Thursday, October 4 - Chateaux Malmaison or
Versailles
Napleons Chateux de Malmaison
• Visit the historic château where Napoleon
Bonaparte spent his final days in France. Along with the Tuileries, this elegant manor house,
purchased by the emperor’s wife Josephine in 1799, served as the seat of Napoleon’s French
government from 1800 to 1802. After the couple’s divorce, she collected an annual pension
of 5 million francs and kept the house, which she called home until her death in 1814. The
emperor returned the following year after his defeat at Waterloo and received news here of
his exile to the island of Saint Helena. You will admire the courtyards and see Josephine’s
beloved music room and library. Visit her opulent chambers and salon, and view the
emperor’s bedroom and the stunning mahogany decor of his study with its original
furnishings. After, visit the nearby town of Rueil, site of Josephine’s tomb. You will have free
time here before returning to your ship.
The Palace of Versailles
• Enjoy a day at the former home of French kings, the awe-inspiring Château de Versailles. The
palace and sprawling gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, began as a small hunting
lodge. Over the years it was enlarged by each of its three resident kings—most famously,
Louis XIV, the “Sun King.” A local guide will accompany you to the château, where you’ll
marvel at the extravagance and excess of French royalty. You will see the state apartments of
the king, the Hercules Drawing Room with its magnificent painted ceiling, and the famed Hall
of Mirrors, the glittering corridor of chandeliers and glass where the Treaty of Versailles was
signed to end World War I. You’ll learn about the elaborate court life of the 18th century and
also see the queen’s apartments and the chamber of Marie Antoinette. Later, there’ll be time
to explore the vast, elaborate gardens.

VIKING KADLIN
SELECT YOUR STATEROOM
The world's largest river cruise line expanded further following the launch of Viking Kadlin
and five identical vessels in April 2016, bringing the total number of Longships to 46 and the
total size of its river fleet to more than 60 vessels.
The 443-foot, 190-passenger Kadlin is sleek and minimalist, with tasteful, muted decor
throughout the public rooms and cabins. This Scandinavia touch is one of the trademarks of
Viking, and it makes the Longships feel particularly light and roomy.
Kadlin is the sister ship to Viking Alruna, Egil, Rolf, Tialfi and Vilhjalm, which sail on the
Rhine, Main, Danube and Seine Rivers. In common with all the Longships, it offers a large
number of walkout balcony cabins -- 48 total -- in addition to suites that comprise two
separate rooms rather than one large living and sleeping area.
The 95 cabins are spread across three passenger decks, with the two Explorer Suites
measuring 445 square feet situated aft on the upper deck. Both these suites have large,
private wraparound verandas that provide panoramic views of the passing scenery.
Although they are located above the engines, Longships have "green" hybrid diesel-electric
engines that are quiet and cause minimal vibration. Seven Veranda Suites, which measure
275 square feet and have a bedroom, living room, walkout balcony and French balcony, are
also situated on the upper deck. This deck also has 20 Veranda Cabins, which measure
205 square feet including the balcony, and five French Balcony Cabins, all 135 square feet.
There are 19 Veranda and 17 French Balcony Cabins on the middle deck, and 25 river-level
Standard Cabins on the lower deck, which measure 150 square feet and have a fixed
window.
The latest Explorer Suites differ slightly from earlier Longships, with a fixed rather than
sliding wall between the bedroom and living area, and changes in the bathroom that include
having one wash basin instead of the previous two. This has resulted in a larger shower,
and for the uninhibited, the floor-to-ceiling shower window overlooking the river can be
turned from opaque to clear glass at the flick of a switch! L'Occitane toiletries have also
been replaced with the line's own-brand, Freyja products.

Breakfast and lunch feature a buffet with served items from the menu, and dinner is a
served three-course meal with the option to add extra appetizer courses and a cheese
plate. Menus are well presented and imaginative, with regional dishes reflecting the
countries being visited during the cruise. There is always a vegetarian choice, plus an
"always available" menu of simpler meals such as salmon, steak and Caesar salad. These
meals are all served in the main restaurant on the middle deck. A lighter breakfast and
lunch alternative is available in the Aquavit Terrace, the attractive indoor/outdoor seating
area at the front of the ship on the upper deck. There is a complimentary tea and coffee
station, available 24/7, with snacks such as cookies and muffins available during the day.
Kadlin's onboard facilities include a lounge bar with a dance floor, sun deck, laundry
service, library with two computers and free Wi-Fi. An elevator connects the middle and
upper deck.
