MISSIONARY: ROBERT AND MEREDITH LANE LOCATION: SUDAN

Robert and Maridith Lane took a major risk when they moved to South Sudan, a battleground nation in northeast Africa. But they see it as a risk worth taking. When the Lanes first visited in 2010, their hearts became burdened for the more than 400,000 people unreached by the Gospel in South Sudan, which became independent of Sudan in 2011. They came back for good in 2013. Now, the Lanes and their missionary teammates are learning to live a life more difficult than they ever imagined as they

reach out to the Dinka Rek people group, who number nearly 3 million. “We need to be ready for those hardships, ready for those difficulties, ready to be used as a sacrifice for Christ as we try to make His name famous,” Robert said. “The Dinka are very strong and proud. In tradition, they’re extremely warlike. They say, ‘We hate our enemy, we hate this other people group, we hate people who try to take anything from us or keep us from political power.'” However, the Lanes have no doubt South Sudan is where God has called them. Getting into the country is usually difficult, but they’ve been able to gain access, set up a house and build relationships with local people in a short period of time. “It’s not been easy by any stretch of the imagination,” Rob-ert said. “But in a lot of ways we’ve been able to do something that should really be impossible, and I see that as a very big confirmation of God’s will to have us in South Sudan.” They stay there with the Lord’s help, the support of their missionary co-workers — and Southern Baptists’ prayers and giving through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and the Cooperative Program.

MISSIONARY: JEFF AND LIESA HOLEMAN LOCATION: OAXACA, MEXICO

A student minister at heart, Jeff realizes the impact short-term missions can make. "God uses short-term missions to open our minds and hearts about what it means to be available to God and to question, 'Why am I here?'" he said. "We were created to make Him known. Our role is making His name known around the world. Obedience is asking, 'Where do You want me to go to do that?' We are able, through the Cooperative Program and Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, to focus 100 percent on the ministry that God has given us as workers. “We’re able to give all of our attention to people who are hurting by ministering to their physical, emotional and, most importantly, their spiritual needs.”

During three years of volunteering at the Casa Hogar children's home in Oaxaca, Mexico, Liesa has met dozens of families from indigenous villages that would have been too difficult for an outsider to access, says the Southern Baptist missionary. Many of the families travel as many as 12 hours over steep, winding hills by bus to bring their children and sometimes adult family members to the children's home for physical and emotional care. Each week, Liesa brings coloring sheets, juice boxes and storyboards to share with the children. Liesa realizes the urgency of telling stories about Jesus and tells the children Bible stories, then asks them to retell them. "We have a small window of time to invest in them because some won't stay, so you try to make the most of the opportunities. They can take God's Word back to their villages -- villages that don't have churches." Liesa appreciates the value of a good story. She noted that hearing about missions as a GA (Girls in Action) at First Baptist Church in Pearl, Miss., and Crossgates Baptist Church in Brandon, Miss., planted a seed for missions in her heart. Pray for the Holemans as they strive to reach people groups in Mexico. There are still at least 10 unengaged, unreached people groups in Mexico, totaling more than 300,000 people who don't have continual access to the Gospel. And, there are more than 30 unreached (less than 2 percent evangelical Christian) people groups in the country, representing nearly 1.5 million people.

MISSIONARY: BILL AND NOY PEELER LOCATION: CAMBODIA

The Peelers have already spent years sharing the gospel and serving others in Cambodia as missionaries with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. When that arrangement ended, they connected with CBF to continue the work they feel God calls them to. “Noy and I love Cambodia and its people, especially those who struggle as farmers and laborers to make it one day at a time,” Bill said. “Since I first started working in a refugee camp in 1979, I have had unbroken contact with the Khmer people. It’s a no-brainer that God planned it that way.” Bill Peeler heard that call while serving in the Army in Vietnam during the war.

For his wife, the discernment came while living in a refugee camp. “I knew right away that my people needed to hear this good news, too,” she said. “Cambodia has suffered so much.” Noy was baptized in 1980. It became clear to her then she must do the same for others. “Jesus didn’t have me to keep quiet but to tell my people that Jesus can save them, too,” she said.

MISSIONARY: SCARLETTE JASPER LOCATION: SOUTHEAST KENTUCKY

Scarlette Jasper will be serving in ten counties of the Lake Cumberland Development Area of South Central and Southwestern Kentucky. She will be serving among the homeless population and working poor, families in medical crisis, victims of domestic violence, and families in financial crisis. Scarlette ministry will interface with CB’s Together for Hope Initiative. Scarlette has been involved in this type of ministry for many years, and is excited about the ways that this work can connect with CBF constituency through Together for Hope. “From the time I was a child, I had a call to do service, to serve others,” she said. “It’s not work that was modeled to me; I didn’t know anyone who did that kind of work. But I have always had a desire to

help others. The Lord has called us to be good stewards to what he has provided for us, and I wanted to be able to help people do that.” “God’s call to us in light of global poverty is to help each other,” Jasper said. “The solution to persistent poverty is not a handout; it’s a hand up; it means doing what Jesus did — feeding the poor, clothing those who need clothing, taking care of the sick, but also helping them make sustainable changes that move them into community and opportunities to help their neighbor. It means forming partnerships that will help engage communities in transformational development together.” “What I find most joyful about following Christ is the relationships that are developed. We turn into family; it’s not just me and them. We are together. We are a Fellowship. We are a community and we work together for common goals.

WALKER BAG MINISTRY

RESUMES SEPTEMBER 13 AT 1PM

The Walker Bag Ministry provides Walker bags to those who use walkers for assistance in getting from place to place. It is a safe way to carry items such as glasses, reading materials, Kleenex, and other needed items. The bags are designed with handles that Velcro to the front of the walkers. This important feature provides an even balance so the user can lift or push the walker without difficulty.

The Walker Bag Ministry meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 1pm in the Confer-ence Room. They have made/delivered Walker Bags to the Rest Homes, hospitals, to those who are homebound and to those who have requested one for a family member or friend.

They invite anyone who likes to sew, can cut out a pattern, iron, or anyone who wants to learn—no experience necessary. Come, join them for fun, fellowship, and an on-going outreach ministry. For information, contact Becky Smith at 726-5323.

Mission Friends Mission Friends is for our preschool and kindergarten children (ages 4 and 5). Our little ones will get a chance to learn about mission work around the world. Will meet in Room 126.

Royal Ambassadors (RAs) RA’s is for all boys in Grades 1-6. Here boys will have an opportunity to become involved in local missions while learning about missions around the world. The RA Motto, "We are Ambassadors for Christ," not only gives the organization its name, but also gives boys and lead-ers a lifestyle goal. Will meet in Room 207.

Girls in Action (GA’s) GA’s is for all girls in Grades 1—6 and is a dynamic mission discipleship group of powerful young girls! In GA’s they will learn about mis-sions and even participate in missions themselves. The Appalachian Coalfields Ministry, sponsored by NC Baptist Men, seeks to help meet the physical and spiritual needs of people living in the Appalachian Area. One of the greatest ministry needs in this area occurs at Christmastime. We are calling on churches statewide to respond to this need through APPALACHIAN CHRISTMAS OUTREACH in 2017.

SANCTUARY CHOIR Let’s Sing! The Sanctuary Choir is looking for new singers to join them in worship leadership. Choir members join together weekly on Thursday evenings at 7:00pm to learn new music, increase music skills, share in fellowship as a body of believers and support each other as members of the family of FBC. Our value is placed on preparing music that is worthy for worship, connecting with God and other believers and leading worship on Sunday mornings. As a result of being in the choir lasting relationships are built and rehearsal time becomes a time to build community, share praises and prayer concerns as well as just have a great time singing.

Christmas music rehearsals begin on September 7. No experience is necessary to join the choir. If you are interested in learning more about opportunities to be a part of the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church, please contact Diane Hawkins, Director of Music Ministries, at either [email protected]. or 252-726-4142. You don’t know what you’re missing until you give it a try!

September 6—7:30pm

Craig Everett will once again be leading our Handbell Choir this season. During this past year, this group has reinvented itself with an eclectic group of dedicated individuals varying in ages from 14 through senior adult with one common goal...To Worship the Lord, our God! This has created an interesting dynamic within the group with the more experienced ringers teaching the younger ringers, ensuring that our handbell tradition at First Baptist will continue for generations to come.

There are a few openings in the handbell choir this season so consider this your invitation to join this diverse group which rehearses weekly on Wednesday evenings following Bible Study from 7:30-8:30pm. While prior experience is not necessary, we do respectfully ask that you understand basic musical rhythms and simple note reading. The handbell members will teach you everything else you need to know concerning handbell techniques. There is great fellowship in this group of ringers who have a wonderful spirit! Rehearsals begin on September 6 when Bible Study and the fellowship meals commence once again.

For more information, please contact: Craig Everett at [email protected]

BASKETBALL To all our faithful Upward basketball supporters and those interested in becoming part of the Upward ministry. It’s that time of year again—when we reach out to the youth and their families through Upward basketball.

The purpose of Upward basketball is to provide a positive Christian atmosphere to teach about the love of Jesus Christ through a sports ministry. Upward basketball is open for any child in grades 1—6.

We are in need of volunteers to work on the following evaluation nights: Tuesday, October 10 (Grades 1 & 2)

Thursday, October 12 (Grades 3 & 4)

Monday, October 16 (Grades 5 & 6)

Tuesday, October 17 (All Grades—Make-up)

We need to be set up and ready to go by 5:15pm to keep things flowing. We’ll need approximately 20 people each night to do the drills, check in the kids, size them and check their height. You do not have to have a vast knowledge of basketball to assist. We need everyone who is willing.

To register your child you may download a registration form from our website at www.fbcmhc.org/upward_basketball or pick up a registration form from the church office All children who plan to participate must attend one of the evaluations.

An evaluation training meeting for those assisting in evaluations will be announced later. If you can help, please call the church office or you may sign up on the Communication Card in the Sunday worship folder.

FBC offers a support group on Saturdays at 10:30am in the Parlor for those who are dealing with the painful process of grief and do not want to walk that journey alone. In the “GriefShare” group, we address topics and issues for those who are grieving the death of a loved one. The group is open to anyone in our community to attend. Please call the church office for further information.

The first meeting of the Prayer Shawl ministry was held in the Parlor on January 24, 2005 with 5 ladies in attendance. This ministry relies on honorariums and memorials that enable us to purchase the specific types of yarn used in making these shawls and other needed supplies for the ministry to continue. Many of you have been generous in donating yarn, and we truly appreciate you thinking of us. However, we request that yarn itself not be donated due to the fact that many times the types of yarn we receive cannot be used for the prayer shawl patterns or there may not even be enough of one type of yarn to make a prayer shawl. We now average 8-10 ladies a eek, but we also have gentlemen who do their knitting at home and have the completed shawls delivered to us! SO, men, we can use you too if you are willing to learn or already know how! For anyone who may still be working but would like to be a part of this ministry, we can meet with you to pick out your yarn and a pattern. You may complete the project at home and bring it back to church on Sunday. Contact Susie Smith if you are interested in this type of arrangement.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 in the Conference Room. Our meetings are very informal and quite relaxed. We talk, share, and learn from each other and just enjoy the time that we are together doing the Lord’s work. Come when you can, leave when you must.

At the end of each meeting, we lay hands on the shawls that have been completed and pray a final blessing as the shawl begins it’s journey to touch a life in some small way. The shawl is then wrapped in tissue paper and a personal note is attached to the outside. Those who receive the shawls may be sick

or bereaving, or they may be celebrating a special time in their life such as the birth of a baby, or a “milestone” birthday.

In addition to Prayer Shawls, we also make dishcloths for the White Christmas boxes and have also made toboggans for Hope Mission, the RAAB Clinic, and the Domestic Violence Shelter. Our prayer is that the recipient will feel the love, comfort, and joy that went into making the shawl or dishcloth, all to the glory of God!

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will resume on Wednesday, September 6 from 10:00-11:00am. We invite anyone who knows how to knit or crochet OR is interested in learning. This is not only for members of First Baptist but also friends and family.

For any questions or further information, please call Susie Smith at 726-1234.

DVD’s ($5) and CD’s ($3) of the various church activities and sermons are available.

On behalf of the Capital Campaign Committee, we want to remind you of our incredible matching gift opportunity. We are so excited to now have 100% of all new pledges and gifts matched dollar for dollar up to $225,000!

Remember, our pledge total will determine how much can be accomplished in the upcoming renovation, so if you have not been visited by a Capital Campaign Team Member or were waiting for a good time to commit, now is a great time! If you have pledged/contributed previously, we say a big "Thank You!" Now is a good time to begin fulfilling that pledge if you haven’t already. All funds received will be used as a down payment for the project and offset the amount needed for a short-term construction loan.

If you desire to learn more about the Sanctuary Renovation Project and how you can help, please contact the church office. We would love to share with you the vision God has given us to restore His sanctuary!
