Welcome to the first edition of the Rwanda Tourism

Guide.

The publication of this comprehensive and detailed

guide represents a major step forward for Rwanda’s still

fledgling tourism sector.

As a destination, we still have to make up ground on

some of our more developed neighbours; but I believe

that we have an excellent and, in many ways, truly

unique tourism product of which we can all be proud.

Led by the efforts of the Rwanda Development Board

(RDB), local and foreign investment in new hotels and

lodges has been a hallmark of the past few years and we

now have a range of quality properties in a wide variety

of locations to suite all needs and tastes.

Foreword

3RWANDA TOURISM GUIDE

For those who come to our beautiful country, we aim

to increase the length of each stay and to encourage

visitors to see more of Rwanda than perhaps has

been the case hitherto. We are working hard to ensure

that tourist facilities throughout Rwanda match the

expectations of visitors; but I am sure there is still more

to do in this regard.

We offer a warm Rwandan welcome to the land of a

thousand hills.

INTRODUCTION

A thousand hills, a million smiles

Rwanda is a small landlocked nation of just

10.5 million people squeezed into an area of

26,338 sq km, making it mainland Africa’s most densely

populated state.

It is also a nation with a deeply troubled recent history;

yet Rwanda has made a remarkable recovery since the

dark days of 1994. This speedy recovery should serve

as an example to others around the world who have

experienced internal conflict and as a blueprint of how

to build a dynamic and prosperous nation in the most

inauspicious of circumstances.

Beacon of lightNot only has Rwanda become a shining beacon of light

and hope; it has also shown the way in terms of creating

a civil society and maintaining strong and credible

institutions that are the envy of many throughout the

continent of Africa.

As well as getting to grips with many aspects of

economic development, Rwanda has recognised

the importance of its tourism industry as a means of

attracting foreign investment and generating foreign

exchange. Rwanda is at least fortunate in being one

of only three locations where tourists can see the

endangered mountain gorilla.

In many ways Rwanda, at least for the time being, is

regarded as a destination for those with a deep interest

in Africa. In fact, it is very much a destination for the

cognoscenti – those who have visited Africa before and

have a passion that goes beyond tropical beaches and

spotting the ‘Big Five’.

Yet, Rwanda is perceived as somewhere to visit as part

of a wider trip around East Africa and beyond. This is

clear from the fact that the average visitor spends only

2.8 days in Rwanda.

Improved accessClearly it is the ambition of all of those involved in the local

tourism industry to boost this comparatively low figure by

improving access to, and building accommodation near,

particular local attractions. There is certainly no shortage

of things to see and do; and Rwanda is making efforts to

educate and inform the market about what is actually on

offer beyond the viewing of its trademark gorillas.

For a start, Rwanda has three highly distinctive national

parks covering a total of 3,600 sq km. Two offer an

opportunity to view a range of primates in dense, high

altitude rain forest while the third, perhaps surprisingly,

provides a classic East African safari experience with

plains game in open savannah.

7

Page 13: Rwanda Tourism Guide 2010/11

INTRODUCTION

Perhaps contrary to popular belief, Rwanda has just

one small National Park that is inhabited by mountain

gorillas. The 130 sq km Parc National des Volcans is well

served by top-quality lodges and visitors with special

permits have reasonably easy access to the forest and

its prized primates.

RainforestNyungwe Forest National Park provides similar dense

rainforest but offers a different and highly varied range of

primates and other jungle-dwelling mammals. Akagera is

the least known National Park but has the greatest long-

term potential as it competes with some of East Africa’s

best-known reserves as a location to view Africa’s most

photogenic game.

As a complete alternative to the delights of rainforest

trekking or big game spotting, Rwanda also contains one

of Central Africa’s best-kept secrets: Lake Kivu. Once

popular with colonials in far-off days, Lake Kivu is slowly

returning to its former glory, with several upmarket hotels

now gracing its delightful shores.

The Rwandan capital, Kigali, should not be

overlooked. Kigali must be Africa’s cleanest and

safest city. In fact, Kigali is spotless and extremely

well organised. From the uniformed and orderly taxi

drivers that greet visitors at the airport to the smartly

dressed and regulated boda boda operators who are

available throughout the city, Kigali’s transport system

is efficient and a pleasure to use. The city’s genocide

museum is a must-see visitor site and a deeply

moving experience.

High standardEducated Rwandans, especially those in Kigali, speak

English to a high standard and the government has

been encouraging the use of English as a medium for

tuition in all schools. However, visitors may still find

some people – such as taxi drivers and older Rwandans

– whose knowledge of the language is limited. English,

alongside French and Kinyarwanda, has been made

an official language. A further step towards a more

anglophone outlook was taken when Rwanda joined the

Commonwealth in November 2009.

PARC NATIONAL DES VOLCANS

A magical world of gorillas and mountain peaksAs its name suggests, the 130 sq km Parc National

des Volcans, in the far north-west of Rwanda, is

an area of magnificent volcanic peaks. The park is also,

famously, home to the endangered mountain gorilla and

about half of the world’s population of this primate live

within its boundaries.

The park is a mosaic of montane ecosystems containing

both evergreen and bamboo forest as well as open

grassland, swamp and heath. Within its borders there

are five volcanoes, of which the highest is Karisimbi at

4,507 metres.

PermitsDay permits are available to visit the eight habituated

families of gorillas living in the park. Only 56 permits are

available each day and cost US$500 per person.

The park borders Virunga National Park, in the

Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mgahinga National

Park, in Uganda, and mountain gorillas often roam

between all three parks. In order to see the gorillas,

visitors make an exhilarating trek through the cultivated

foothills of the Virungas before entering the national park

with its thick rainforest. The forest canopy is alive with

colourful birds while the peaks of volcanoes make an

impressive backdrop. There is a chance to spot the rare

golden monkey and this can make an interesting second-

day trip. Surprisingly, the forest is also home to small

populations of hard-to-spot buffalo and elephant as well as

black-fronted duiker, spotted hyena and bushbuck.

HabitatFor those keenly interested in gorillas and the campaign

to protect their habitat, another day hiking trip is to

Karisoke to see the grave of conservationist Dian Fossey,

who died in 1985.

The area contains 178 recorded bird species. At least 13

species and 16 subspecies are endemic to the Virungas

and the Rwenzoris.

Day tripMany tourists make their base in nearby Ruhengeri, with

its selection of hotels, lodges and guesthouses, but the

park is just two hours from Kigali on paved roads. This

enables visitors to make a day trip to the park, albeit

a long and tiring one. At Musanze, a natural bridge

composed of solidified lava is a reminder of the volcanic

activity that gave the area its name.

Close to Ruhengeri are the lakes of Burera, Ruhondo and

Karago.

AkAGERA NATIONAL PARk

Set at a relatively low altitude in north-east Rwanda

and bordering Tanzania, the 2,500 sq km Akagera

National Park has a terrain very different from the densely

cultivated hills that characterise much of Rwanda.

Akagera is the largest of Rwanda’s National Parks and

comprises three distinct ecosystems: the lakes (Shakani

and Ihéma) and swamps along the course of the Akagera

River; classic African savannah with trademark acacia

trees and open-plains big game in the style of better-

known parks in Kenya and Tanzania; and some mountain

landscapes.

In former times, Akagera was one of the great East African

national parks; but war and the consequent poaching of

game meat have taken their toll. Nevertheless, the park

is well managed now and animal numbers are slowly

recovering. There are also plans to restock the park, so

Akagera is set to regain its greatness and now would be

a good time to visit. In addition to small herds of elephant

and buffalo, Akagera is home to leopard, spotted hyena

and the occasional lion. The park also contains giraffe

and zebra and more than a dozen species of antelope,

including the world’s largest, the Cape eland, as well as

impala, bushbuck, oribi and topi.

Given the swampy nature of much of the terrain, it is

no surprise to find large pods of hippo as well as giant

crocodile inhabiting the area.

Akagera also lays claim to more than 500 species of

birds including two endangered species of waterbirds:

the papyrus gonolek and the unmistakable and much-

photographed shoebill stork.

The only accommodation close to the park is provided

by the 60-room Akagera Game Lodge, which has been

rebuilt recently.

Lesser-known park offers a wealth of wildlife

13

Page 18: Rwanda Tourism Guide 2010/11

14 NyUNGWE NATIONAL PARk

Reaching the heights of natural wonder and diversity The high-altitude Nyungwe Forest National Park

in south-east Rwanda is the largest expanse of

montane forest in East or Central Africa.

With altitudes ranging from 1,600 metres to 2,950

metres, the park covers 970 sq km and is one of the

richest areas in Africa in terms of endemic species.

FloraNyungwe Forest is best known for its rich diversity of

flora – with over 200 types of tree, and a canopy that is

50 to 60 metres high in places – and for its 13 varieties of

primate. The park receives up to 2,000 mm of rain each

year and is one of Africa’s oldest forests.

Flowering plants include the giant lobelia and many

colourful orchids.

PrimatesThere are thought to be 86 species of mammal in the

park. Primates include the owl-faced, mona, blue,

golden, red-tailed and vervet monkeys; as well as grey-

cheeked mangabey, black-and-white colobus (of which

there are troops up to 400 strong), eastern needle-

clawed galago, greater bushbaby, dwarf galago, olive

baboon and chimpanzee, of which there are estimated to

be over 1,000 living in the forest.

Nyungwe is also considered the best birding destination

in Rwanda. It has almost 300 bird species, of which at

least 25 are unique to the montane forest environment

of the Albertine Rift. In particular, birdwatchers come to

see the multicoloured great blue turaco. The park is also

renowned for its butterflies.

TrailsVisitors benefit from an extensive network of some 50 km

of well-maintained walking trails that lead through the forest

to various waterfalls and viewing points. The park can also be

visited as part of a day trip from the nearby towns of Butare

and Cyangugu, but this short stay is really not enough to

view all that Nyungwe has to offer.

Accommodation comprises the smart new Nyungwe

Forest Lodge or the rather basic Kisagura guest house,

about 1 km from the forest and run by the Kisagura Tea

Estate.

16 LAkE kIVU

Page 21: Rwanda Tourism Guide 2010/11

Lake Kivu, shared by Rwanda and the Democratic

Republic of Congo, is one of Africa’s truly great

lakes, covering an area of some 2,700 sq km.

Situated 1,460 metres above sea level, Kivu is the

world’s 15th deepest lake with a depth of 480 metres.

Furthermore, the world’s 10th-largest inland island, Idjwi,

is located in Lake Kivu.

There are three resort towns on the Rwandan side of the

lake: Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu. All three are ideal

places for swimming, while from Gisenyi visitors can take

a boat trip to the islands or even across into Goma to

visit Gishamwana Island with its coffee plantation.

ExcursionsGisenyi is the main centre for excursions into the Parc

des Volcans. Situated on the north side of Lake Kivu,

it also provides many opportunities for water sports

and for boat trips on the lake. Kibuye, further south, is

another lakeside resort.

17

Great lake that is also agreat visitor destination

Page 23: Rwanda Tourism Guide 2010/11

Pretty Kibuye is an idyllic lakeside town and home to

a wide variety of exotic birds and colourful plants. The

former colonial resort looks out over a majestic scene

of striking volcanic islands with small fishing vessels

bobbing in the foreground.

Boat trips can be arranged from Kibuye to Napoleon,

famous for its fruit bats, and to the Amahoro Islands.

Border townAt Cyangugu, a border town close to the Democratic

Republic of Congo and on the southern shores

of the lake, visitors can go and see the spectacular

grottoes of Kaboza and Nyenji and the thermal waters

at Nyakabuye.

The nearby Rugege Forest is home to many rare and exotic

species of wildlife. The birdlife around the lake is particularly

fascinating and visitors can expect to see pelicans, grey

crowned cranes and the small malachite kingfisher.

All the lakeside towns are linked by a twisting switch-

back of a road that goes through plantain fields and

misty rainforest and provides fabulous views over the

lake below. These three main towns are also connected

by a regular charter boat service that served the

Rwandan side of the lake.

HotelsThe popularity of the lake is evident from the growing

number of classy hotels and comfortable guesthouses

that have been opened in recent years. Some of these

hotels are top-end, five-star properties offering the most

luxurious accommodation to visitors to the lake and

are in-keeping with Rwanda’s reputation as a top-end

destination.

Many of the better quality hotels have their own boat

for trips on and around the lake. Otherwise, it’s reason-

ably easy to find a boat operating from the three main

lakeside towns.

The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) is evidence

that Rwanda is open for business. Created in order

to promote local private sector led development, RDB

has been modelled on similar economic development

agencies in other emerging nations.

The Board was created from a merger of eight key

government agencies, including business registra-

tion, investment promotion, environmental clearances,

privatisation and other specialist agencies – all of which

continue to report directly to the President.

Due to the collective knowledge of its members, RDB is able

to offer a range of services to support and advise investors

and to those looking to set up new businesses in Rwanda.

The organisation’s main areas of expertise are tourism,

investment promotion, investment facilitation and export

promotion.

ExcellenceThe RDB Annual Awards are a recognition of excellence

which encourages enterprises and individuals to go

beyond expectations. Not only by being profitable but

also by contributing to society, innovating and growing

their industries. Categories include: ‘Investor of the Year’,

‘Exporter of the Year’ and ‘Woman Entrepreneur of the

Year’.

Primate Safaris understands that for most people,

viewing mountain gorillas is a once in a lifetime

opportunity. That is why the company aims to make the

experience as magical and personal as possible.

The company specialises in catering for travellers bored

with mass tourism, seeking an exclusive, highly enlight-

ening and enjoyable eco-tourism experience.

Adventure With specialist guides, including five professional

driver-guides, two gorilla trackers and a sizeable fleet of

specially converted 4x4 safari vehicles, guests can enjoy

the adventure knowing they are in good hands.

Home to the world’s last surviving mountain gorilla popu-

lation; Parc National de Volcans is home to around 700

individuals.

This popular tour starts with an exhilarating trek through

the cultivated foothills of the Virungas, eventually

entering the rainforest alive with colourful birds and

the rare golden monkey. Viewing time of the gorillas is

limited to one hour, and only eight visitors are allowed

per group.

One of the Africa’s best-kept secrets, the Nyungwe

National Park has well-marked and maintained trails and

boasts 13 rare primate species. The tour focuses on

viewing and tracking colobus monkeys and chimpan-

zees. The chimps are best viewed in the early morning,

therefore the trip begins at 0400 hours with a 2-hour trek

through the jungle.

PerfectFor a more classic safari experience, Akagera National

Park is the perfect destination to view game and birdlife.

The tour includes camping alongside the Park’s pictur-

esque lakes.

Lake Kivu, meanwhile, is an extraordinarily beautiful

inland sea and is ideal for relaxing. Primate Safaris

organises a magical boat trip on the lake, including a

visit to the popular hotel resort of Gisenyi.
