RV Geeks Upgrade Their Electrical System

Peter and John, who originally hail from the East Coast are known more commonly as ‘The RVgeeks’. John explains the duo best when he describes themselves as “just a couple of guys trying to help other RVers tackle repair, maintainence, and upgrade projects on their own - an organic evolution of our own experiences RVing.” Approximately 13 years ago they sold everything and left their high paying, financially stable jobs for a life on the road. Never having spent even a single night in an RV before, they bought a 2002 39’ Fleetwood Bounder Diesel online and flew down to California to pick it up. They had a initial plan of living off their savings for a few years and eventually finding a nice place to settle down but after a few years on the road, they fell in love with being full time RVers and “it turned out that nowhere was the right place, and everywhere was perfect.”

To enable them to keep on themselves on the road full-time, they combined their skills and began creating websites for RV parks they would visit along their journey. As their skillsets grew, so did their business model, incorporating many DIY videos on their YouTube channel specifically for RVers. The videos initially started out with a tutorial meant to help a friend/fellow RVer and has since taken on a life of it’s own with almost 20 million views and no signs of slowing down. The RVgeeks certainly love what they do and are very passionate about their lifestyle, which can sometimes present somewhat of a blurred line between business and pleasure. They enjoy travelling, exploring new places, hiking,

canoeing, and meeting fellow RVers.

Installing the Xantrex Freedom SW

Having a great inverter/charger system in your RV is critical if you love being ‘off the grid’. Peter and John now have a 2005 Newmar Mountain Aire Class A motorhome. They bought it directly from Newmar and opted for Magnum MS2800 sine wave inverter/charger. A couple of years ago, the Magnum unit started having issues with power dropouts, especially when transferring from shorepower or generator to inverter and vice versa. The transition wasn’t always smooth and many sensitive electronics would turn-off and had to be restarted because of the power lag. The RVgeeks began to troubleshoot and after a few replaced parts and switches, they had resolved some issues, but not all.

In 2015, Newmar Corp switched to Freedom SW inverter/charger system for their entire luxury line of Class A motorhomes. The RVgeeks also upgraded to Freedom SW earlier this year and they are extremely happy with its performance. No more power dropouts, turned-off electronics or any sort of power lag! The Freedom SW offers more AC power, battery charging capacity, surge output and faster transfer time than the Magnum unit.

The new Telephone to Ethernet cable adapter (Xantrex #808-9010) made the installation extremely fast and easy. So easy that John said “If you’re even decently handy and have some basic tools around, you can replace your current system to the latest in pure sine wave technology with ease. John describes the process as “basically plug and play, it was just a matter of unhooking the old and inserting the new.” While make and model factor in, replacing your Magnum to a Xantrex is effortless.
