DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
is always celebrated the first Sunday after Easter.
Divine Mercy Prayer Service 2:30pm, Sunday, April 8
in Church.
Our Lord revealed to Saint Faustina His de-sire to literally flood us with His graces on that day. He told her: "One that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. The soul that will go to Confession and receive
Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. Check out websites dedicated to the Divine Mercy to read the powerful promises and the revelations made to St. Faustina
In preparation, Msgr. Tony invites you to join us for “THE ORIGI-NAL IMAGE OF THE DIVINE MERCY” - a documentary film shown on Wednesday, April 19, 7pm at the Glendale Theater, 6102 N. Rural St. St. Barnabas has 20 group tickets availa-ble for purchase at $10 each. Contact Patty Cain, or the church office, for more information.
This film tells the previously-unknown history of the original mas-terpiece commissioned by St. Faustina through a series of inter-views with key witnesses and individuals intimately connected to the epic adventure of the greatest manmade work of art.
Second collection for the solidarity fund for the CHURCH IN AFRICA next Sunday, April 8th. The people of Africa are joyous and faith-filled, but they also often face challenges due to poverty, the high
incidence of disease, food shortages, and migration. This collection is an opportunity to stand with the
people of Africa and support pastoral projects that are so needed on this continent. Please be generous.

SUNDAY, APRIL 8TH REACHING OUT SUNDAY
STOP BY THE TABLES
Debbie Miller, founder of HEALING HIDDEN HURTS,
a nonprofit Christ-centered ministry for women wounded by abortion, will have a booth at St. Barnabas after all the Masses on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8. Debbie will be seeking prayer support and donations for the ministry, and will also be available for private consultation. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF JOHN-SON COUNTY is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. They are dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, reha-bilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the con-viction that every man, woman and child should have a sim-ple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.

We joyfully welcome those who received the
Sacraments of Initiation and those who, already one
with us in Baptism, completed the Sacraments of
Initiation. Thank you to the entire St. Barnabas
Community whose witness and prayer support led
them to full reception into the Catholic Church.
EASTER celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
It is the most important feast in the Christian calendar.
THE WORD EASTER comes from Ishtar, the
Babylonian goddess of love and fertility, also known
as Astarte. Astarte became the Anglo-Saxon Ostara,
goddess of fertility, spring, and dawn. Easter gradually
came to absorb various pagan springtime celebrations
and symbols.
The custom of a SUNRISE SERVICE on Easter
Sunday can be traced to ancient spring festivals that
celebrated the rising sun. Early people attributed to
the sun a great power because it dispelled darkness
and brought the new day. Christ has dispelled the
darkness of evil and sin, to bring a new day of truth
and life.
NEW CLOTHES worn on Easter are a symbol
of new life. The custom comes from the baptism on
Easter Sunday of early Christians who were led into
church wearing new robes of white linen.
EASTER BASKETS Creating baskets arose from
the Catholic custom of bringing Easter dinner food to
mass to be blessed. This custom may also be related
to ancient agrarian customs of bringing first crops to
the temple in baskets.
THE EASTER BUNNY Hares and rabbits
served our pre-Christian ancestors as symbols of
fertility. They were kept in the homes and given as
presents at the beginning of spring. The rabbit later
replaced the hare and first appeared as an Easter
symbol. This ancient custom developed the story of
the “Easter Bunny” in Germany in the 15th century.
The first edible Easter bunnies, made of pastry and
sugar, were also produced in Germany during the
early 1800’s. German settlers later brought the custom
to North America. The bunny has no deep meaning,
nor any religious background.
EASTER EGGS were originally painted with
bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring. In
ancient times, eggs were a symbol of spring and
fertility. An egg seems dead and yet contains new
life, as does the earth at the end of winter. This is the
reason why people in pre-Christian ages presented
each other with eggs at the beginning of spring. In
those days, it was also the beginning of the new year.
In medieval times, the eating of eggs was prohibited
during Lent. Instead of representing fertility, the
Easter egg now became a symbol of the rock tomb,
out of which our Lord gloriously emerged to the new
life of His Resurrection.
