The Civil War: The Battle of Antietam (the bloodiest single day battle in American History) influenced Mann to take shots of fields where battles occurred. She felt it gave an eerie and spiritual appearance.

She took photos of the sight where Emmett Till was murdered. She also was influenced by other fields, landscapes and aging

mansions in the South She used collodion on her lenses to make her negatives have

an ancient/aged look. Collodion was used in the Civil War to hold wounds together.
