3 new ways to link mobilenumber with Aadhaar

Mobile numbers can be linked with Aadhaar through OTP(one-time password), app or the Interactive Voice ResponseSystem (IVRS) facility.

Mobile operators have been directed to facilitate the abovethree new methods.

While the linking process by visiting stores of telecom firmswill continue, the government has also ordered the companiesto carry out the exercise at the doorstep of disabled, chronicallyill and senior citizens.

For users who do not have the 12-digit Aadhaar number, aseparate mechanism for e-verification designed to weed outdummy users will be put in place shortly.

The deadline for linking Aadhaar with mobile number (SIM)is Feb. 6, 2018. However, there is a fresh petition in theSupreme Court challenging the move.

Due to the shortage of man-power, the water agency plansto do it with communityparticipation and support fromvoluntary organizations.

Residents have been askedto contact their respectiveMetrowater area or depot

offices for guidance on main-tenance of RWH structures.

Residents must ensurerainwater pipes are free ofblocks or cracks to avoidoverflow and leakage. Rooftopsmust be cleaned to avoidcontamination of rainwaterbefore it enters the ground.

According to a Metrowaterofficial, the last audit was done

two years back by Rain Centre(a city-based voluntaryorganization). It had reportedthat though RWH structureshad been constructed in manybuildings they were not beingmaintained properly.

Post Deepavali, encroachmentsincrease in T. Nagar

By Our Staff ReporterThough encroachments have been a permanent issue in the

commercial pockets of T. Nagar, many new hawkers tookadvantage of Deepavali to set up roadside shops in theneighbourhood.

They also put up temporary structures on pavements andspace under Usman Road flyover and in its service lanes.

Post Deepavali, these illegal structures continue to occupypublic space causing obstruction to pedestrians.

The Corporation too seems to have turned a blind eye to theexisting and the new encroachers. Motorists are finding itdifficult to maneuver through the service lanes. It is a Herculeantask for water tankers to use the service lanes to reach thehouses in the bylanes to supply water. The same is the plightof ambulances during emergency situations.

According to the residents, it is high time the Corporationofficials took action instead of turning a blind eye to theproliferating encroachments and earmark vending zones in theneighbourhood.

Don’t permit commercial establishments to use public binsSir, Recently, two garbage bins kept at the

junction of Mangesh Street and Usman Roadwere moved to Mangesh Street and PinjalaSubramanian Street. The bins kept in both thesestreets are overflowing with garbage mainlydumped by nearby hawkers and commercialestablishments.

Large quantities of garbage in the form of foodwaste and plastic bags are also dumped aroundthe overflowing bins oblivious of the healthhazard it can cause to residents living in the

streets. Though the Corporation sanitary work-ers clean daily, the quantity dumped is too muchfor them to handle. Roadside eateries and com-mercial establishments should not be allowed todump the waste generated by them in bins keptin residential streets/colonies. The Traders’ Asso-ciation should take up this issue with the Corpo-ration for some alternative arrangement to clearthe garbage generated by commercial establish-ments and to ensure that the neighbourhood iskept clean and green. Wedding hall converted into warehouse/dormitory affects residentsSir, An erstwhile wedding hall in Subramanian

Street, West Mambalam is being used as a ware-house-cum-dormitory for male staff by a wellknown commercial establishment in T. Nagar. Itis causing a host of problems for residents on thestreet. Deliveries to the warehouse arrive late inthe night disturbing the sleep of the residentsliving nearby. As the sanitation facility is notsufficient to meet the needs of a large number ofpersons residing there, many of them use the

street for daily routine such as brushing teeth andtaking bath, or sometimes even relieving them-selves. Sewage often overflows onto the street asthe drain gets clogged regularly.

Despite repeated complaints to the local offi-cials, there has been no respite from this river ofsewage. I hope the Corporation officials takeimmediate action to stop the overflow of sewage.S. Jambu Lingam, Subramaniam Street,West Mambalam

Every LPG consumer is insured, eligible for compensationSir, While we come across accidents caused due

to explosion of LPG cylinders, not many are awareabout the compensation that can be got from oilcompanies or the LPG distributor. Oil companiestake advantage of this ignorance and keep itunder wraps and do not deem it fit to inform theconsumers with the result there have been fewclaims from the consumers and the insurancescompanies benefit the most. It is compulsory foroil companies to take Public Liability Insurance

Policy including 3rd party cover for accidentsinvolving LPG, and the compensation to be paidtherein to the affected consumer. Under thepolicy, in case of LPG accidents, the consumer iseligible for compensation based on the assess-ment made by the insurance company. The con-sumer only needs to inform his/her distributor/agent to start the process of claim. T. NagarResidents’ Welfare Association, 30, RanganStreet, T. Nagar

Can policemen get away without wearing helmets?Sir, This refers to the circular issued by the City

Police Commissioner seeking action against po-lice officials who are caught riding two-wheelerswithout wearing helmets. The circular was is-sued following action taken by Guindy TrafficPolice against a couple of policemen attached tothe Saidapet Police Station who were found riding2-wheelers without helmets. I appreciate theCommissioner for the action he has taken todiscipline his staff and set the house in order.

The public should also be more vigilant and

report cases of policemen breaking traffic ruleslike not wearing helmets while riding.

While the said circular should make the trafficpolice enforce the rule even on their own folk, howdoes one know that penal action is taken againstthe offending cops?

The Commissioner must also come out with aprocedure to confirm that no one, even if he/sheis from his own department, will be spared. Inother words, the circular must be implementedin letter and spirit. K. Harihar, T. Nagar

40 deaths out of 12000 dengue cases is not minimalSir, A 5-member Central team comprising doc-

tors from various reputed institutions did a surveyof dengue related cases by visiting some Chennaihospitals. According to media reports, the panelhas stated that the number of 40 deaths out of12000 cases is minimal. What does it mean byminimal? Does it mean that these deaths are notto be taken serio-usly? Then, how many moredeaths should be a cause for worry? This, accord-ing to me, is an irresponsible statement and an

insult to the deceased. The outbreak of denguehas been severe this year and to the kith and kinof the deceased, the loss is irreplaceable. Will theteam members dare to make a statement like thisif the deceased had included one of their lovedones?

The panel should, instead, apologize for thecallous report and order an investigation into thesudden spurt in the incidence of dengue in the city.V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Mobile companies swamping consumers with Aadhaar link messages

Service road of Rangarajapuram flyover in bad conditionSir, The service road on the Kodambakkam

side (western side) of Rangarajapuram flyover isin a bad condition. It is ridden with potholesmaking it a risky and difficult ride for motorists.

The 15-ft wide service lane has been encroachedupon by parked vehicles being repaired by acouple of roadside workshops. Pedestrians toohave a tough time traversing the path added to thedust pollution caused every time a vehicle passes.

The road turns slushy and slippery during rainsmaking it even more dangerous to ride on. Sev-eral minor accidents have been reported in therecent past. It is high time the Corporation offi-cials took heed of several complaints lodged bythe public to relay the service lane, especiallywith the monsoon approaching. SrinivasanVaradarajan, 15, Chakrapani Street, WestMambalam

Sir, Not a day goes without my getting innumer-able messages from my mobile service providervia SMS/email or voice call to link my Aadhaarnumber. This in spite of the fact that I havealready done it. The messages are not even politeand threaten a consumer with disconnection ofservice even when the deadline is Feb. 6, 2018,which is likely to be extended. The linking ofAadhaar number with all utilities has become afad for the incumbent govt. Telecom companiescite a directive from DoT (Department of Telecom)to re-verify that all existing connections have

been linked. While DoT has used an observationby the court as a binding directive, an interimorder by the court states that Aadhaar enrolmentcannot be made mandatory. The linking processis not friendly either, especially for the elderlywho are not able to register as their fadingfingerprints are often not picked by the biometricmachines. My father is 85 and is not able toregister because the machine is unable to regis-ter his fingerprint. Does it mean he cannot owna mobile after Feb. 6, 2018? R. Lalitha,Veerasamy Street, West Mambalam

Sir, As the monsoon is approaching, it is imperative that all the storm water drains are cleanedand de-silted. In the floods two years back, many parts of the neighbourhood including MotilalStreet, T. Nagar got inundated. Even during moderate rains, water stagnates in the street as thestorm water drains are clogged and are not able to carry the rain water. It also adversely affectslow lying residences as water enters the houses on the ground floor. I hope Chennai Corporationtakes immediate steps to de-silt storm water drains and water bodies in the city. V. S. Narayanaswamy,T. Nagar
