Go Local! is an independent, truly local business run by a local resident - not by a large team with an office in Halifax. Go Local! has no connections with any other local publications or franchise.

Another bike race is coming through on 3rd May (Le Tour de Yorkshire), it should be great fun with a local gala and fun day too, and thankfully not as disruptive as the TdF. On the cycling theme, PC Fiona Igo also gives us some tips on cycling safely this month (P97), so get on your bikes and ride!

With summer approaching, there are more outside events with a Classic bike show and Totally Locally market. If you want to make a difference locally then consider joining the Fire &Water team who are fund raising to transform dis-used buildings in Sowerby Bridge into a community hub (P11).Wishing you a happy and sunny May!

The Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge’s Classic Bike & Scooter Show is taking place in Sowerby Bridge on Bank Holiday Sunday, 24th May 2015 between 10.30 and 4pm. The show, which is open to all pre 1980 Bikes & Scooter & includes trophies and Millers Oils ‘goodie bags’ for each class winner with every entrant receiving an enamel souvenir badge.

Attractions on the day include a hog roast with other refreshments and new this year is a free all-day indoor cinema showing classic bike & scooter related films. It is also hoped to include some auto jumble, trade and memorabilia stands on site too.

The show will be held on the Shire Cruisers Wharf in Sowerby Bridge (HX6 2AG) amongst the restored buildings alongside the Calder & Hebble Navigation Canal and river making an ideal setting for a relaxed day out.

Pre-registration is advisable as up to 120 classics are expected and space is limited. All details can be found at www.sowerbybridgerotary.org.uk. The event so far has English, Japanese, Italian and German bikes already entered in to the show. Last year the most common manufacturer represented at the show was Norton. There is a lot of press about the new Ducati Scrambler with design elements taken from the original 1960’s bike. You can see an original 1969 Ducati Scrambler at the show as well as a Jawa, a 175cc built in Czechoslovakia in 1959 and still with its original paint, which is a rarity these days. The organisers are

hoping that the star of the show will be a Brough Superior, which is worth almost a quarter of a million pounds!

This year the event is also open to scooters with three classes of its own. Whether it’s a Vespa, Lambretta or something completely different, register it in the show and share your pride and joy with others. There are also two ‘best in show’ prizes and a public choice trophy so that all visitors can have a say in which bike or scooter they like best. If you have got a pre 1980 bike or scooter you would like to show, contact 01422 836044.

This is the Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge’s main fundraising event of the year; last year’s event raised over £2,500 for local charities. Funds from the show will go to part fund a local public access defibrillator and also other local good causes. The show has the

added advantage of giving a bit back to the local commu-nity as hopefully many people will enjoy a trip out to visit the show with local shops and cafes receiving a boost to their business too.

The event will hopefully become an annual success story putting our local area even more firmly on the national map. As it is on our doorstep, let’s make the most of this opportunity (price £5 adults / £2.50 for under 16s) for a fun day out and see an array of Classics displayed by their proud owners.

This is a wonderfully simple recipe but very rewarding and SO much better than the mass produced service station alternatives. You can add whatever flavours you want to, so experiment all you like - but orange and honey is a great way to start!

Ingredients: 200g oats 125g unsalted butter 50g golden syrup 65g honey 1 orange zest 300g orange juice ½ tsp salt 40g light brown soft sugar

Method: In a large sauce pan reduce the orange juice by at least three quarters on a low heat, until it is thick and syrupy. Add into this same pan the butter,

syrup, honey, orange zest and sugar. Heat gently until the butter is melted and sugar dissolved. If the pan is big enough, add the oats directly into the mix – it saves on washing up – or tip into a bowl and then add the oats. Mix thoroughly and tip out and spread evenly onto a lined baking tray. It wants

to be about 1.5 to 2cm deep.

Bake in a pre-heated oven at 160oC for about 15-20 minutes until it turns golden and starts to crisp round the edges. If you like it crunchier then cook a little more and let the colour deepen.

Allow to cool, then cut a large slice and eat secretly before offering to others!

If you are disorganised enough to have left booking your summer holiday until now, you are probably desperately hunting through websites such as Owners Direct trying to find a villa that is free for a week in August. There are plenty of similar sites around; they offer owners a cost effective means of renting out their properties and frantic holidaymakers a supply of villas that have been overlooked by the big travel companies. But there is a growing problem with such websites; they are in effect advertising portals along the lines of Gumtree and are not regulated by ABTA or any similar organisation. Because of this, they are increasingly being targeted by internet fraudsters who masquerade as owners and steal deposits and upfront payments.

Last year, some people lost thousands of pounds, not to mention having nowhere to go on holiday. Many owners have also wound up out of pocket because their villas have remained empty during the busy summer months, or they’ve felt obliged to honour the booking even though the rental money has been paid to someone else.

It is often assumed that the scammers hack into the owner’s website account and then divert any enquiries to themselves, but this isn’t usually the case. Security on these websites tends to be pretty good and also the owner would normally receive an email to say their account details had been changed. Instead, how the scam works is this: the fraudster contacts a number of owners through the site with an enquiry. The owners reply to the query and in so doing provide their email addresses. He attempts to hack the email addresses; in the cases where he succeeds, he redirects any incoming emails to his own email. When a genuine enquiry comes in, he responds to it himself, takes the booking and arranges for the deposit to be transferred into his bank account. If he times it right, he can also bag the final payment. Then, a month before the holiday season gets into full

Technology Holiday Villas – A word of caution

swing, he empties the bank account and disappears.

I must stress that such frauds are very uncommon and affect only a tiny fraction of bookings made via such sites, the vast majority of which are mutually satisfactory to both sides. Even so, there are some simple steps that people can

take to ensure that they don’t get caught out.

As a holidaymaker, when you make your initial enquiry, ask for a phone number. If it looks like a place you are interested in booking, call the owner up to ask some general questions such as how close is the villa to shops and restaurants. A genuine owner will be able to answer your questions in detail. If the owner is reluctant to give a contact number or doesn’t respond to your messages, proceed with caution. Check to see if the villa has its own website; a lot of them do. A fraudster would have neither the desire nor the means to set up a website so the presence of one provides reassurance that the details are genuine. Finally, try to pay by credit or debit card as your payment will be protected by the card issuer. A lot of owners em-ploy the services of a local letting agent to process payments, hand over keys and arrange cleaning and other services so you may well be able to do this.

The best thing that owners can do is use an email linked to a domain, for example [email protected]. These email addresses are usually protected by randomly generated passwords and are far more secure than those provided by the main ISPs such as Hotmail or Gmail addresses. If this is not possible, use a password containing a random assortment of at least eight letters, characters and numbers when you set up the account. Don’t store the password on your computer.

Wherever you go and however you decide to book your holiday, have a great time.

The next time you settle down at your computer with a cup of tea or relax in your favourite chair with a glass of red wine, take care that your tipple doesn’t turn into an insurance claim, writes Emily Mitchell of leading rural insurer, NFU Mutual.

‘It’s no use crying over spilt milk,’ or so the saying goes. But what happens if you spill a cup of coffee over your laptop or drop a glass or red wine on your expensive Persian rug?

Claims for accidental damage are some of the most common claims made under a home insurance policy and, when it comes to damage caused by liquids like red wine or tea, it is carpets, upholstery and electrical appliances (such as laptops and phones) that see the most claims.

During 2014, NFU Mutual paid out £6.5 million in claims for accidental damage, with mishaps involving drinks accounting for 10% of this type of claim.

Top of the list of tipples which cause the most damage was red wine, closely followed by coffee, soft drinks and tea. Carpets and soft furnishings were the items most commonly damaged by red wine, accounting for 73% of claims with laptops accounting for 26% and phones a mere 1%. Guitar amplifiers, pianos and items of clothing were also amongst the items damaged by red wine, with the most expensive claim submitted potentially costing £26,000.

Accidents will happen! However, with a little care and forethought, it is possible to reduce the risk and ensure you are less likely to find yourself crying over spilt milk, wine or that well-earned cup of tea:

• Keep drinks and liquids away from laptops and other electrical devices;

• Do not use phones and other electrical devices whilst in the bath;

• There are lots of myths about stain removal and particularly the removal of red wine stains. One old wives’ tale is that you should sprinkle salt on a red

Homeowners are more likely to cry over spilt wine than milk...

wine spill but experts recommend that you should never do this as red wine contains tannin which can be set permanently with salt;

• Remember that tea and coffee also contain tannin, so don’t use salt to treat this type of stain;

• The best advice for treating any stain is to deal with it while it is still fresh;

• Dab, rather than rub a stain and make sure you use white paper towels or a clean, white lint-free cloth.

The fine art of Six Months Smiles and Dental Sedation

What is Six Months Smiles?A smile that’s spoilt by gaps or crooked teeth can makemany people feel self-conscious, reserved, or even ashamed of their appearance. There are various solutions to treat crooked teeth but most take at least 18 months if not 2-3 years with conventional orthodontic treatment or clear braces. However the latest in orthodontics, Six Month Smiles ‘invisible braces’ can make a big difference fast. Delivering great results in, just six months, they’re perfect, if you need to get ready for a wedding, start a big new job, or just see that ‘brand new you’ sooner when you stand in front of the mirror.

There are no bulky and uncomfortable standard braces to wear for long periods, which is what makes them a great solution for self-conscious teens.Last year I became a 5* Six Month Smiles Mentorand am proud to be one of the only Mentors of thistype throughout Calderdale and Kirklees.

Can you help everyone achieve the perfect smile?Sometimes just one type of treatment isn’t enough to achieve the smile of your dreams, so we offer complete smile makeovers, which often consist of a blend of different treatments and techniques. A smile makeover can be the perfect solution for a combination of problems such as crooked, uneven or worn down teeth, chipped teeth with old fillings, and discoloured teeth. We’ve treated people of all ageshere at Town Hall Dental – it’s never too late to improve your smile. Due to the training that I’vehad with ‘Extreme Makeover’ dentist Dr Rahul Doshi – I feel we’re in a very strong position to give all our clients the best quality advice and treatment proposals.

What’s the next stage for anyone interested in a smile makeover?They simply need to make an appointment with theClinic for a free initial consultation.

What are the benefits of Dental Sedation?Regardless of the warm and welcoming atmosphere at Town Hall Dental – there are just some patients who do still fear a visit to the Dentist. Dr Kam Chana, the New Associate Dentist at Town Hall Dental, answers a few questions about this safe,gentle and effective technique;

What experience do you have in the field of Dental Sedation?As well as holding a Diploma in Dental Sedationand I also have over 15 years hands on experience.I’ve carried out over 1,000 Sedations which puts mein a position of real experience enabling me to be aMentor for other Dentists on Sedation Techniques.I’m also a member of the DSTG (Dental SedationTeachers Group).

How does Dental Sedation work?Many people feel nervous or apprehensive aboutvisiting the Dentist or are even terrified by thethought of having Dental Treatment – so sedationis a fantastic way to solve this issue. Our sedationtechnique makes patients completely relaxed, verycomfortable and largely unaware of the treatmentsensations that they are having. If, following your consultation, we discover that you would really benefit from Sedation – we will talk you through the entire process including what to expect on the day.

How long does the Treatment take to recover from?Recovery time is very quick following DentalSedation. In fact, many patients are very coherentfollowing Sedation and each person is carefullymonitored prior to them leaving the Clinic.

Could anyone else benefit from Sedation?Some people have a very strong gagging reflex andreally struggle to keep their mouth open long enoughto enable us to carry out necessary treatments.

What would your advice be to anyone nervousabout visiting their Dentist?Just call us to make an appointment for a consultation. If we feel that you would benefit from Sedation – this can easily be arranged and we can talk this through with you in more detail.

May Day Gala and the Tour de YorkshireThe May Bank Holiday weekend should be a smasher this year. The Ripponden Gala is normally held on Bank Holiday Monday, but because we have the Tour de Yorkshire coming through Ripponden, the date has wisely been moved back a day to coincide with this year’s big cycling event.

The Ripponden Gala is always very popular and well attended and this year locals can watch the Tour de Yorkshire race unfold between 11 and 4pm from Millfold, where the siting of a big screen has been confirmed. There will be lots of stalls too and after the race a family sing along will be shown on the big screen too (weather permitting).

In the morning at 11.30am there is a children’s decorated bike competition at Ripponden Community Centre. There are two categories age 4 to 6 and age 7 to

11. Vicar Chris Wray will judge. The lucky winners will cycle onto the field leading the way to their prize (using the safe underpass route of course). For information about the race route see www.letouryorkshire.com but the key information is that the cycle race will come through Ripponden from Barkisland at about 2.10pm (but I’d be ready for 2pm, you know how fast these chaps go!) with the final ones leaving by 2.30 up the Rochdale Road off towards Cragg Vale. This time we have rolling road blocks so

hopefully traffic congestion will not be too big an issue, but it’s always good advice to get there early and enjoy the race as part of your day out. Don’t forget thatStones Methodist Church alsohave their family fun day onSunday too (see ad on P68). Enjoy your day. Come on Bradley Wiggins!....................

On yer bike!It’s now May 2015 and the Tour de Yorkshire will be coming through Barkisland and Ripponden on Sunday 3rd May.

As spring and the cycle race come to Yorkshire, many of us will decide to get our pedal cycles out and start to cycle again or indeed go and buy a new one. Not everyone cycles all year round and some people prefer to cycle in fair weather.

If you are getting your bicycle out after a spell in the garage, please make sure you check it for safety. It’s no fun if the chain goes as you are trying to get up a hill or you find the brakes do not work going downhill. If in doubt, it is a good idea to get the cycle checked out by a cycle shop, and there are many in the area.

Please do not forget to use a cycle helmet. This is a vital piece of equipment that could save your life and the life of your child. Hitting your head against the tarmac is a certain way of landing yourself in hospital. Make sure that your children have well-fitting cycle helmets and that they wear them. When out cycling, use the road and NOT THE PAVEMENT. The pavement is for pedestrians not for cyclists. Of course we all appreciate that a very young child is safer on the pavement as they try to get to their balance on a pedal cycle. So long as an adult is nearby watching them and keeping a watch for approaching pedestrians.

When approaching traffic lights, the law applies to cyclists as well as vehicles. You must stop and wait until the light turns to green.

Drivers, please give cyclists room on the road. Some of the cycle lanes on the roads are less than pleasant to cycle along (grids, broken tarmac, rubbish etc.). If a cyclist is not using the cycle lane

there is probably a good reason for it. Give the cyclists time to pull over to let you pass.

Cyclists, the same applies that you must let drivers pass you. They are going faster and you must not hold them up unnecessarily. Pull into the side when you can to allow a vehicle to pass.

Make sure that your cycle is insured correctly, as they are often stolen from peoples’ sheds, garages and outbuildings. Many cycles are very expensive, but we just happily stick them in the garage or shed and leave them.

It is a good idea to get yourself a cycle lock for your bike, in case you decide to stop somewhere and call in at a shop for instance or a pub! A thief can quickly take you unchained cycle away, leaving you with a long walk home.

Happy cycling!

Regards from your local officersFiona Igo and George Serban

Ancient Benchmarks like thisare to be found on structuresthroughout the Ryburn Valley The term benchmark, originatesfrom the marks chiselled intostone structures, into which anangle-iron could be placed to

form a "bench" for a levelling rod, thus ensuring itcould be accurately repositioned to calculate theheight above sea level relevant to other nearbybenchmarked datum lines. `The benchmark’ is also a professionally acceptedterm for determining or measuring the quality ofstandards and performance.

Even though technology has overtaken levelling rods,new benchmarks are still appearing on buildings inour area, as a trademark of the quality standards of alocal buildingcompany.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Andy Routledge feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ripponden, Rishworth, Barkisland, Norland, Sowerby, Mill Bank, Soyland & Sowerby Bridge areas & Andy is finding that his

approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Don’t be an easy target for burglars

Every month there are over 30,000 burglaries in England and Wales and the cost to a household is not just in monetary value but emotional upset too.

You may well have heard of “cylinder snapping” or “lock snapping“ or even the term “lock bumping”.

Lock snapping is a very common method used by burglars to break into property that has a euro cylinder lock. This kind of lock has been used in almost all properties that have UPVC doors, although a significant number of composite & aluminium doors use them too.

Burglars have discovered what the locksmith and hardware industry have known for years. It doesn›t matter how many hook or dead bolts you have on your door, the weak point is the cylinder lock.

Due to inherent weak points in the door cylinder lock, having little material to give robust strength and the screw fixing enhancing this weakness, using simple tools, a burglar can «snap» the cylinder and gain access to the door mechanism and open the door literally in seconds!

In the past the police have not recorded the means of forced entry and so the method has been largely kept a secret but with easy access to information via the internet the «lock snappng» method has been on a steady increase since 2005.

A recent Crime Survey for England and Wales (2004 to 2013) identified that forced lock entries were still the most significant method of entry in incidents of burglary and that the front of the property is the most common point of entry. According to the DHF (Door Hardware Federation) there are 45 million residential entrance doors in the UK with more than half of these vulnerable to snapping and other methods of attack.

Don’t be an easy target for burglars

2 standards have been released - TS007 (3 star rating system) which is used by the British Standards Intitute to Kitemark against and the Sold Secure Diamond standard which was developed by the Master Locksmith

Association.

There is an easy solution though as improvements have now been made with superior locks now widely available.

Look out for the symbols below for “anti bump” locks and reputable suppliers and installers. At a cost of around £60-80 to replace a lock it could easily be worth it for your peace of mind.
