SECTOR CANARY ISLANDS Since 1993 the Ministry for Agriculture, Food and the Environment’s Nature Trails Program aims to restore for- mer transport infrastructures such as railway tracks, cattle trails and traditional routes, for public use and enjoyment. These routes take us to the countryside to discover the bio- diversity and beauty of our precious natural heritage, and discover the villages, sights, traditions and people that are part of the unique cultural landscape of our country. We invite you to visit them and offer you the keys to enjoy the trip. In this brochure you will find a brief description of the Órzola to Playa Blanca Nature Trail and the map for the journey, along with recommendations to make the most of this experience. We only ask one thing of you: do not for- get to leave everything as you found it. The conservation of these pathways is also your responsibility. NATURE TRAIL ÓRZOLA TO PLAYA BLANCA This 71-kilometre nature trail is divided into 5 stages that cover the island of Lanzarote from North to South, from Órzola to Playa Blanca. The route can be walked or cycled, as most of it is accessible by bike. During the hike, the travelers will pass by amazing landscapes, such as the volcano of La Corona and the traditional crops of La Geria. They will visit towns such as Haría, Teguise and Yaiza, among many others, where they will be able to learn about tra- ditions with local people and share enriching experiences. TELEPHONES OF INTEREST: Lanzarote Regional Government: 0034 922 14 01 06 NIPO: DL: Lanzarote Island [Canary Islands] DISCOVERING LANZAROTE, ITS PEOPLE AND TRADITIONS, WALKING AMONGST DORMANT VOLCANOES STAGE 1: ÓRZOLA - HARÍA A 1. This stage, around 12 km-long, starts in Órzola, whose port connects the islands of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. Step by step, the travelers will go into the Natural Monument of La Corona, enjoying its badlands and the volcano of La Corona. After 10 km, the town of Máguez is visited and, after leaving behind the crossing bet- ween La Atalaya and Peña de María Herrera, this first stage finishes at the town of Haría. STAGE 2: HARÍA - TEGUISE 2. A bit longer than 12.5 km, the second stage starts in the town of Haría, leaving behind the house museum of César Manrique. It goes through the valley of Malpaso, some parts of the trail being a bit demanding and uphill, but making it up for the travelers with the ama- zing views of the East of the island, sighting the towns of Tabayesco and Arrieta. After completing the ascent near Peñas del Chache, the travelers will shortly after reach the area where the hermitage of Las Nieves is built, a privileged spot from where the beautiful pano- ramic view of the beaches of Famara can be enjoyed. The stage ends by descending to the monumental town of Teguise. STAGE 3: TEGUISE - SAN BARTOLOMÉ 3. The shortest stage of the Nature Trail from Órzola to Playa Blanca, a bit longer than 9 km, starts in the town of Teguise. The travelers are seen off from the town by crops cultivated with lapilli sanding, which soon af- ter are based on organic sand with vegetal barriers in the plains of El Jable. This gentle stage ends in the ur- ban area of San Bartolomé, a town located halfway the Nature Trail from Órzola to Playa Blanca and in the cen- ter of the island of Lanzarote. STAGE 4: SAN BARTOLOMÉ - YAIZA 4. The fourth stage of the Nature Trail from Órzola to Playa Blanca is, with more than 22 km, the longest of them all. The route starts in the urban area of San Bartolomé, enjoying its rich architectural heritage. The path goes around Caldera Honda and Guatisea Mountain, reaching the town of Montaña Blanca, as- cending afterwards between the peaks of Los Morretes and Montaña Blanca. After leaving behind the towns of Conil and La Asomada the travelers will step into the traditional vineyards which are part of the Protected Landscape of La Geria. The town of Uga, prior to the ending of the stage in Yaiza, is linked to the latter by the trail that goes through the badlands, also used by the rows of dromedaries that take tourists for a ride through the Timanfaya National Park. STAGE 5: YAIZA - PLAYA BLANCA 6. The fifth and last stage of the Nature Trail from Órzola to Playa Blanca starts in Yaiza. The path is less and less uphill, and goes through the town of Las Breñas, from where a fun descent of several kilometers starts. There, the travelers go through the archeological site known as Poblado del Terminillo. Soon after, the urban area of Playa Blanca is reached, ending thus this fifth stage and the Nature Trail from Órzola to Playa Blanca, near the beach of the same name. Inside, the Natural Monument of La Cueva de Los Naturalistas can be found. It covers more than 5,000 ha, including 7 urban areas within it with little impact on the space due to the reduced population. On the inside it features lava lakes, volcanic cones and other interesting geomorphologic elements, but without a doubt the main attraction of this space are the traditional vineyards, which clearly exemplify the har- monious coexistence between the man and the environ- ment, creating as well a space of unrivalled natural wealth.
