed Mother in that most tragic moment of her life. Let us follow the example of John, committing our souls to follow Jesus.

And now that we are fully into Lent, are you keeping up your Lenten resolutions to increase your prayer time and to do penance? Are you getting ready to celebrate Holy Week and to renew your commitment to Jesus at Easter, when we will have the renewal of our Baptism Promises? Let us not get discouraged when we fail to keep promises made to Jesus; after all, we are sinners! Let us star t anew to renew our commitment to Jesus; the past is past, what we have is the present. Let us live it fully with Jesus. If you miss a day of your chosen penance, just keep going; or maybe substitute another sacrifice, so that every day is a sacrificial day.

Love and understanding are gifts that another person freely gives to us. True love is unconditional. We depend on other people’s love from birth and all through our lifetime. The experience of being loved helps us to establish patterns of responding to others with love. As Christians, one way we experience God’s faithful love, goodness and mercy is in the faith we have received from our parents; in the total and unconditional gift of Paradise received in Baptism, in the all-embracing God received in the Eucharist, and in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

God’s mercy, expressed in the death of Jesus, helps us to see the greatness of God’s love and God’s willingness to forgive our sins. It is almost too good to believe! We are led to respond with a deep sense of joy and wonder. As St. Augustine prayed: “Our hearts were made for You and they shall not rest until they rest in You.” That is why we RENEW ourselves so often in life, and that is why every year Our Mother Church calls us to RENEW ourselves in the Holy Season of Lent. So that, after our death, we will reach Paradise, smiling at the Risen Lord in His Glory as did the three lucky apostles (Peter, James and John) who looked astonished at Him on that fabulous day of Transfiguration. Whenever we get discouraged or depressed, remember the Transfiguration and the Resurrection of Jesus, and let’s plow ahead toward Jesus through the cold, indifference and hostility of the Godless world. Let us be totally committed to Christ, every moment of our lives. Even when the power of the devil, which is pure

PSALTER WEEK II

evil, overpowers us and leaves us totally devastated, we must never forget Jesus’ words: “I have won.” The final victory is of Jesus and of us, his children! EVIL IS REAL, and we cannot win but with Jesus’ cross! Just think how sad we felt for the slaughter at a Florida High School!

Oftentimes, we think of the destitute, but we have another group of people needing our concern and ministry: the homebound and the senior members of our community of faith. Many of our people are often alone, afraid and lonely individuals who need people with whom to talk and to pray. These are the very people who occupied the pews in which you sit and worship every Sunday. People who are now constrained by physical disabilities and advancing age. It is important that we see to it that our seniors and homebound gain a sense of

belonging to the parish by visiting them, or making sure that there is someone to visit them. If you know of an elderly or shut-in who needs the comfort that our Christian Sacraments offer, contact the Parish Office.

Sometimes people are still asking: “Can a divorced person receive Holy Communion?” The answer is “YES”. Only people who marry or re-marry outside the church (that is without a Church Annulment) cannot usually receive Holy Communion. If in doubt, check with a priest.

Please remember to get your tickets for the annual Abraham’s Feast on Wednesday, March 14, at 6:00 p.m. Please join Rabbi Brenner Glickman, of Temple Emanu-El and Imam Mohamed Benkhaled, of the Islamic Society of Sarasota and Bradenton, to honor Abraham, the first man to whom God revealed His plan of salvation. The service, highlighting mutual respect and understanding, will be in Fr. Fausto Parish Center, followed by dinner. Tickets for the dinner are available in the Parish Office. (Tickets are at no cost, but donations are appreciated.)

Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto

FROM THE OFFICE OF OUR BISHOP: Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The weekend of February 24 and 25, 2018, the Diocese of Venice will take up a collection to benefit

the Black and Indian Mission Appeal. This Collection has for the last 131 years, changed the landscape of evangelization and education efforts for Native Americans, Alaskan Native Americans and African Americans throughout the United States. History tells us that lasting change to a community can come through faith, hope and charity.

Evangelization efforts by Churches and schools among African Americans, Native Americans, Eskimo and Aleut communities, are funded by the Collection's grant awards, which are instrumental in the building of their Christian communities. Your support has helped educate African American and Native American seminarians for priestly service to our Catholic communities. It has also helped begin a new religious community for service to Native Americans. This is just a few of the endeavors made possible.

Please be generous in the Black and Indian Mission Appeal and help strengthen the faith to those in need. Your support will truly make a difference. To Learn more about the Black and Indian Missions please go to www.blackandindianmission.org.

I take this opportunity to assure you and your families of my continued consideration as well as my prayers during this Lenten Season. Thank you for your generosity!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Frank J. Dewane Bishop f the Diocese of

Venice in Florida
