Dear patron,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to our 49th season. As we are preparing for the big celebration next year, it feels like the party has started already! Just look at our soloist roster this year: we are kicking off the season with one of the brightest violin stars on the scene today. A concert featuring Jennifer Frautschi in Tchaikovsky’s brilliant Violin Concerto is a must-see event in any cultural capital of the world. Next up, Russian powerhouse pianist Alexander Ghindin will dazzle us with Liszt’s Totentanz and Rachmaninoff ’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

For me, the Holiday season is all about traditions. The continuous tremendous response to our annual Messiah tells me that many of you feel the same. I would not want to offer you the same experience twice, so this year, in addition to the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah (plus the indispensable Hallelujah chorus!), we will also delight you with Magnificat by the popular British composer John Rutter.

In January, we greet the new year with the “New World” Symphony by Dvorák. The Israeli pianist Alon Goldstein, a musician of profound insight, will guide us through Bartok’s folk-inspired Piano Concerto No. 3. In February, I am happy to present to you the most recent world-class musician to make the Rogue Valley his home. Dan Kocurek, the former principal trumpet of Dallas Brass, will show his admirable versatility in two pieces of very different character.

The 2016–17 season will be a wonderful prelude to our 50th anniversary. For our triumphant season finale, we collaborate with the Southern Oregon Repertory Singers in Mozart’s immortal Reqiuem. Another popular gem, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, will feature the exceptionally talented pianist Jodi French. You can hear the proto-version of “Ode to Joy” in the Choral Fantasy; remember these sounds, as they will crystalize into their final form in our 50th year.

Education Programs

The Rogue Valley Symphony is proud to deliver first rate music education programs to the schools in Southern Oregon and Northern California. Music education is a key component of our mission, and our programs serve more than 10,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Help to deliver these programs by becoming an individual sponsor.

Link UpThe RVS gives free weekly music lessons to all the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in the Phoenix/Talent school district. Using a curriculum designed by Carnegie Hall, RVS musicians bring music back to schools where there has been no regular music teacher since the recession. Every student in the program performs learned repertoire in an exciting interactive concert with the full symphony at the end of the school year.

Chamber Players in the ClassroomA quintet of RVS musicians visit elementary schools to give 30 minute performances introducing young students to their instruments and classical music. This program serves more than 5,000 elementary school students each year.

Classical CoachesRVS musicians, at the invitation of local orchestra and band teachers, visit junior high and high school music classes to work one-on-one and in small sections with student musicians. This mentoring and coaching deepens and enriches the school curriculum.

Connecting with the ClassicsThe RVS offers more than 100 free tickets to children and students under 18 to each of its concerts in Grants Pass. Students are invited to take a tour backstage before the concert and to meet the musicians at post-concert receptions.
