Parish Town Hall Meeting All parishioners are invited and strongly encouraged to attend this important meeting on Sunday, July 25, after the 8:30 am Mass. The purpose of this meeting is for us to discuss several important projects at the parish that need our attention, with voting on which projects you would like to address first. As a preview, there are three primary projects that need attention- we need to discuss the lighting system in the Church which is falling into disrepair; we need to discuss the creation and installation of a religious symbol or image on the upper front exterior wall of the Church; and we need to discuss reinstallation of our stained glass windows somewhere in the Church. Please plan to join us for this conversation about the needs of the parish while enjoying refreshments and goodies.
Funeral Luncheons We are able to provide funeral luncheons thanks to the dedicated volunteers who share their time & talent to serve others. Various tasks include picking up supplies, setting up tables, preparing food, providing desserts, serving the luncheon and cleaning up when it is done. Please contact one of our volunteer coordinators Sue Bahr at 353-6008 or Laura Swartz at 226-3563 to help.
We would like to offer a big THANK YOU to the men and women who make this important service possible for our parish!

From the Desk of Father Steve: Frequently Asked Questions on Faith
Last weekend, a question was asked about the Catholic Church’s teaching on
marriage annulments, and specifically, what an annulment is, and whether it is just the
Catholic name for divorce. I then spent the rest of the article talking about the definition
of marriage. I’d like to continue that subject today.
In review, we said last week that marriage is defined as follows: “The matrimonial
covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of
the whole of life and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses and the
procreation and education of offspring, has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity
of a sacrament between the baptized.” I then stated that this definition flows from our
Creator, and that it applies to all marriages, not just Christian marriages. So, the definition above applies to
Christians and non-Christians alike- those who are baptized, those who are not baptized, Christians, Buddhists,
Hindus, Muslims, atheists, it doesn’t matter. This definition comes not from us as human beings, but flows
from how God has made us as human beings. He has made men and women to be in an exclusive partnership
of life and love that has as its goal the mutual help and good of the spouses and the procreation and education
of children. I cannot emphasize enough how critically important it is for us to understand that marriage as we
know it is not just a “Catholic” thing; marriage is a human thing, created by God when He created man and
woman, which is written into our very human nature. This institution of marriage is then raised to the level of
a sacrament when it is celebrated between two baptized persons.
Okay, so we know now how marriage is defined; but how does a marriage bond come about? It
comes about through an exchange of marital consent. It comes about when a man and a woman choose to
give themselves, through an act of their will, to each other in a lifelong covenant. This marital consent is
what makes marriage, and it is strictly and absolutely required for a true and binding marriage to come into
existence. Men and women, created in the image and likeness of God, have been entrusted by God with the
power to make choices, and to exercise their will freely. God desires that we choose to use that power of our
free will to make choices in accordance with what is good and true. In marriage, a man and a woman make a
free choice, an act of their will, to choose to give themselves to their spouse in a way that is free, total, faithful
and fruitful. Through marital consent, a specific man chooses a specific woman and vice versa, and each give
themselves totally to the other, so that the two may become one.
The Church defines “marital consent” as follows: “Matrimonial consent is an act of the will by which a
man and a woman mutually give and accept each other through an irrevocable covenant in order to establish
marriage.” This is what happens at the moment of the exchange of vows during a marriage. A man and
woman exchange free consent to bind themselves to the other in a lifelong and indissoluble (unbreakable)
bond for the sake of their mutual good and to raise a family. So, marriage is, at its most basic level, a contract
between a man and a woman. It is certainly more than just a contract, but it is still a contract. It’s a free
agreement between one man and one woman to bind themselves to each other in the covenant of marriage. By
doing so, they also exclude anyone and everyone else. Because of this, no one else is able to provide the
required consent other than the parties to the marriage themselves- the man and the woman who are choosing
to enter into marriage. No one can be forced to enter into marriage, and no one can forcibly enter into marriage
on someone else’s behalf; it is only through a legitimate exercise of one’s own free will by which one chooses
to enter into the bond of marriage that a true marriage bond can come into existence.
By the way, the same is true for a man to be ordained a priest- it must be demonstrated beyond a
reasonable doubt that he is freely choosing to enter into the priesthood, that he is not being forced or coerced
in any way, but that he is making an informed decision and exercising his free will to choose to be ordained a
priest. The call to the priesthood comes from God, but the choice to accept and respond to that call remains in
the power of the individual man. Next week, we’ll talk more about marital consent.
God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

COMING HOME BASKET
The basket sitting on the display rack near the choir steps is a “Coming Home Basket.” If you know of someone who has drifted away from
their Catholic faith, write their name on one of the sheets provided, fold it, and place it in the basket. As a faith community we are encouraged to pray for the people whose names have been placed in the coming home basket and encourage those we are aware of to return.
Cinnamon Roll Sale We will have two students selling cinnamon rolls after Mass on Sunday, July 18th. You decide the value of these delicious rolls with a your donation. All proceeds will assist them in attending the Diocesan Mission trip/Camp Survive.
