HT Cotswold RangeSteam Heated Non-storage Calorifiers, Calorifier/Condensate Coolers to BS 853
THE HT COTSWOLD RANGE OF STEAM/WATER CALORIFIERS AND CONDENSATE COOLERS IS BASED ON A PROVEN DESIGN TO
THE REQUIREMENTS OF BS 853. THE STANDARD RANGE OF CALORIFIERS AND PACKAGES ARE DESIGNED TO MEET MOST
MARKET REQUIREMENTS AND BY MANUFACTURING IN ECONOMIC ‘BATCHES’ CAN BE OFFERED ON SHORTER LEAD TIMES AND AT
COMPETITIVE PRICES.
The standard Calorifiers and Condensate Coolers are constructed
with welded mild steel shells, mild steel tube plates, solid drawn
copper ‘U’ tubes, and cast iron steam headers to the relevant
British Standards. Integron lowfin tubing is used for compact
efficient design. Standard flanging is to BS 4504 and screwed
connections to BSP. Internal tube support design, based on years
of heat exchanger experience, ensures a vibration-free operation,
with sufficient excess surface to allow for a reasonable degree of
fouling.
Sizing information is included in this brochure to determine the
calorifier required for duties within the ranges indicated, assuming
the following is known:
• Steam pressure – immediately prior to calorifier entry having
allowed for control valve pressure drop.
• Secondary water flow and return system temperatures.
Having thermally selected a unit, check the pressure drops and
connection sizes to ensure that the secondary resistance falls
within your system design capability. (If the sizing falls outside the
chart parameters, please contact our sales office for assistance).
Your system design should provide substantial secondary water
flow at all times.
Calorif iers are available in both horizontal and vertical
configurations. However, caution is advised with Vertical Units
using low pressure steam below about 1.4 Bar g (20 psig).
Excessive condensing of steam, in the rising side of the ‘U’ tubes,
could cause a certain amount of water logging, leading to noise
problems.
If vertical mounting is used, an additional small steam trap is
required on the steam inlet side. This is to drain any condensate
forming in the rising side of the ‘U’ tubes.
Rycroft do not advise oversizing a calorifier above the specific duty
required.

Selection of HT Cotswold Non-storageCalorifiersCOTSWOLD STEAM/WATER CALORIFIERS ARE FITTED WITH A ‘U’ TUBE BATTERY AND ARE AVAILABLE IN THIRTEEN STANDARD SIZES,
FOR DUTIES UP TO 2,500 KW (8,530,000 BTUs/HOUR).
CHARTS 1 AND 2 CAN BE USED TO DETERMINE THE SIZE OF A HT COTSWOLD CALORIFIER TO SATISFY A GIVEN THERMAL LOAD,
KNOWING THE STEAM PRESSURE AT ENTRY TO THE CALORIFIER, AND ON THE BASIS THAT THE SECONDARY WATER TEMPERATURES ARE
WITHIN THE LIMITS SHOWN.
For sizing outside the limits of charts 1 and 2 please contact our
Technical Sales Office for details of our Ryco Range.
Charts 3 and 4 indicate the secondary water pressure drop
through your chosen unit. These pressure drops relate to our
standard design of unit and will vary if secondary connections are
different from standard.
Dimensional details of any unit selected can be found on page 5.
Example:
A HT Cotswold Calorifier is required to give an output of
1,000 kW using steam at 5.0 Bar g at the chest with secondary
water of 82°C flow, 71°C return.
From chart 2 a vertical line upwards from a steam pressure of
5.0 Bar g intersects the horizontal lines from 1,000 kW outputs
between the CT 082 and CT 101. The larger unit CT 101 must be
used.
From the equation below we can determine the flow rate is
21.7 litres per second and so from chart 4 we can read the
anticipated pressure drop for size CT 101 to be 10.6 kPa.

How to specify or order and remove
the possibility of errors or omission:
Supply One Cotswold Calorifier type CT
101 for horizontal, alternatively CT 101
for vertical mounting to give an output of
1,000 kW (3,413,000 BTUs per hour) with
steam at 5.0 Bar g (72.5 psig) after
control valve heating secondary water
from 71°C return to 82°C flow.
The calorifier is constructed to BS 853:1996 and suitable for a
maximum primary working pressure of 10 Bar g and secondary
working pressure of 7 Bar g.
All screwed (BSP) and flanged (BS 4504) connections are to Heat
Transfer standard drawing.
Please remember to state whether horizontal or vertical, the full
thermal details and any changes in materials or connections from
the standard arrangement to avoid misunderstanding.
NB:
The details given on the charts will enable engineers to size their
own heating calorifier for the majority of requirements but please
contact our sales office if further assistance is required or any of
the following conditions apply:
1. Steam primary contains more than 25°C of superheat.
2. Steam pressure is less than 1.5 Bar g.
3. Non-standard materials are required, eg. copper shell, brass
tubeplate, plain or indented tubes, etc.
4. Larger duties than those shown on charts 1 and 2 are required.
5. The secondary temperatures are outside 83°C/65°C.

Selection of Charlton Non-storage HeatingCalorifiers
How to find the unit you need
Our sales office will be pleased to advise on precise selection of
HT Charlton Calorifiers using our computer based design and
quotations software.
The sizing procedure given below is to be used only for secondary
conditions of 82°C flow and 71°C return temperatures; and
where the difference between the primary return and secondary
flow temperatures is greater than 8.5°C.
Example:
A HT Charlton Calorifier is required to give an output of 1000 kW
using primary water 150°C flow, 110°C return, with secondary
water 82°C flow and 71°C return.
AMTD = (150 + 110) – (82 + 71) = 53.5°C
2 2
From the selection chart on page eight, the vertical line upwards
from an AMTD of 53.5°C intersects the horizontal line from
1000 kW output between the CH083 and CH101 units. The
larger unit CH101 must be used. Now check the primary flow to
see if a 2 or 4 pass unit is required.
Flow primary water = litres/sec. Output
(T1 – T2) x 4.1871000
= (150 – 110) x 4.18 = 5.98 litres/sec.*
From the flow rate table a 2 pass unit is required. The unit size is
therefore CH1012.
* If the flow rate is in excess of a 2 pass unit please contact our salesoffice.
Arithmetical mean temperature difference

The U-tube battery is the most common type of heat exchanger
used in calorifier manufacturing. High efficiency tubes unaffected
by thermal expansion provide extremely high levels of reliability.
To ensure a high heat transfer capacity a wide range of multi-
pass exchangers are available.
Standard bundle arrangements are manufactured from 20mm
tube although other diameters are used depending upon the
duty requirement. Finned and plain tube options enable Rycroft
to offer economic solutions to meet the most demanding duties.
Tubes are generally expanded into the tube plates and do not
require sealing gaskets or ferrules. For high pressures and
temperatures, doubled grooved tube plates are offered.
For tube bundles with straight lengths greater than 1250mm
support baffles are fitted where appropriate.
In order to ease disassembly, batteries greater than 380mm in
diameter, calorifiers are fitted with a tapped hole to accept a
lifting eye. In addition runner wheels, collar bolts and starting
screws can be supplied.
Tubes are available in copper, stainless steel, 90/10 and 70/30
Cu-Ni.

The fixed copper coil is generally produced from a single tube
formed into a helical coil and can operate at a greater pressure
than a double tube exchanger. Unfortunately as the cylinder size
increases the length of heating coil becomes disproportionately
greater and this heater is therefore only practical for moderate
size cylinders.
The single coil is particularly useful for small flow rates with a
large temperature drop, such as those found in waste heat
recovery and solar heating installations.
Three diameters of copper coil are readily available, ie, 28, 35
and 42mm. Larger diameters are available, please contact our
sales department for details. All Rycroft coils are appropriately
stayed to ensure trouble free operation. For large primary flows,
double coil arrangements are also available. Coil connections are
generally positioned on the same side of the cylinder.

Combined Space/Water Heating Systems
Where the peak demand exceeds the available boiler power for
water heating, installation techniques may resolve the problem.
For example on a primary circuit, the HT Breeze must be the first
piece of equipment to be fed from the boiler. Under peak demand
conditions, the boiler power can be directed to the HT Breeze at
the expense of the space heating demand.
Generally for installations where the boiler capacity is insufficient
to meet the demand, a buffer vessel is connected in parallel with
the HT Breeze.
Rycroft have developed a range of buffer vessels specifically
designed to match the HT Breeze. Both vented and unvented
options are available and can be skid mounted to provide a
complete hot water package.
Controller Features
