BYPASS SEPARATORS

In this scenario it is deemed acceptable not to treat the full flow, andwhere the worst pollutants will be carried off by the initial flow, forexample car parks, roadways and some commercial areas.

Once 10% of the peak flow rate is exceeded, the flow bypasses theseparation chamber and discharges directly into the drainage system.

ACO Q-Ceptor bypass oil separators aredesigned to treat 10% of the peak flowinto the unit. This 10% is known as thetreated flow. Flows in excess of this 10%are allowed to bypass the treatmentchamber.

Runoff entering the unit is retained withinthe treatment chamber for sufficient timeto allow the oil carried in it to float to thetop and for any silt in the water to settleto the bottom of the tank. The cleanwater remaining below the layer offloating oil discharges through the outlet.

The ACO Q-Ceptor bypass separator isdesigned with a bypass chamber aroundthe top of the unit that permits flows inexcess of the treated flow to bypass thetreatment chamber.

Bypass units are permitted in locationswhere the risk of pollution is low, and inparticular where the risk of a largevolume of pollution is low. The reasoningbehind this is that most rainfall in the UKis at an intensity of 0.0018 IIsm2 or less, and all runoff from this light rain will passthrough the treatment chamber.

In heavier rain, most of the pollution willbe carried by the initial first flush ofrunoff, which will all be treated. As aresult of this any pollution in the bypassflow at the peak of the storm will havebeen massively diluted.

ACO's design of bypass chamber ensuresthat no bypass will occur before thedesigned treated flow is reached.Thereafter, the treated flow will continueto pass through the unit, with excess flow(of up to 9 times the treated flow rate)allowed to bypass the treatment chamber.

ACO Q-Ceptor bypass oil separators areavailable to BS EN 858-1 :2002 Class 1or Class 2. When Class 1 effluent (betterthan 5 rng/l) is required, a coalescingfilter is fitted to the unit. Without thecoalescing filter the separators operate toClass 2 and achieve a treatment standardof better than 100 rng/l.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential toensure that a separator continues tooperate to its full design capabilitythroughout its working life. Thismaintenance includes monitoring the oiland silt levels, and removing anyaccumulated waste. Alarm systems arefitted to carry out this monitoring on acontinuous basis. BS EN 858-2:2003requires that a physical inspection musttake place at intervals of no more than 6months. The standard also requires thatevery five years the separator must beemptied and given a general inspection totest the integrity and performance of thesystem. The separator must be refilledwith clean water following such aninspection.

How to choose the correct size

ACO Q-Ceptor bypass separators shouldbe sized in accordance with the guidancein PPG3.

The appropriate size of separator iscalculated by applying a standard formulato the area to be treated. The preciseformula depends on whether a fullretention or bypass separator is to beused. In all cases the area to be drainedis referred to as A.

The Nominal Size (NS) is the flow rate, inlitres per second, which can be treated bythe unit to the specified standard, Class 1or Class 2. Bypass separators are referredto as NSB (Nominal Size Bypass).

Bypass separator chambers

Design Example 1:Sizing a bypass separator

Assume you have a car park of 3,000m'.This is area A.

The nominal size of a bypass separatorfor a catchment of area A (m') isobtained using the following formula:

NSB = 0.0018 x A

Applying this formula to the car park of3000m' gives a result of 5.4. Thereforethis car park would require a bypassseparator of size NSB6.

ACO Q-Ceptor bypass separators areavailable as Class 1 or Class 2performance types. They are alsoavailable with or without a samplingpump pre-fitted to the units.

ACO Q-Ceptor full retention oil separators treat thecomplete flow caused by rainfall up to 65mm perhour and where there is a high risk of contamination.

These separators hold the contaminated water for a period longenough to ensure that the lighter contaminates separate from thewater and rise above it within the separation chamber. Microparticles are collected and combine on the coalescing filter until theyare large enough to float free by themselves.

Full retention separators are used for example in vehicle maintenanceand refuelling areas or scrapyards.

~

ACO Q-Ceptor full retention oil separatorsare available to BS EN 858-1:2002Class 1 or Class 2. When Class 1 effluent(better than 5 mgll) is required, acoalescing filter is fitted to the unit. Thisfilter allows very small drops of oil that aretoo small to float upwards independentlyto coalesce into drops which are largeenough to float up into the retained oil.Without the coalescing filter the separatorsoperate to Class 2 and achieve a treatmentstandard of better than 100 mgll.

ACO full retention separators are fitted withan Automatic Closure Device (ACD). Thisis a float which is weighted so that it floatsin water but not in oil. The ACD ensuresthat if there is a large pollution event thatfills the oil capacity of the separator (or ifthe unit is not being regularly maintainedand the oil level builds up) then the outletof the unit is closed and the oil retained inthe unit cannot be washed out into theoutflow system.

How to choose the correct size

ACO Q-Ceptor full retention separatorsshould be sized in accordance with theguidance in PPG3.

Design Example 2:Sizing a full retention separator

Assume you have an HGV yard of 500m2.This is area A.

The nominaI size of a fu 11 retentionseparator for a catchment of area A (rn")is obtained using the following formula:

NS = 0.018 x A

Applying this formula to the HGV yard of500m2 gives a result of 9. Therefore thisyard wou Id require a fu 11 retentionseparator of size NSlO.

Aca Q-Ceptor alarm systems

BS EN 858-1 :2002 and the EnvironmentAgency's Pollution Prevention guidelines(PPG3) require that all oil separators mustbe fitted with an automatic alarm/warningdevice to provide visual and audiblewarning when the level of oil reaches 90%of the storage volume under static liquidlevel conditions, These alarms/warningdevices indicate that the separator is inneed of immediate emptying for it tocontinue to work effectively,

In order to meet this requirement, ACOoffer a full range of Pepperl + Fuchsvisual and audible electronic alarmsystems. The alarms are designed tocontinuously monitor the critical operatingconditions of the separator and provide awarning early enough to prevent anydischarge of pollutants into theenvironment. All the alarm systems canbe fitted either during installation andcommissioning of a new oil separator, orto existing installations.

The standard range of mains poweredanalogue alarm systems provides highlevels of environmental safety, is simple toinstall and provides an economical solutionwhere the necessary cabling and ductingcan be provided. To ensure precisemonitoring in any situation, all of thealarm systems can be fitted with up tothree sensor probes within the separatorfor oil, silt and high liquid levels.

Installation notes

This section provides general installation notes for ACa Q-Ceptorsthat should be followed before installation. These notes should beread together with the recommended installation detail shown inthe drawing on the following page.

Site conditions Flotation

These recommendations indicatethe requirements for installation ofACO Q-Ceptors in typical site conditions. The customer should ensure that therequirements for their particular siteconditions and anticipated loadings aremet, taking Engineering advice wherenecessary.

These recommendations assume that theunit is to be installed with a concretebackfill. Even with the minimumrecommended thickness of concrete, theunits, when empty, are vulnerable toflotation if the ground water level is high.Care must therefore be taken duringinstallation, and consideration given as towhether additional concrete should beprovided in wet locations.

R~

In lightly loaded situations, the units canbe installed without concrete backfill, using a suitable granular material asbackfill. However a concrete slab is likelyto be required over the unit and the unitwill be particularly vulnerable to flotationin grou ndwater. Engi neeri ng adviceshou Id be sought.

The ACO Q-Ceptor range of separators isEnvironment Agency compliant andconforms fully to the requirements ofPPG3. In addition, all ACO Q-Ceptorseparators have been designed andindependently tested to BS EN 858-1 :2002 and BS EN 858-2:2003. Thecustomer (or their client) is responsiblefor ensuring that the installation of theunit is in compliance with any regulatoryrequirements of the planning authorities,Building Control, Environment Agency,Water Company, national and Europeanstandards, etc.

Installation should only be carried outby an experienced and competentcontractor. Electrical work (e.g, alarms)must only be carried out by a suitablyqualified electrician.

Contractors are advised to obtain a copy of the full installation recommendations. To do so, please contactthe ACO Water Management Design Services Team

l. The customer shou Id ensu re that therequirements for their particular siteconditions are met, taking engineeringadvice where necessary. Theserecommendations assume that the unit isto be installed with a concrete backfill.

2. Lift using a forklift through the slotsunder the base or webbing slings fixedthrough the lifting holes on the sides of theunit. Do not lift the unit using slingsaround the bypass channel. Take care thatthe units do not tip during handling. Donot drag, drop or roll the units. Store theunits on firm level ground.

3. Excavate a hole to receive the unit, allowing for a minimum of 200mmthickness of concrete below and all aroundthe unit and with sufficient working spacefor the connection of pipework, ducts andvents. Any unsuitable ground is to beremoved and replaced. Engineering advicemay be necessary. The excavation is to bekept free of water.

4. All concrete used in the installation is tobe of minimum grade C15/20. Wherenecessary a higher specification ofconcrete may be required. Engineeringadvice should be sought. Pour a minimum200mm thickness of concrete onto thebase of the excavation, and whilst theconcrete is still wet carefully lower theseparator unit onto the concrete. Checkthat the unit is fully supported by the

concrete, is level and at the correct height.Check the orientation. Allow the concreteto harden.

5. Add 500mm depth of water to theinside of the unit. Carefully placeadditional concrete to the sides of the unitto a level between 400mm and 500mmabove the base of the unit. Do not usevibrating pokers. Check that the unit is stillcorrectly positioned and level. Allow thisconcrete to harden.

5. Add water to fill the unit to the invert ofthe outlet pipe. Carefully place additionalconcrete to the sides of the unit to a leveljust below the outlet pipe level, ensuringthere is sufficient room left for theinstallation of the pipework. Allow thisconcrete to harden.

7. Connect the inlet and outlet pipework, vent pipe and bypass access pipe. Thebypass separators have four possible pipediameter connections. Cut the connectionspigot at the appropriate location - see fullinstallation recommendations for furtherguidance. Using pipe diameters other thanthose stated in the brochure and guidancewill reduce the efficiency of the separator.

8. If an extension shaft is required, cut theshaft to the correct length and fit it to thetop of the unit with sealant 8- 10mm thick.

Check the level of the inlet and outletpipes and add approximately 500mm ofwater to the chamber. Haunch withbetween 400mm and 500mm ofconcrete. Once completed, check levels.Allow concrete to harden.

Step 6:

Fit extension shaft if required and cut tocorrect height, using sealant to ensure awatertight joint between the shaft and theseparator. Complete fitti ng of thesampling pump hose (if required). Backfillwith concrete in 500mm steps, allowingconcrete to harden between pours. Bracethe inside of the extension shaft ifnecessary to avoid distortion during theconcrete pours. Continue until finalconcrete level is reached (just belowunderside of cover frame).
