WOW!How awesome are your communities, Jacob the places where you gather,
Israel!
WOW!How awesome it is that we are all here
together today!
In English we often call our prayer space a “Synagogue” or ‘Temple.” You may also have heard someone use the Yiddush word “shul.” In Hebrew, in addition to , synagogue,
there is also the phrase, n, from Sefer Beresheet when Avraham created a prayer space to pray to God.nrefers to a holy place that is separate and unique. As we enter this n we
join our community to pray together.
As we come together as a Kehillah Kedusha, a Sacred Community,
to welcome the New Year, we take a moment
to greet and welcome each other into our Makom Kadosh, Sacred Space.
nJ
Have a Happy and a Sweet New Year!

As we begin our morning as a community, we focus on our
blessings in life. These blessings focus both on our individual
opportunities to continue God’s work as well as our communal responsibility to be partners
with God.
The New Year begins with gratitude and thanks for the many opportunities we have in our lives.

Thank You God... Because You spoke and the
world was created!Blessed are You God, the One:
Who creates.Who speaks and Who does.
Whose devotion fills the world.Whose compassion fills all lives with good.
Whose partnership with the world will protect and sustain us.
Bless God’s name forever!
r rC reminds us that the world will be improved by the
actions we take. As we kiss our tzitzit at the end of this blessing, we are reminded of the mitzvot we have in our lives and actions we must take to strengthen the partnership we create with God.
We are constantly searching for reminders of our partnership with God.
By holding our tzizit, the fringes of our tallit, during Barukh Sheamar, we create another pause
in our morning to remember and be grateful for what makes our lives holy and unique.

r-Happy!Happy are those people who live in Your house,
They will sing Your praises forever.
People like this are happy! People who partner with God are happy!
Ashrei uses every letter of the alphabet to praise God. We
know in our lives that the words we say can profoundly affect others. This tefillah reminds us that the words we choose are
very powerful!
As the New Year begins, we recognize our partnership with God with joy and happiness.

God, You protect all who love You, and keep us safe from evil.
We bless God now and forever. Halleluyah!

Every day we make choices that define who we are and what we believe: Do we take time to help others? Do we rush to work or
school? These challenges, just like the challenge for Israel as they approached the sea, take faith,
courage and conviction.
Moses and the Israelites sang this song of celebration after they crossed the Sea of Reeds.
We sing songs to God Who has won the battle.
The Egyptian horses and riders were pushed back by the water.
My God, God of my ancestors, thank You!
With You, we beat the Egyptian army.Your power, God, has shattered the enemy.

God, our ruler: You sit in Your holy place,
Your holy name blessed forever.
You are thanked by honest people.
You are blessed by the words of the tzadikim.
You are cheered as being holy by the faithful.
You are praised by the Kedoshim -- holy people!
In the book of Proverbs from the TaNakH we learn that a tzadik is described as someone who “falls
seven times, and rises again.” (Proverbs 24:16) We learn from this that a tzadik, acts on what he or
she believes and does not give up despite the challenge.
Words are often not enough to describe our relationship with God.
Throughout the Mahzor the poets of our tradition describe our relationship with God through many different titles.
Here we call God melekh -- king.

A new light will shine through Zion --We look forward to enjoying the warmth of
this new light!
Blessed are You, God, who creates light!
Light is one way we describe God. We don’t see light, rather, we see rays of light bouncing off of other things in the world. In many ways this can describe our relationship with God. We don’t see God, but we see God’s presence “bouncing”
off of aspects of our life.
In Or Hadash we celebrate both the physical connection to Zion -- Jerusalem --
and the spiritual ideal we look to create in Israel.

God, You have shown us love like a caring parent.
Please be our teacher, too. Help us to understand our
relationship with You.
In Ahavah Rabbah we celebrate the opportunity to teach our traditions to
our children.
In the earliest prayer services from our tradition the 10 Commandments were read at this point.
The rabbis became concerned that the community would forget the breadth of the Torah and only focus on these 10 mitzvot so Ahava Rabbah, a prayer that stresses
the importance of learning and performing mitzvot, was added into the service.

You gather the four corners of the world in peaceYou have chosen us from all the nations in the
world and brought us near to You. Blessed are You, God, who has chosen the Israelite people with love.
Hear! Listen! Israel: God is our God, God is One!
Praise God’s name Whose honor and presence is with us now and forever. You should love God
With all of your thoughts With all of your feelings
And with all of your actions. And these words that I command you today, must always be in your heart. Instruct these commandments to your
children and speak of them when you are sitting at home, when you are traveling on a path,
when you go to sleep, and when you wake up. Attach a symbol of your partnership with God on your arm and between your eyes and write this reminder on
the door-posts of your houses and on your gates.
It is sometimes very hard to describe “love.” We can describe what we love or how we show love, but the feeling
itself is often an indescribable emotion. When the Shema challenges us to love God, the text does not define what this love is. Instead the Shema gives us a road map to form this type of powerful
relationship in our lives.

God spoke to Moshe and told him to tell Israel to put Tzitziot on their clothes so that
they would remember the mitzvot that partner us, B’nai Yisrael, with God.
There are many ways to define the word “mitzvah;” commandment, good deed,
requirement or law. By translating “mitzvah,” as opportunity we
recognize the partnership that we share with God.
What is a mitzvah?Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel taught
that a Mitzvah is a prayer in action.

The Israelites at the Sea sang:Who is like You God?
Who is as holy as You are?You are awesome and powerful!
Singing a new song, we stand and say:God, You will be with us forever!
Rock of Israel, blessed are Youfor helping us, Israel!
Before we sing the Amidah we stand like the Israelites at the
Sea of Reeds, looking forward to what will happen next.

It’s not easy to pray. Before we begin the Amidah,
we ask God for help...
God, let me find the words to begin my Tefillah with You.
Blessed are You, God!God of Avraham,God of YitzhakGod of Ya’akovGod of SarahGod of Rivkah
God of Rahel andGod of Leah
nAs I begin this prayer with you God, I am inspired by the teachings of our tradition and search for the wisdom to begin this conversation with You.
, God.
God! Remember us with life.
We learn from the Torah and are reminded in the Amidah
that Avraham, Sarah and all of our ancestors created personal relationships with God. The last
paragraph of the Amidah reminds us that we too can create a
personal relationship with God!
Write us into the Book of Life!
Blessed are You, God, who protects Avraham
and Sarah.

Today is a very important and holy day.
On Yom Kippur we remember our partnership with You, how You rule in our lives and the
truth and ideals You represent.
You help us determine how we will be remembered for all that we have and will do…
On Rosh Hashanah it is written and on Yom Kippur it is sealed.
By asking for forgiveness, prayer and acts of righteousness we will transform the world.
Tradition teaches that the Untaneh Tokef was written as a declaration of faith in the 900’s CE by a person who was condemned to die for
not abandoning his beliefs. By repeating this declaration we too declare our faith in God.

We bow to You, God, to say thank You for Your partnership.
This is our God, there is no other as it is written in the Torah.
In its original form, Aleinu was only said during the Yom Kippur Service. Our rabbis
wanted to give a similar level of kedusha, holiness, to all of our services throughout the year, so Alienu was included at the
conclusion of all services.

Kaddish Yatom, Mourner’s Kaddish is said by loved ones for people who have died in the
last year and on their Yartzeits--the yearly memorial of their deaths.
Everyone in the kehillah, the community, helps to say the
Mourner’s Kaddish, but only the mourner stands.
The mourner stands so that the community can recognize who needs extra attention and love.
Other ways we can help the mourner say Mourner’s Kaddish:
▪Please don’t talk.
▪The community’s line starts with “±“ --be sure to say that line in a strong and
supportive way
▪If the mourner is new to your community, be sure to comfort him or her and welcome him or her to our kehillah.
